Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday April 20, 2014 Jill Promote yourself. Netiquette reminders: Want to recommend someone else’s writing instead? Try the weekly signal-boosting thread. we expect Content Notes as a courtesy to our readers for problematic content in linked posts and/or their comment threads (a habit of posting only triggering/disparaging links may annoy the Giraffe (you really don’t want to annoy the Giraffe)) extended discussion of self-promotion links on this thread is counter-productive for the intended signal-boosting – the idea is for the promoted sites to get more traffic. If it’s a side-discussion that would be off-topic/unwelcome/distressing on the other site, take it to #spillover after leaving a note on this thread redirecting others there.
Tennessee’s General Assembly has passed a really awful law criminalizing pregnancy outcomes. Even the NY Times editorial board agrees it’s “meanspirited and counterproductive.” What’s worse, it will hit black women hardest. People should sign the petition asking the Governor to veto this horrorshow, but, more importantly, health care providers should tell the Governor that they will not assist in the enforcement of this law. I’ve issued a call to action for midwives, who, throughout history have stood with women even when the law was against women. With Woman: A Call to Tennessee Midwives Thanks!

Who would you put on feminist trading cards? A set of feminist trading cards from the 70s featured at the Met got me thinking about who I would put on a modern-day version. Please come over and share your ideas in the comments. Gentrification is not inevitable. It often feels like we can’t stem the tide of gentrification, but a new report from grassroots organization Causa Justa :: Just Cause offers solutions.
My reporting for RHRC this week: Nevada Republicans Reject National Party’s Strict Anti-Choice Platform Arizona Governor Signs Bill Authorizing Warrantless Surprise Inspections of Abortion Clinics Alaska Law Limits Which Abortions Can Be Deemed ‘Medically Necessary’
Republicans deny waging war on women. Well, how about the list below, which includes cuts to life-saving programs that mostly affect women. No GOP War On Women? Wire women up to measure vaginal blood flow and, it turns out, they get aroused at the sight of pretty much anything having sex, according to widely cited research by Queen’s University psychology professor, Meredith Chivers. But 1) vaginal blood flow data doesn’t reflect sexual feelings and interest and 2) modern women’s sexuality is repressed by patriarchy. So while women’s sex drive may be — or have the potential to be — as strong or stronger than men’s, Chiver’s data doesn’t establish it. We must overcome patriarchy to free women’s sexuality. Are Women Sexually Ravenous?

On broadsspeak: The marriage prescription for single mothers is alive and kicking, but a recent Washington Post article heads in the right direction. Here’s my response: http://broadsspeak.wordpress.com/2014/04/14/on-the-marriage-prescription-for-single-mothers/

This week on Kiss My Wonder Woman: Push and The Losers are both franchises with diverse casts, fantastic female characters and epic stories. So why aren’t they more popular? Katy and the Big Snow is the rare children’s book that says that girls can be big strong trucks if they want to. Recaps of Game of Thrones 4×01 and 4×02, to see whether the trend of sexualized violence continues this season (hint: yes). Saga is all about why loving your enemy is a revolutionary act. Strong Female Character Friday with Sam Wilson from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, because he is totally Cap’s movie girlfriend and it is glorious. Next week tune in for recaps of Orphan Black and Game of Thrones, a look at Jesus Christ Superstar and its cheesy wonders, and The Thousand Dollar Tan Line.
