Turducken? That’s foul!
If someone is stuffing a turkey with a duck and a chicken somewhere, it’s time for the Thanksgiving Random Ten. Fire up your mp3s, drink off the motherly guilt, and list the first ten your favorite mp3 player vurps out.
1) Belle and Sebastian – You Made Me Forget My Dreams
3/10, because the boyfriend forgot about BS years ago. Except for all the BS he slings me.
2) The Cramps – New Kind of Kick
8/10 “Life is short / Filled with stuff” is, perhaps, the meaning of life. Especially for a turkey.
3) The Pixies – The Sad Punk
5/10 Punks don’t get sad. That’s for the screamo kids.
4) Curtis Gordon – Draggin’
10/10, because it takes cojones to put every single instrument on reverb.
5) Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen in Love
7/10 This is a compromise score. Ah, partnership.
6) Link Wray – New Studio Blues
8/10, even though he falls out of beat, or off the stage. Whatever.
7) Michael Mayer – Love is Stronger Than Pride
4/10 Okay, this electroclash thing has gone totally overboard. When the boyfriend is tempted to grab a glowstick and do a hand jive, I’m over it.
8) Tangela Tricola – Jet Lady
4/10 for making us laugh out loud for the duration of the song. Can we not-so-randomly put some Shooby Taylor on up in here?
9) Tom Waits – Down, Down, Down
10/10 Thankgiving bonus for Mr. Waits. He has a gravel sack like a turkey.
10) Devo – Mongoloid
9/10 This one caused us to tiff about using our indoor voices, so it has to be good.
Alas, this list is only 68% cool. Please do not let that reflect on our records.
BONUS TRACK: David Cross’ “Diarrhea Moustache,” in which he riffs about people who refer to themselves in the third person.
Ryan and Lauren bid you a happy holiday.

“Mongoloid” shouldn’t cause tiffs. Spontaneous copulation, possibly, but tiffs?
It wasn’t a real tiff, but we both started screaming so loudly about the awesomeness of Devo that it caused, well, a discussion. Which soon ended in a pinching contest.
I should also say it is me who most often starts yelling first, but that’s only because I’m poor at containing excitement.
Containing excitement over Devo is not only wrong, but nigh on impossible.
1. Sisters of Mercy – No Time To Cry.
8/10 Gothtastic.
2. Bruce McCullogh – When You’re Fat
7/10 Bouncy, fun, and depressing.
3. The Monks – Bad Habits
6/10 Goofy brit-wave. Equal parts rock and novelty.
4. Andre 3000 – Happy Valentine’s Day
9/10 Seasonal, but wrong season. Fucking excellent neo-soul ass-kickery.
5. Tenacius D – Rocket Sauce
4/10 Audio clip from their show on HBO. Left over from my Tenacious D phase in 1st year. (I still love ‘em.) A source of bonding with my metalhead former roommate.
6. Fugees – The Mask
6/10 The Fugees rock, but there are much better on the album.
7. The Pixies – Ed is Dead
7/10 I haven’t heard this song for years (well, like 1 or 2). Early Pixies have been off my radar for so long that I’m not sure how to process it. (Other than that it rocks.)
8. Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
6/10 The song itself is sort of nifty, in a rock-musician-playing-solo-piano kinda way, but it gets phat points for memories.
9. Black Sabbath – Planet Caravan
6/10 Great song, but I want my Sabbath to ROCK.
10. Hugh LeCaine – Sounds to Forget.
3/10 iTunes fucking loves this CD for some reason. It’s a demonstration of old electroacoustic technology and composition. As such, it’s interesting, but it’s not especially, y’know. Rockin’.
62%. Hm. I’ll take it.
Cojones, honey. That’s cojones.
Unconfirmed Devo-iana: New Scientist magazine proclaimed the release of Devo’s album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! as the most significant cultural event of 1978.
I once owned an energy dome. Yes, I was a Devo nerd.
With that, here’s my Thanksgiving Random Ten – The “Steak Not Turkey” Edition. No coolness quotients, though:
1. Traffic – Light Me Up Or Leave Me Alone
2. The Beatles – A Day In The Life
3. The Donnas – Too Bad About Your Girl
4. Sir Mix-A-Lot – I Checks My Bank
5. Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth (With Money In My Hand)
6. David Bowie – Let’s Dance
7. Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours
8. 3rd Bass – The Gas Face (“..but P.W. Botha gets the gas face!”)
9. The Cure – Just Like Heaven
10. Prince and The Revolution – Let’s Go Crazy
T-giving Bonus Guilty Pleasure Track: Color Me Badd – I Wanna Sex You Up
ok, get a hummingbird, stuff that inside a pidgeon, stuff that inside a chicken, stuff that inside a duck, stuff that inside a turkey, stuff that inside an eagle, stuff that inside an ostrich, stuff that inside a pteradactl, stuff that inside a dragon, and then stuff that inside a 747.
so what meat to you want, first class or coach?
I still think that turducken looks like a dissected (well, bisected) brain. Delicious?
Nicole wishes you and Ryan a Happy Turkey Day!
1. Star Guitar – Chemical Brothers
6/10 A perfect trancy/electro-dance track to get up up and out on an early morning. The beat kicks in when the coffee does.
2. Perfect Day ’97- Various Artists
5/10 lacking in all street cred as this is a cover of a Lou Reed classic. Although it did ROCK MY WORLD in ’97.
3.Cabron – Red Hot Chili Peppers
8/10 I think my party mix is set to include a Chilies at every turn.. godbless’em.
4.No Way – Pearl Jam
7/10 – No teenage years are complete without some of this delicious darkness.
5.Come Into My World – Kylie Minogue
6/10 On a different tack… lifts me up with pop perfection.
6.Yesterday Threw Everything At Me Athlete
9/10 The way coldplay used to be when they were new and good. Beautiful, touching, and just what you need when a day really did hit the fan.
7.Love Your Way – Powderfinger
6/10 Love that this album randomised itself – a friend who went to Oz brought this back. She also taught me the joy of surfing and therefore changed my life.
8.The Slide Song – The Afghan Whigs
5/10 Not their best track but everyone should OWN the album ENGLAND MADE ME – it will now and forever rock my world.
9.Girl – Tori Amos
10/10 She’s in form here and this is a live version. Tori taught me all I never wanted to know about being a girl. It’s all true.
10.Satisfy My Soul – Bob Marley
6/10Any good mix should do as the title of this song suggests.
BONUS Last Beautiful Girl – Matchbox Twenty
6/10 cheesy love.
It’s possible that at this time of night too many things ROCK MY WORLD… must grow up and stop using this phrase quite as often…
Pretty sure turduckens come pre-stuffed. :) I admit I’d actually like to try one some day…
Medledy: The South Wind/The Blackbird – Duck Baker
Moon Ray – Ella Fitzgerald
Secrets and Lies – Jonatha Brooke
Big Tall Man – Liz Phair
Mr. E. Leon Rauis – Rasputina
My Sweet – Django Reinhardt
Hold Tight (Want Some Seafood Mama) – The Andrews Sisters
Non, Je Ne Regrette Rein – Edith Piaf
Diaspora [Ballon Theatre Remix] – Natcha Atlas
Red Hand Case – Modest Mouse
Just an Hour – Gabriela Anders
Eh. I’ve had better music mixes.
That shit looks like head cheese.
Friday Random Ten – 11.25.05
Time for Friday Random Ten, where you hit shuffle on your favorite digital music player (for me my Windows MediaPlayer at work) and report on the first ten songs that it spits out. Okay, that MediaPlayer of mine actually spit

Aaaand thaaat’s the Ricky Henderson bit. YEAH!
for the record, michael mayer is not and was not ever electroclash.
KnifeGhost, I thought the same thing. In fact, I didn’t just think it, it was my initial reaction*, and I took a moment to reach the second sentence (because I was thinking “yeah, that is indeed quite foul, but I’ve never heard the word turducken before”). Interestingly enough, once I figured out what it was, the visceral, strong, churning reaction and appallment … didn’t really change (-:
I guess I never was much of a duck fan.
(sigh), you don’t stuff meat with meat people. Doesn’t work that way** Though kudos to the people selling this stuff, anyone silly enough to buy this is just asking to be taken advantage of, or something.
*A brain! I can’t believe Lauren would do that above the fold. Not human… died of illness… tumescent skull distention post-mortem… hemoperm-no, burnt-no, roasted… wound has been delicately seasoned…wait, what the-
**On second thought, I type corrected, there is actually a more naturally occuring version of this. It’s called tumor.
