What everyone forgets is that the Shannon Elizabeth thing was a joke in the first place, funny because Amanda got these results during a regular love/hate fest with Jeff Goldstein, who happened to write lots of conceptual pieces about Shannon Elizabeth at the time.

What’s funny is when it was pointed out repeatedly to Riehl that a lot of this stuff is a joke and, you know, funny, he called Jessica a bad feminist for being cheeky. Classic double bind. Feminists don’t have a sense of humor! This feminist does and that means she doesn’t take sexism seriously! Feminists are sluts! And they’re man-hating prudes! VAGINA DENTATA!!!!!!

Yes, I too have developed a fetish for sea-going ships since graduating college. I spend many a weekend in San Diego with my binoculars, gazing upon the steel bulwarks of the naval ships in the bay. I, however, do not restrict myself to ships of just one gender–so called “genderized-naval gazing” has no place among true aficionados.

You know, it’s sort of interesting that the exact comment thread that this post spawned out of – is the child of a post that really does little more than point out attractive bloggers and says “hey, these girls are hot and I want them to know that I think they’re hot”… But its alright, because hes on our side.

Actually, I don’t agree with that assessment at all. Alon was being ironic, for one thing, and also pointing out that the “You must be an ugly man-hater!” charge can’t stick to either Jessica or Amanda because both of them are attractive by any conventional standard.

Also, his last paragraph pointed up the absurdity of the standards of someone like Riehl; nothing will make him happy. If the people you hire are unattractive women, they must be man-hating jealous dykes; if they’re attractive, they must be unserious.

Nevermind that it just underscores how he has apparently been completely unable to understand the context of Amanda’s post and photo.

*Though admittedly most jocks taking the class aren’t exactly pursuing it in order to become the next West, just as most white jocks taking sociology aren’t planning on following in the footsteps of Hoffer. (As, an aside my favorite “Jock Major” was the one pursued by one of my favorite UF Football players “Recreation Management” which honestly sounds like a high-falutin’ term for party planner and/or a drug dealer).
