I have a not-so-secret love for all things Mariah Carey. And so I cannot tell you how excited I was when I happened to be at the gym, watching tv and running on the treadmill, when her new video premiered on MTV. And it is SO Mariah.
Ridiculous bikini shots. All headshots only show one side of her face. Great pains taken to position herself just so. It’s like Honey all over again, only with less Puff Daddy and more Pharell. Because she’s hip.
Word is that she’s been hanging out with Naomi Campbell. Which is good, because I do like to see crazy compound itself.
I’ll be honest, though, it’s no Always Be My Baby, which is inarguably the greatest Mariah video of all time, and definitely one of her all-time best songs. The tire swing. Camp Mariah. The adorable little kids who kiss underwater. They just don’t make videos like that anymore.

Why does she position her face like that? Is there something the matter with the left side of Mariah?
Oh please. You hear “My All” and you cry, too.
It’s her better side, I suppose.
Coincidentally (or not), my left side is better than my right. Even more proof that we complete each other.
Mariah Carey has always made something in me clench. And not my teeth. And not in a good way.

I think we’ve found the root of your problem. The question is not “Why did Mariah’s latest video disappoint me so much?” but rather “Why did I expect anything but disappointment?”
Okay, no question, that new video is good. But as you say, it’s no “Always Be My Baby.” And what is with that straight hair? I just find it so baffling. Why would she do that to herself? Why? Isn’t it a huge bother?
Speaking of nonsequiturs, do you ever feel a little sorry for Chad Hugo, the invisible half of The Neptunes? Poor guy. He must be so bitter by now. I mean, the money probably helps ease the resentment, but still.
I really never could get into She-Who-Speaks-to-Dolphins, sorry.

PLN i feel yeah man- i love Chad and i think he constantly gets the shaft in that relationship. you know he’s the real talent in the group!
But I have to come down on Jill’s side here. Mariah is…well amazing even when she’s crazy. I just have to love her in a sick, “i’m watching a train wreck” kind of way. I don’t know what it is about her that makes her so interesting- maybe its the “i’m going to keep on trying to be a sexy star no matter what lengths i must lower myself to” attitude. Bu then you hear songs like “I’ll be there” and “My All” (which will make you tear up just a little) and you know why she’s magic. But I disagree about what her best song is-”Fantasy” (remix with ODB) is clearly the GREATEST Mariah song and video of all time.
The title reminds me of the line from That Uncertain Feeling: “Why did I like women’s breasts so much? I was clear on why I liked them, thanks, but why did I like them so much?”
