Welcome back, whiney-mopey Adama. I didn’t miss you.

Are the writers just looking for excuses to make Olmos act “sad and troubled?” Clandestine operations often have a poison-pill attached. Yeah, it sucks that he had to kill his friend ‘n’ all, but he goes way to far with it.

And, his whole “I started the war” schtick is belied by, well, the backstory from previous episodes. Which is why we never see Athena wandering about in this episode (and most certainly not in Adama’s sight) because she would remind us (and him) that Boomer was a sleeper agent planted even before Adama’s Little Armistice Line Adventure.

OK, I *really* want to see what has become of Boomer. Is Boomer the Eight we see in the Inner Clique? It’s hard for me to believe that she’s so totally assimilated now, especially since Caprica Six still has misgivings and individuality and Three is going off the deep end.

    Gabriel,

I totally agree with you. I think this was just an off episode for the writers, not as bad as Black Market, but it wasn’t that good either.

I think they’re trying to keep with the moral conundrum between the two races. The fallback has always been, “The Cylons attacked for NO reason!” and that’s from people on the show and fans alike. This might have been an attempt to fuzzy that line of reasoning from now on, but like you, the Cylons had sleeper/conscious agents on the planets before so it doesn’t make that much sense.

And I loved Tigh. “I see it….I see it.” That chilled me for some reason. Though I wished the eye patch could have been black.

And here’s hoping Helo gets thrown out on his ass as XO.

I actually loved this ep… They progressed the character arc for Tigh–which worked well for me, because I love that character–and the moral ambiguity issue is the best thing I’ve seen so far this season, because the Cylon motives prior to now were too inexplicably evil. Of course they had sleeper agents…but when did they go from being spies to being terrorists?

What I find myself increasingly wanting from the Cylon character development is a race of beings that are omnipotent/mysterious/scary as hell but also sympathetic. “We waited 40 years and then decided to wipe out the human race for the hell of it” isn’t much of a motivation, and I was never able to accept the preemptive strike explanation. The human race needed to do something really nasty to the Cylons to provoke all that–much worse than just blowing up one of their own ships across the armistice line.

The best scene in the whole episode for me: Apollo backed up his father. If this had been first-season or even second-season Apollo (who was my least favorite character at that point for more or less this reason), he would have gotten all pissy and expressed moral outrage at his father’s actions. Way too much of an Archie/Meathead dynamic going on there in the first seasons, and I’m glad Apollo finally grew up.

I also liked the bit with Tigh rescuing Adama. It was hokey, sure, but Tigh was becoming way too one-dimensional in his bitterness and we needed to remember he has good qualities, too.

Agreed that the missing Athena issue is a big one, though. If they’re going to make Adama’s guilt a multi-episode arc (and I hope they do), Athena’s take on the situation could be really interesting…

    Cheers,

    TH

i enjoyed this episode as well. i don’t believe the cylons “waited 40 years and then decided to wipe out the human race ‘for the hell of it’”, but rather, they wanted revenge (or to eliminate their oppressors) immediately, but instead, in their cold and calculating logical ways, waited until they built up their war machine, and when they were ready, waged their war when they knew they could win.

i don’t think the actions of the humans during the 40 years had anything to do with the cylon attack. they (the cylons) were planning this from the beginning.

I liked the episode, I really did, but it was stupid because Adama was stupid. As Gabriel says, Sharon had been among the Colonial Fleet, what, two years by the time of the attack? Does Adama, like Kara, lose his ability to do basic math under pressure? And what would he do if he resigned, anyway? Leave the fleet in Helo or Tigh’s hands? Gah.

When I saw Three wake up, I just started laughing and laughing. God, I knew it. I knew these people, human and Cylon alike, find nothing so arousing as physically abusing someone or being physically abused. Great. But I am very intrigued by her religious experiences. I just hope something is made of it.

The Cylons had better have had a better plan in letting Bulldog go than “We hope he gets really angry and makes another attempt at killing Adama!”

    Anyone else wonder:
-how he killed the raider? Kara got into a wounded one, and while his may have been diseased, did he, what, tackle it to take it down? Punch it?
-If the Cylons tried to “breed” with him? I’m a little uncomfortable thinking this, that the only male they’d imply the Cylons have raped (or perhaps given a choice of which sexy, sexy bot he’d like to breed with) would be black, but it’s what they did with all their other captives we’ve seen and Three’s creepy pseudoseduction talk while he was behind bars was… creepy. They really want babies: their plan was to make babies with the OTHER best starship pilot, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t try with him.
-Why he didn’t realize that Adama would leave him behind? He knew the risks of the mission.

Tigh’s decision to be a badass again was a little too sudden, like just about everything this season. But oh, he really cares for Adama – I was so glad that he didn’t set Bulldog after him on purpose, that he really was just telling him the truth because he thought it was right. The String Music of Male Friendship. sigh.

And I didn’t get what “I see it” meant. What am I missing?

Kara wasn’t useless OR obnoxious! Either she’s a Cylon or this is preparation for next next week’s godawful I’m-going-to-scream-or-cry-my-way-through-it episode.

    So, Baltar?
Smooth and really messed up (remember the Xenabot was torturing him just one episode ago, but now he’s apparently banging her). Or just batshit crazy (there is no way this threesome, which considering it involves a 3 is kind of a funny thing to call it now that I consider it, is going to end weell for any of the involved parties). Finally, and this is a question I’ve had for a while, is it possible that the Cylon in his head is actually some sort of resurectction remnant from the Caprica Six, I mean she did basically act as a barrier to a nuclear blast for him.

I love that Tigh didn’t have any eyepatch at all when alone and drunk in his quarters. Of course, he wouldn’t. The patch is to hide the missing eye for other people’s benefit. I wish he never wore a patch at all.

If Tigh is going to not wear his eyepatch, they need to do a better job genning out his eye. Gah. These people need to look at a medical textbook — as I recall (from my days in Ophthalmology as a medical secretary/librarian), the human eyelid essentially closes *itself* if there is not an eyeball behind it. Or at least, the lids are held slackly/tend to sink inwards. There isn’t just a big, freakin’ BLACK HOLE where the eyeball used to be!!

The technology exists, especially with the level of computer generation they’re using on this show. As I understand it, the techs removed Mal’s *eyeblinks* from the squibs going off on the guy next to him in “Serenity” (the pilot for “Firefly”, not the movie). They could put in the correct physiological effect in this show. Or, if they want to save the budget and not squidge out the audience ;) they can use an eyepatch, like they are doing. :)

    nerdlet:
“I see it” referred to when exactly his hand/cigarette was coming into his remaining line of sight. Probably a good thing for him to ingrain into himself — just how restricted his sight is on his blind side — so he can compensate for it. Although to be honest, he *needs* to have more of a startle response to things coming up on that side. Given that he is an old military guy/war dog, and that the circumstances in which he lost that eye were extremely traumatic, I’d expect him to have *some* response to unexpected things coming up on that side.

    Nerdlet,

From the episode “The Farm” Athena/Sharon told Starbuck that the Cylons came to the conclusion that in order to “breed” with humans love needed to be involved.

That was how she and Helo were able to conceive Hera, so unless the Cylons were breeding Bulldog with another human female, or the set up a sleeper agent like Sharon then that would be a no go on the breeding.

(For the unnecessary record, if that’s the real reason the writers came up with I think its absolute crap but I”ll go along with it. And if anyone wants to know why: mammals don’t need emotions to procreate. And I can’t imagine that a machine human would either but like I said, I’ll go along with it. That was also why I didn’t believe Casey was Kara’s.)

TomCody: Yeah, I remember the “the magic ingredient is love!” part, but they captured Bulldog a year before the war even begun, so they could’ve been keeping him around for that reason until they heard about the Conception Of The Magicbaby.

I, too, hope love isn’t the answer, but I have the impression that the writers don’t know what the answer is.

Laurie: Thanks, I suppose I wasn’t watching closely enough.

Mandos, I agree that I’d like to see more of Boomer. How’s she reacting to the failure at New Caprica? What did she think of Doral killing CapricaSix? Why is she letting Three run the show, even though Three tried to box her?

I knew these people, human and Cylon alike, find nothing so arousing as physically abusing someone or being physically abused. Great. But I am very intrigued by her religious experiences. I just hope something is made of it.

Oh, yeah. In my irritation with Adama, I totally forgot to mention this part of the episode. Post-torture threesome = creepy. No wonder Three is going crazy. And where’s Hera, damnit?

Hera was supposed to appear in Torn, and does appear in the promo pics, but the scene was edited out of the final cut of the episode. Damnit. I love her boots, though. Very stylish, if somewhat impractical. You just know the Cylons don’t have much experience with small children when they decide white suede is an appropriate material for toddler footwear!

    Promo pics here:
    http://www.galactica.emedian.net/ep3.05.html

It seems weird that we haven’t seen her at all. Three seems to be the main focus of the On-the-Baseship plot, and given that she was the one to find Hera on New Caprica, I would’ve expected to see her spending some time with the kid. Heaven knows there are plenty of interchangeable aunties and uncles on the ship to babysit, but the way Three’s experience with the oracle was phrased, I would’ve expected to see her popping in to see the baby once in a while. She can’t be having torrid threesomes and torturing Baltar 24/7. I mean, she needs a hobby as well as a job.

Oh well. This show stopped worrying about making sense a while ago, so I don’t know why I’m surprised. On the bright side, all the Eights on the baseship mean that in the unlikely event that Helo and Sharon ever get their kid back, at least her new mommy will look familiar.

Anyone notice Adama at the end of the new Snoop video?

Haven’t seen anyone else comment on it…maybe I’m the only BSG/Snoop fan.

Prophethood seems to follow Baltar. When Baltar was with the humans, Roslin was a prophet. Now that he’s on the base ship, Three is the prophet.
