I like how she throws in oxytocin to sound real scientific and credible and stuff. In reality, it takes three or more hormones present at high levels in pregnancy and birth to create long-term attachment, but often that isn’t enough to maintain attachment even for those of us who mate in the patented Right Way or otherwise. See Natalie Angier.
And nice kick in the pants for the public schools, Morse. I like those unexpected jabs against shit like science, public schools, and WTF, Islam.
No, really. What the fuck?
We also apparently release oxytocin to bond to our partners, as this article and several other sources I’ve read proclaim. I believe it’s supposed to be released upon orgasm, reducing the woman to a pathetic, whimpering, love junkie. But funny how it never seems to happen with a vibrator….
As for the rest of the article, holy crap! No wonder the wingnuts are clamoring for torture and illegal wiretapping. Fuck, we’re in a War Against Islam now. Who knew?
So, if it’s oxytocin that binds the woman to the man – what is it, exactly, that binds the man to the woman (no! Not THAT sort of binding, you sick people!)?
Steyn’s original article is here:

This stuff scares the shit out of me. On the one hand I think it’s morally repugnant that women should be expected to have children as a service to society. On the other he’s got a point that muslim population in Europe do have a rather unreconstructed view of women. Unless lots of them lose their religion, in 40 years time quite a large proportion of the population is going to be voting for some quite unpleasant stuff.
And with the fundies already out-breeding you over here, it doesn’t look good, kids.
/remove tongue from cheek
I’ll get right on that, B Moe.
So screw spreading our genes, it’s time to spread our memes. (Memes in the Dawkins sense, not the internet sense.) Secular humanism and feminism make for better, longer, more enjoyable lives–for men as well as women. The Islamic population of Europe will blend in and develop a feminist viewpoint if given the chance. If treated as “the enemy” they will cling to their old ways because it will be clear that nothing they do will get them acceptance by the mainstream culture so they might as well keep what they have rather than risk it for a change they won’t be allowed to make anyway.
My issue with Morse is that she tends to take her own regrets (waiting longer than she thinks she should have to have kids) and project them on the rest of us. Why does she assume that everyone whose child isn’t born immediately after marriage is going to wait until they’re 38 like she did, or that they are necessarily a “career woman waiting for tenure?”
The standard waiting period after the wedding, from what I’ve seen, is about 2-5 years regardless of the couple’s age. It gives a coupel time to save money and just “be married” without the responsibilities of children, for a few years.
By the time we have a kid, we will have been married probably 3 years if everything goes according to plan. That would make me 28-29, not at the dreaded “clock ticking” age that Morse is always referring to. And I don’t have a “career” other than my contract job and my writing (when I feel like it), so I will absolutely be a full-time mom if we can afford it.
I’m sorry Jennifer that I didn’t get a $50k job with benefits right out of school, so we had to put off the kids thing for a bit. I’m also sorry that houses in NJ cost $500k plus. But please don’t assume that I don’t value my marriage or the kids I do have because of that reason.
And even among the couples that don’t wait and have a kid within a year of marriage, most of them still won’t have the “Muslim outbreeding” 4-5 children. Most will have 1-3 kids. That’s what’s affordable today, and what’s practical especially in cities.
There are a lot of people who postpone childbearing to realize a career, but that doesn’t describe a whole lot of us conservatives who are every bit as pro-life as Morse is, and would have loved to have kids younger, if we could have afforded to feed and house them. Visit Morse’s columns or even FreeRepublic at times, and you’ll think that having less than 3 kids makes you anti-child and a communist.
the kids I do have Would be clearer if I’d said “any kids I end up having,” since I don’t have them yet.
Of course it does! It’s what make the unshaved feminists bond with their dildos, never to look at men again. Vibrators are addictive, they destroy thousands of families every year, they are worse than cocain! Outlaw mr Rabit!!!!11!!!1!
Jokes aside, I’m dead tired of this bigot hysteria; You better do away with human rights/womens’ rights/openness etc and resubjugate your women or else The Unwashed Hordes of Brown Men will outbreed you and turn your country into a califate and and and… Basically they think you should choose a christian dark age over a muslim one. Lovely choice.
The Unwashed Hordes of Brown Men
You know Magnus, come to think of it, you’re right…Morse probably wouldn’t want my kids anyway. They’ll be half Indian and have an Islamic-sounding last name. Shame on me for tainting my blonde, Christian blood with Muslim-looking features. :-)
And a big part of the problem of Muslims in Europe is that many European countries haven’t accepted them, and they wind up as ghettoized, second-class citizens.
But, really, I do love the smell of natalism in the morning.
While I’d welcome any muslim converts to feminism, I’m a bit sceptical about the logic the claims they only hold their views because they’ve been excluded from society. The Christian Right aren’t excluded from the US, but this hasn’t stopped them clinging to various outmoded views.
Oh man, that last paragraph was a hoot!
I literally laughed out loud over her fear of Islam. Now I think my boss knows for sure that I am surfing the net.
what is it, exactly, that binds the man to the woman
Jugs.
It’s things like this that make me feel kinda guilty for wanting to have children.
But then, I’m already 23 and I haven’t started yet! I probably won’t for several more years! Never mind that my fiance’s still in school and we’re both busy and finances are tight, I’m falling behind!
Robert, if you’ve ever wondered why some feminists call you a misogynist troll, wonder no more.
What zuzu said. And racism aside, making citizenship and religious devotion mutually exclusive is not a way to encourage citizenship.
nik: Certainly, ALL muslims wouldn’t want to join in the effete, corrupt western ways, any more than every Christian or ex-Christian wants to do the same. But my suspicion is that a lot of them would, given half a chance. Heck, based on my admittedly limited experience, a lot of them do given no more than 1/100th of a chance.
The only way the call to reproduce makes sense is if you believe that Islamic or Middle Eastern people are incapable of becoming westernized feministic democrats. And if that’s so what are we doing wasting time trying to “spread democracy” to the region? If they are, then we need to encourage them to integrate more into the society we hope they will join.
Robert, if you’ve ever wondered why some feminists call you a misogynist troll, wonder no more.
Saying that breasts bond men to women is misogynistic? Who knew.
Besides, only the hairy lesbian feminists think that. The pretty ones all love me. I know this because they leave obsessive messages in my voicemail inbox.
OK, those messages are really from me, calling myself and pretending. But if the pretty ones knew my phone number, they’d be leaving obsessive messages.
Robert, please let that last statement be sarcasm.
Reading the comments is scary. Seriously, socialism made it too difficult to have children? Anti-immigration?
Seriously, if you want there to be more children, make it reasonable to do so. If your so worried about the low-birth rates, increase incentive to motherhood, that’s what the “free-market’s” all about, right?
And there’s a freeper blaming promiscuity and teen pregnancy on the Pill. *sigh*
