Jared Guinther was released on the ground that he did not meet enrollment criteria. For background, see here.
“To place someone in his condition in a combat role would create a wholly inappropriate and unnecessary risk of harm – not only to him, but all other members of his unit who would have to rely on him,” Blumenauer wrote in his letter to the Pentagon.
Blumenauer believes this is only one example of recruiting problems and wants the military to launch a broad investigation.
A good result all around. Let’s hope they can do something about the kinds of pressures they put on recruiters and the Army itself that result in things like this. Or this. And let’s hope it doesn’t take a newspaper investigation to stop the next kid who’s recruited despite disqualifying disability from having to serve.

Yay!
I have a friend who walks with a cane when he can walk at all. He is listed by SSA as “totally disabled.” The Army keeps trying to call him back. Amazing.

Greetings from beauitiful Bryce Canyon National Park and Ruby’s Inn. Now I remember why I’m still in Utah.
Excellent news. Thanks for passing it along.
It’s too bad the man wasn’t able to live the life he wished to. But it’s fortunate that neither he, nor others, were physically harmed while that conclusion was come to.
I’m so glad to know that Jared and the other soldiers who might have been in service with him are safer for this decision.
