what the! Lauren, Jill, please delete that trackback ... I have no idea how that got there.

as to the Frey thing ... I'm fascinated by this whole "betrayal" drama. Why don't people feel betrayed by the falseness of reality TV but with a book like this is different? It's because people who think of themselves as smart and cool are outraged not by the lie but by the fact they got snookered? I think Frey is not the issue. Snobbery is.

Sometime yesterday or the day before I wrote a post called Cry me a river, a megarant that overtook me like a volcanic eruption and ended up after I read black Blackademic : I am this close, in particular, this bit :
we are being linked and and that is g

It is, but it isn't enough to just admit that you were wrong; one of the twelve steps is to make amends to those you've hurt.

Isn't AA built around faith? I'm not an alum myself, but I hear that it works pretty well for a lot of people.

Confession doesn't do much if you're not willing to do the penance. Frey's still in the booth, enjoying shocking the priest.

Ms. King may not necessarily be talking about faith in a deity or a religion. She may be just be using faith as a very general term: faith in other people, faith in yourself.

I'm all for honesty and integrity, but faith? That doesn't really seem like a way to "beat" addiction, it's just more false hope.

I agree with you and Heather King.

But too many readers would rather wallow in the "romantic" bragging of alcohlic sins then read about the realities of recovery. Frey sounds like he is in the long tradition of male "hardboiled" fantasy.
