Even if they only get a tie in the Senate, there are Republicans there who should wake up and realize that the current direction won't save their jobs next election. There will be times they get to override the vetoes.

Good news to wake up to over here in the UK - I'm so pleased about the House going Democrat and actually gleeful about Santorum taking the long walk home. Just keeping my fingers crossed for the Senate...

Hugo, I'm similarly pleased.

I can't fucking stand it when people fret that the Good Guys will never win, and if they do it's cause they aren't actually that good. If it's that bleak for you, stop paying attention to electoral politics and focus on the on-the-ground stuff. People can only take so much of getting shit on, and they'll get tired of it.

Can I just say how great it is that both California and Oregon shot down parental notification initiatives? And Arizona beat back a gay marriage ban? And of course, South Dakota backed away from their abortion ban!

Ledasmom:
I agree -- giving kids Election day off virtually guarantees that a *number* of parents will not easily be able to get to the polls. Any chance you can haul the kiddo(s) along with you to vote? I don't know if she/they are too young to sit quietly for a while when you are actually casting your ballot, or if they would go nutso in line (if there is one). In any case, I'd register a HUGE stink with the school district -- someone just wasn't thinkin'.

Laurie in MN
Where I voted for a bunch of Dems AND managed to sneak in a few Green Party votes while I was at it. *grin*

exangela -- Specter used to go either way, sometimes conservative sometimes progressive and be a decent Senator voting-wise, but you're right about this year. If he were up again I'd be voting against him on principle too. I've spent the last year wondering what the hell happened to Specter, especially after the MCA, I mean, he tried to change, then spoke against it, then voted for it anyway. If you look at his old voting record, he sometimes did stuff that made you want to scream but he was never this bad. It's like he's been replaced by a clone.

Those aren't Gilliard's words -- they are Tom Watson's. Regardless, it's true. The WFP failed to endorse a progressive woman running for state senate in order to maintain a republican state senate. Unless that is what you are for, then I would not vote on that line.

Just in case there are any Marylanders reading this, I gotta say it:

VOTE CARDIN!

On top of all the good things you can read about him here and there, I have bit of an anecdote about him and his calm under fire:
When I was in high school, Ben Cardin came to talk to my class about careers and things. However, my classmates had no interest in talking about careers: they wanted to take issue with his being a Democrat and the things he stood for. [Note: This was at a tiny private religious all-girls school, where the student body {and their parents} were mostly extremely conservative/fundy, and the faculty were mostly liberals {bless them!}] These girls really threw down, and in the most petty, obnoxious fashion; it would have been a test of any saint's patience to have to stand there and hear it. Imagine the worst comments by the trolls on any given blog, and take it up a notch -- that's what these girls were going for. Their parents had obviously gone to the trouble of preparing them for this day. Ridiculous, really.
But Cardin didn't flinch, didn't react to it at all, just listened to their questions and accusations attentively and responded respectfully. His ability to hang in there, not even looking annoyed, and to keep talking to those harpies is a testament to his patience, his ability to keep his cool under fire and to talk reason and sense to crazy fundies, in such a way that they start to listen. We need more like him in Congress, and we need them badly.
