I aim to please, Jill. Funny, I took a “ladylike” test last night shortly after I wrote this. Believe it or not, I actually got a lady-ish score instead of showing up as a frat boy.
Humor is good for all the reasons you stated, but it also sometimes distracts from the seriousness of an issue. It’s great to add to the dialogue, as long as it doesn’t replace meaningful analysis, which is another unfortunate side effect of this “generational thing.”
Well, you probably dress more ladylike than me.

It’s a good defense, Lauren, and it makes an important generational point. I need reminders constantly of this sort of thing, largely because for all my education and my British passport, I am almost completely incapable of irony. I do sincerity — to the point of an unbecoming smarminess — well. Ironic detachment? It bewilders me.
I’ve read Foucault and Lacan and Cixous. I’ve watched Seinfeld. I’ve done everything I can to immerse myself in the culture of detachment, wry commentary, and biting sarcasm. And dammit all to hell, I just can’t do it. (It’s why I never make good friends with English people.)
It is always nice to have someone do the translating for me, and Lauren, your post today did that well.
