Friday Random Ten – The “I’m Back” Edition

in Blogging

I go away for two weeks and there’s a major flame war; we get picked up by the New York Times; and finally the blog explodes. I thought I told you all to be good?

Kidding, kidding. The vacation was excellent, and much-needed. I’m finishing up a brief due at 5pm today, and then blogging will resume as usual. A mighty big thanks to Lauren for coming back to Feministe for these two weeks. I’ve been an avid reader, and having her around made me delay my return just so I could keep reading what she was writing. I wish she would stay, but apparently she has a “real life” to attend to or something.

So, I am quite happy to be back, and have a series of posts already in the pipeline, just waiting for me to push that “publish” button. And now, the Friday Random Ten.

1. Roots – Still Out There
2. Radiohead – My Iron Lung
3. Portishead – Sour Times
4. Curtis Mayfield – the Other side of town
5. Tom Waits – I Want You (Side note: I’m not sure what it is about songs called “I Want You,” but they always seem to be some of my favorites from their respective artists. Examples A, B, and C: Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello.)
6. Mos Def – Love (Includes one of my favorite quotes ever — “They say the goodness in love belongs to those who believe. So I believe.”)
7. The Bad Plus – Frog and Toad
8. Salt n Peppa – What A Man
9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Rich
10. Nick Winterland – Stoned Misery

Welcome back Jill!

Welcome back. We could all use more Salt N’ Peppa, but Portishead… I like the folkier stuff she’s doing now far more than the nineties hip-kid makeout music she did then.

Great list, I love that Mos Def song.

Welcome back. You were missed. (Not a dig at those who held the fort in your absence!)

You’ve already heard me praise your love of Tom Waits, but I also share your love of the “I Want You” that Elvis Costello does.
A good song for your unrequited crush moments, of which I had quite a few around the time that song was first out.

Welcome back! I’m glad to hear the vacation was excellent. Even if Lauren can’t come back full time, it’s great to read her as a guest-hostess, or whatever that would be called. We’re fortunate to have so many great bloggers…

Since you’re a law student, maybe I should ask you…why are they called “briefs”? (The legal documents, not the underwear) It seems to me that most of them are anything but brief. (I’m half kidding here…although as a student of linguistic trivia, it does inspire my curiosity.)
