To illustrate, it made me really happy that I could walk down stairs today and only one or two muscle groups were screaming in pain — it was a really big step forward from the previous three days, where any movement at all was searing.

Hah. This happened to me the first time I tried the 8-minute abs video with my residents a number of years ago. I quickly learned the lesson that if you're gonna work out muscles that haven't seen action in a long time, it's best to start out slowly...

I love Tyne Daly. I think it was her long, gray hair. Someday, in about thirty years, you will see me sporting that style.

Hi, I'm Anais. Have been reading Feministe for a few months now and really enjoy it.

This shall be the lamest delurking comment ever, but I completely hear you on the cheap grad student/ Bohemian foodie way of eating. As a fellow graduate student, I survive on baguettes, cheese, arugala drizzled with olive oil and basil, red wine, Sicilian olives, fresh mozarella and copious amounts of dark chocolate. Not supremely bad for you in and of themselves, but surely it can't be healthy to eat the same damn ten things week after week..... alas.

Will try to post a more substantial comment sometime soon!

At Baltazaar, we spotted the woman who plays Maxine Gray on Judging Amy

Tyne Daly?

Is that show still on? I watched it a few times when it was first on, mostly for the novelty factor, since it was set in Hartford, and Amy Breneman went to my high school, in Glastonbury (as did Candace Bushnell). The novelty of seeing Dan Futterman stabbed in the parking lot of Cheese 'n' Stuff wasn't really enough to keep me watching, unfortunately.

Ooh, Tabla. My boss is the neighbor of the guy who owns Tabla and various other restaurants in the Union Square family, so we have very good holiday parties. Last year was Tabla. Mmmm.

Where are you doing your triathalon training? I'm doing very-beginner running training through Jackrabbit, which just opened a shop in Manhattan (I'm doing classes in Brooklyn). It's been a while since I did any half-serious running, after an injury and surgery. I'd so love to do the Hood To Coast again, which I did 10 years ago, when I started running.

Jill, WOW! A fellow triathlete! I started tris 3 years ago and I'm hooked! And don't listen to those who say it can't be done, because it can. I train my ass off and I graduated with a 4.0. I just got accepted into Duke for a PhD program and I do not plan to stop anytime soon.
Although you will have to put the hours in, you will feel so much better. You will have energy and, depending on your schedule, you can increase or decrease your training at your leaisure. Be sure to sing up for an event to stay motivated and if you need a good foundation, check out Eric Harr's book (a real helper during my first sprint) "Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1579547486/sr=1-1/qid=1139189782/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7298554-2002246?%5Fencoding=UTF8
Besides being highly motivating, Harr's book shows you that being a triathlete does not require 30 hours of training a week (only the elites and absolute amateur freaks do that).
I am so excited for you. Good luck!!!

I don't understand how anyone can go to school and train for a triathalon. Maybe you should tone it down. Perhaps a marathon would work better.

Good luck, Jill.

Oiy! That would have freaked me out a bit -- to learn that someone I knew'd been reading and they didn't say who they were!

But, good luck with the triathalon!
