I’ve had enough caffeine that this is cracking me up.
DENVER (Nov. 27) – A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.
Merry Christmas, everybody! Or else!

My mother used to tell me that the peace symbol was satanic because it is a broken cross (or whatever). I never believed it, but this post spurred me to go look it up:
The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters “N” and “D,” standing for Nuclear Disarmament. In semaphore the letter “N” is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down “V,” and the letter “D” is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol. In the original design the lines widened at the edge of the circle.
So I guess my mom was right. Only devil worshiping hippies would be in favor of nuclear disarmament. $25 a day is to good for that person.
whats really funny is the guy actually fired everyone who thought he was a wacko for thinking this was a big deal. jeebus
Homeowners’ associations, gotta love ‘em. It seems like the only people who join up are busybodies with way too much time on their hands.
The peace sign has nothing at all to do with religion, as pointed out by the first commenter. And even if it *did* have a religious connotation, wasn’t Jesus known as The Prince of Peace?? Wouldn’t he like a peace sign being incorporated into his birthday party decorations??
But then, we’ll have to start assuming that modern Christmas has anything at all to do with Christ and well, oh nevermind.
Sorry, didn’t read the title.
And somone wanting them to stop getting shot at is in some way offensive to them?
As if the cross is any more of a better ornament or a little white baby Jesus with blue eyes. Mother fuckers. Oh gosh it feels good to say that.
Heh, I wish those nutbars could see my wreath/pentacle combination decoration.
Happy Solstice, everyone.
I hope those parents with kids in Iraq have put body armor in their stockings. I guess homeowner association didn’t know that there are many different versions of crosses either.
Is this restriction even legal? It seems like I remember homeowners’ associations’ attempts to place restrictions on political yard signs to be a first amendment violation, though I could be wrong.
I saw elsewhere that she used to be the president of the HOA. Maybe it’s just petty political squabbling?
so I suppose having doves in your decorations is also out of the question?
elektrodot’s thought was mine too. What on earth do you need a committee for when you intend to fire them anyway if they disagree with you, the all-knowing PRESIDENT of a Homeowners Association?
Boy, and I thought my co-op board was annoying.
“What’s my name?? MERRY CHRISTMAS, THAT’S MY NAME!!”

I usually just lurk (and love it here!), but had to chime in after prairielily’s comment: Somebody very smart and funny — maybe David Sedaris? — recently made a similar point. He (or she) asked, if Jesus had lived in the last century instead of 1 CE, would Xtians all be wearing tiny little golden electric chairs around their necks? Would Catholic churches have big, dramatic and colorful plaster sculptures of J.C. strapped into Ol’ Sparky, with smoke coming out of His ears?
. . . I mean, ewwwwwww.
WHy it’s prefectly obvious why people would object to peace symbols at Christmas, there is a far more insidious force behind Christmas. Learn more here:
not sure if the link in the last post worked, so I’m sending it again:

Thom, I just live on a regular street with no HOA, but from what understand our town has made it illegal to have political signs in our lawns, you can have them before the election but if they’re not removed within so many days after you get a fine or something. Which always strikes me as extremely unconstitutional, not to mention selective, as many people have advertising signs or support the troops signs, not to mention a range of holiday decorations. I’ve never gotten it.
