I love it, although I found yesterday’s Italy/Australia game really disappointing. Winning on a penalty kick? Eh. I’m running out of work right now to catch the Brazil/Ghana match, which promises to be good. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the eventual triumph of either England or Italy (England because how can you not love them after Joe Cole’s amazing goal the other day, and Italy because I’m working with all Italians and they might kill me if I didn’t cheer for their country). There are some great photos from fans posted on the WC website.
And plus, the players are just so pretty (what can I say? I have a thing for guys with great legs).

I agree with both Jill and Jeff — anybody but Brazil, and England first. My dream is always an England-Argentina “Falklands-Malvinas” final, with splendid vengeance for Maradona’s cheating in 1986 and the heartbreak of the 1998 World Cup shootout.
And I am a huge fan of Steven Gerrard. Can’t comment on his legs.

I was hoping for Ghana to beat Brazil, just for the sheer unexpectedness of it all. Alas, it was not to be. I’m now rooting for Germany, because I used to live there, and Spain because I have roots there and they’re playing particularly well this year. Not that I think they’ve got any real chance against Brazil. I’m also rather hoping for England to get its butt kicked on general principles. And I was thrilled to see the US go down last in its division. A little humiliation can now and then can only be good for the US.
What I want to know, though, is what’s up with the fucked up hair so many of the players have? Like Fernando Torres (playing right now for Spain) or that Swede with the little tail off to the side.
A lot of them do seem to sport the “ends of hair chewed off by voles” art school look. For the longest time I thought Pernia had some kind of wacky reverse Mohawk, before I realized it was in fact more like a bald stripe. He doesn’t realize that he ought to just shave his head, like my boyfriend Zizou.

I think Germany beats Brazil in the final. But I’ve been wrong a few times so far (I thought Spain would beat France, today! but the French earned that fair and square.)
It’s interesting that Italy got that penalty at the very end of the game like that. Especially in the wake of the Italian match fixing scandal that came out a few months ago. I am not sure where the referee for the Italian game was from nor if the reach of the major players in the match fixing scandal could extend that far – but it’s interesting!

You bunch of haters. Screw European football; go South America, especially Argentina (if only because Maxi Rodríguez’s goal was fucking awesome, 12.5 times better than Joe Cole’s). Also, good on Ronaldo for shaking off his truly awful first two games to become the World Cup’s all-time scoring leader.
More locally, Bruce Arena really needs to resign or be sacked. He showed a complete inaptitude for in-game management, and he’s blaming everything in sight (including MLS!) other than himself for our atrocious showing. Sure, many players share in the blame, including Beasley and Donovan (who both completely disappeared) and Onyewu (who showed a great talent for doing the wrong thing at the absolute worst moments), but Arena is the coach and, like Steve Sampson before him, is responsible.
Call me a grumpy contrarian, but why is nationalism OK when it’s soccer (or football, as everyone I know from grad school likes to sanctimoniously point out to me)? Aren’t we generally against nationalistic mob displays?
How can anybody but an Englishmen support England? They are so boring. Anybody but England …. as for Italy … that Italian would have earned a perfect 10 for diving at any Olympics …. oh well … we went further than many … next time will be Australia … NO 1!
