Whither the Stepford Wives?

Chris Matthews wishes for the good old days when uppity ladies like Elizabeth Edwards would smile pretty and nod along with their husbands instead of having anything of substance to contribute.

Thanks to Matt for sending this on. As a side note, I love Elizabeth Edwards. And John is really bringing his A-game here.

What the fuck? Why do people marry their equals? Are you serious? And when he said “does she bust your balls like this” I felt like Jeffrey Lebowski repeating the word “Johnson” increduously after Julianne Moore’s character. “Johnson?” “Busting your balls?” Who uses that phrase non-ironically outside of Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge?

I detest Chris Matthews. Good old days of Stepford Wives? So, she is speaking frankly and so she’s busting his balls? I can’t believe that we are still battling the “strong male” versus “ball busting battle axe” crap. Give me a break!

And, what, a politician’s wife trotting out the trusty old “he’s too serious and statesmanly to crack wise effectively” routine makes her some sort of castrating feminazi? Seriously, what kind of drug habit does Matthews have?

Elizabeth Edwards is a star. She’s brilliant. She’s progressive. She’s a blogger. I want to see her run for Senate in 2008 against Dole; I think she could do incredible things in federal office.

Jill, I’m a 1L and drowning in finals. I barely have time to read anything! How the hell are you still blogging?!

I agree that she’s great and all, but do we *really* want another political dynasty starting up? I mean, Jesus, at least Elizabeth Dole held a Cabinet post on her own before running for office.

Nice. Tweety hit the asshole jackpot in that clip. He even pulled out the “How PC” crap when the crowd booed him.

Nice to see a college crowd see Tweety’s bullshit for what it was.

Damnit, now I am wishing Zell Miller and Chris Matthews had really had that duel.

    I love the booing.

P.S. I’ve been a Stepford Wife. Extrapolating from myself, we suddenly shook ourselves, screamed in horror, and left our poor entitled husbands in confused dismay. We ran away to become cynical, uppitty feminists. That’s where we went.

Oh my God! I’m not surprised that the audience of (presumably liberal) college students booed and hissed at him, I absolutely would have too! I am, however, surprised that Elizabeth Edwards didn’t take him down a peg right then and there. She is a more self-controlled woman than I.

I interpreted it as a joke, but it’s still a little crass.

This is a tangent, but John’s explanation of power (need for and dangers of) near the beginning would have been great if he distinguished between “power over” and “power to”. Wait, or is that “nuance”?

    What a dick.

Yeah, sorry, that’s the extent of my contribution. I’m not actually sure who those people are.

Well, I suppose it’s better than when Larry King asked John how he could possibly deal with a titless wife.

You’d think that a man who can time the “hiss” to the second would have realized that he deserves it and maybe corrected the problem. No, we can count on him to keep on keeping on. There has got to be a better interviewer out there that they could hire, maybe someone who just got started, an infant in arms, a cuddly bunny, anything, anyone.

WOW I love the Edwards. Seriously, they need to do something where I can vote for one or both of them soon.

I’d vote for Elizabeth. She’s a great lady, and the people of NC have already proven that they’ll elect a woman (even if she’s a useless, carpetbagging Republican.)

John was the first sign of a rising populism in reaction to the crony-capitalist bent of this administration. He’s not as progressive outside of distributional issues as I would like; but he really believes in a government that ensures that the economic system is fair to working people. See also Heath Schuler and many of the incoming Democratic legislators. The gilded-age redistribution of wealth, which will become all the more apparent at the housing bubble deflates and ordinary people find themselves in foreclosure and without bankruptcy protection, will provoke a strong backlash.

I think Matthews was trying to be ironic.

But I don’t know how the guy has the nerve to show his face on camera, or anywhere else, after it was revealed that he takes huge “speaking fees” from advocacy groups like the National Venture Capital Association. NBC should shove a hardball up his pudgy ass.

brilliant! matthews was a wanker and both edwards were on him.

i’m liking mr edwards more and more… let’s see if he keeps talking honestly about the class war the rich are engaged in…

I would have seen it as an attempt to be ironic if Matthews had made the quip and then backtracked, explaining he doesn’t really agree with that. But he didn’t, he kept on in complete oblivion apparently of his blatent assininity. Fox News is such a waste of time and people actually pay money every month to watch that crap (cable teevee).

    I can’t believe it.

and I always knew Larry King was an ass, but that takes the cake, thanks for the link zuzu.

    See here.

Thanks, although I’m almost sorry I asked.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I saw a completely trivializing television portrayal of a woman with breast cancer (“Why I wore lipstick to my masectomy” on Lifetime), where a doctor seemed overly concerned with her not losing her “beautiful” breasts. Later, her husband’s satisfaction with her potential implants seemed to take focus over her health.

I assumed health professionals and husbands/partners of women with breast cancer would be more concerned with her health and survival, rather than the aesthetics of her body.

In addition to feeling naive in thinking that no one would seriously pose this question, with a woman who has breast cancer sitting right in front of them, I’m embarrassed to be lumped in a profession with asses such as Larry King and Chris Mathews.

If I were Edwards, I would have replied to “What ever happened to Stepford Wives” with “What ever happened to competant journalists?”
