Math Quiz

On the ride home from school, Ethan quizzed me on my math skills.

E: What’s ninety-three times ten?

Me: 930.

E: Okay, what’s two hundred fifty-six times ten?

Me: 2,560.

E: Oh yeah? What’s nine hundred… eighty-five times ten?

Me: 9,850

E: Whoah. [thinks up a hard one] What’s eight-six-three-five times ten?

Me: 86, 350.

E: [eyes bulge] Wow, mom. You’re really good.

Me: Yeah. I am pretty good.

He doesn’t know I did so poorly in my math class this semester I’m retaking it this summer. Let’s not quell his awe.

I wish all math was that easy.

That started my day with a smile.

I wish math was that easy, too. It did help soothe my sore ego after bombing that math class. (“I haven’t forgotten everything. Maybe there’s hope.”)

I remember when I was teaching a Freshman English course and the students decided to quiz me on my knowledge of authors.

Student: “Oh Yeah, well who wrote Huckleberry Finn?”
Me: “That would be Mark Twain.”

Student: “Well, what about, um, The Scarlet Letter?” (triumphantly, thinks he’s got me now)
    Me: “Nathaniel Hawthorne.”

Student. (Thinking hard) “Well, who wrote The Sun Also Rises?”
Me: Gee, I think that was Hemingway.

Me: Dude. I can BE stumped. Just not by you.

It is fun impressing people with the easy questions. :) but I still hate math.
