I just caught up. I had gotten so behind. I’ve seen six episodes in the last two days and I’m still kind of hung up on Maelstrom.

    But I’ll start…

Six smacking Tigh right back and even harder.

Roslin’s cancer is back? (Camera zoom in on Helo) What do the legal minds around these parts think of Lee’s cross?

What was that eyelock with Sam and Tori? Tori’s having visions too?

What do Sam and Tigh have in common? Why can they hear the music when no one else seems to be able to?

Is there really only one more episode this season? Couldn’t we have skipped most of those in the middle and not really have lost anything? I used to drive to my parents first chance I got after a new episode. Yesterday when I was visiting, I realized I had six episodes piled up on their TIVO. Too bad the TIVO messed up the channel changing and I was watching Faux News instead of Maelstrom. Oh the horror! It was that Rush Limbaugh/Anne Coulter oval office skit from that dratted “comedy” show of theirs. I had to go home and get it from iTunes.

What do the legal minds around these parts think of Lee’s cross?

This nearly ruined the episode for me. Thank the gods for the Return of Tigh (the Six punch, “It’s in the WALLS!!!”, and getting tucked in by Adama!), because Lee’s motivation for joining Baltar’s defense and discrediting Roslin makes no sense. Maybe I don’t know enough about law? We’re told Lee goes against his dad because he believes in justice and the truth, and the system’s ability to discover/achieve those things. But what does Roslin taking drugs now have to do with what she saw and experienced on New Caprica? Does he believe she hallucinated Baltar’s signature on the execution order?

I’m not sure we’re supposed to believe that’s why he’s doing it. Or at least I sure as hell don’t. That’s why the defense lawyer was able to manipulate him so well with the “you’re just doing this to get back at daddy” bit.

I think Lee’s motives for joining the defense team are a mystery, even to Lee. I think there’s more to it than him trying to emerge from his father’s shadow. That’s part of what I like so well about the show, i.e., the characters are often just as confused and fucked up as the rest of us.

I’ve grown to respect Caprica Six over the seasons, and she didn’t disappoint the other night. However, I still miss my heart throb: Starbuck. I loved how tough and skilled her character was, yet she was still vulnerable at times. Does anyone know if her “death” means Katee Sackhoff has actually left the show permanently, or is this some plot device in which she’ll later return? If it’s the latter it would mean that she must have ejected at the last second without the ejection being detected by Apollo, and then rescued by the Cylons (probably Leoben, her captor during the Cylon occupation of New Caprica).

Come back to us, Starbuck! We need you! I need you!

Are Tigh, Sam and Tori cylons?

    John Lucid 3.20.2007 at 12:19 pm |

    Sirkowski:

I was also wondering that, given that they seem to be the only ones who can hear that music.

However, I don’t care if Starbuck’s a Cylon; I just want her back, goddamnit. How long must my poor heart pine for my lost viper jock?

I don’t think–unless they have a twist for season 4–that they could have made that MORE obvious that Tori, Tigh and Sam are sleeper cylons. And I’ve read spoilers to see if I was correct, and I’m not going to finish this sentence

I apologize, I should have put possible spoilers at the beginning of my post but when I tried to stop it it’d already gone through. To clarify, I know some spoilers but probably not what you’re thinking…;)

Who the heck is “Tori”? The woman playing skee-ball with Sam?

Am I crazy, or was this the first time we definitely saw head-Baltar or head-Caprica convey real novel information to the person whose head they inhabit? I thought they were always pretty careful about keeping that ambiguous…Caprica would be telling Baltar all this stuff, but it could all be interpreted as stories made up by his own subconscious. But there’s no way Caprica’s subconscious could have known about Ellen, right?

I do mean “Caprica,” don’t I? White women on TV are hard enough to keep straight when they each have distinct roles…

Funny: One of the other captain-judges going “wtf, Adama, you can’t make someone shut up just because you want them to.” Ahhhhh, so nice to see a little less fascism for once.

Roslin snapping at Tory for not combing her hair? Yowch. Did like, at least, that Tory’s confusion about the documents last week has been followed up on as “general confusion because she hears the pretty music” and not maliciousness – thought they were going to imply that she was going to cheat over the defense.

Sad: Cylon-baby blood is useless. I certainly hope they explain that.

Lee is a jerk. But: did Roslin deliver any unique testimony? Sure, as current and former president, her testimony might hold more weight than that of other people, but I didn’t recall her saying much that couldn’t be verified by other people to prove she’s not crazy and hallucinating. They did not, after all, mention that she saw Baltar with Six in one of her chamalla-induced flashbacks.

The prosecuter was awesome in her first scene and wtf-rambly in what could have been an awesome second scene. There is no excuse for bad writing that could have easily been great writing. I am so confused by what happened there.

People possibly being Cylons: It would only be interesting if Tigh were a Cylon. Don’t really care about the others.

There’s a thread over on the Sci-Fi forums about the (apparent) declining role of women on BSG that has actually turned out fairly well (I’m only into the first 45 pages, so maybe it gets worse) for a discussion of feminism on a mainstream forum. Anyway, Ronald Moore’s wife, aka Terry Dresbach, aka MrsRon (irony, she says), former costume designer for Buffy and Carnivale and current maker of taxidermy dioramas, came into the thread pretty early on. She defended the role of women on the show for a while, and I disagreed with her argument (she mostly takes the “why does everyone have to be a mommy or dead” thing to mean that being a mother is inherently a bad thing, which isn’t really the idea) and thought she was probably there to defend the show as a whole.

But then around here she starts talking about the casting:
    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=240#

And the actresses on Buffy, excepting Amber Benson (size 4), are all 00? Wow. http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=300#

Admission that, yes, the show is not as gender-blind as they’d hoped – no surprise, but it’s good that someone close to the show sees it: http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=320#

Katee Sackhoff did lose 20 pounds because, in part, of mockery from fans for being “fat”:

    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=440#

And more on the casting, and what I think is the most interesting part:
    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=600#
    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2267536&st=640#

I have the same problem with the show as you do. I think that when the original casting was done, it was done primarily done by two white men, David Eick and Michael Rymer. I do not believe that diversity was a very high priority for them and it shows. i also believe that they chose the women on the show to fit the typical male stereotype of what attractive women are supposed to look like. Even Dualla fits an acceptable whiite cultural stereotype of what attractive is. She is light skinned with “good hair”, and has very caucasian features, which makes sense as she is bi-racial. In truth there is no Uhuru on the show.
So I do not “see” that there was a concern for diversity in the intial casting of the show. I have seen it since Ron became involved, and I know that I have been there pushng him and reminding him.

(about the black gangster/pimp in “Black Market”)

I pointed it out to Ron, and he acknowledgedthe point, but said at the time, he was so excited to get Bill Duke, he didn’t think of anything else. Of course that’s the whole point. The casting director who was probably white gave them some choices, Bill Duke among them. They jumped for Bill Duke, not becaus e he was black but because he’s an awesome actor.
But if it had been you or I, we would have passed on Mr. Duke, even if it meant going with a less talented actor, because there would be no way we would want to see another African American pimp. BUT, there it is in a nutshell. Ron is incredibly progressive, he will talk the talk and walk the walk as best as he can considering. Considering that he grew up in an all white world. He just can’t see it the way you or I might, becuse you know it intimately, and I have lived as close to it as you can possibly get. If I point things out to him, he will get it, because he is smart and he is willing. But there has to be someone to point out the little things.

Okay, so sure, the racial problem is basically what everyone else thought it was: the show was originally cast by white guys who weren’t looking for diversity (AND who had no idea why the presence of multiple black characters was such a big deal in the original series), and the show is currently cast by a white guy who does want diversity but still doesn’t fully get it. So in that it’s not necessarily all that much different from many, many shows on tv, but it is nice to see it explicitly stated and acknowledged as a problem that they’re edging towards fixing.

And Ronald Moore answers what Roslin did for the Resistance. Yay.

Tori (or it may be Tory) is Roslin’s assistant. I forget who was playing electronic pyramid with Sam-was that Seelix (the avionics specialist who was just accepted into flight training a couple of weeks ago)?

I believe Head-Six gave Baltar novel info in season one, such as pointing out the tracking device in the command center and telling him there were cylons aboard the ship.

I think Lee’s motives for joining the defense team are a mystery, even to Lee. I think there’s more to it than him trying to emerge from his father’s shadow.

I agree, though I think my last comment implied otherwise. I think the daddy thing is a part of it, but I was more referring to the lawyer’s ability to get to him by questioning his reasons for being there, which, as you say, he doesn’t seem to know. His line of questioning to Roslin really got to Adm. Adama, but he couldn’t know how they feel towards each other, could he? I mean, sometimes I haven’t caught all their subtext until I watch a scene a second time, and we get to listen in on a lot more than Lee does.

Roslin+Adama, btw, possibly my favorite “love story” ever. Probably because it’s so immensely understated and doesn’t become what their characters are, like it did with Lee and Starbuck for a while there. I miss Starbuck :(

I miss Starbuck, myself. I went over to the Sci-Fi forums, and was shocked that Katee Sackoff was ridiculed for her weight! WTF?! Apparently some people don’t know an athlete’s body, when they see one. Oh, and the links Amber Benson who played “Tara” on BTVS? Only a size 4. Infuriating.

Katee is hot, by the way. Thank you nerdlet for linking to the “weight” discussions. Disgusting, but now we’re all aware of what we’re up against. I knew Hollywood to be cruel…

thank you to Nerdlet above for posting those links. I’d never heard of the fans giving Katee grief for being “fat”. That’s completely f’ed up.

Like holly r. and Kevin, thanks for the immense insight, nerdlet, and also for bringing up Katee Sackhoff’s alleged “weight” issue. I thought she looked a little thinner in recent episodes, but it’s often hard for me to tell from one episode to the next. I can’t believe ANYONE would think she was fat. She is HOT, and always has been. I’ll never understand that mentality. What world do these assholes live in? How many women do they see walking around that look like anorexic supermodels? As holly r. mentioned, Ms. Sackhoff has an athletic physique. Is that unattractive to them, or maybe threatening? If Ms. Sackhoff is even one quarter as tough as her character on BSG is, she could probably kick the asses of almost all of her “fat” critics. I bet if she went up to one of her weight critics and said, “So, you think I’m FAT!?!”, he would probably piss his pants. I’m assuming most of them are men, because most of the harshest critics of female weight are men. (Women can be bad too, mind you, but most still seem to be men.)

If Katee needs a shoulder to cry on, would one of you tell her I’m available to console her? Hell, I’ll take her to a buffet and tell her, “Eat up, my lady.” I know we were made for each other. You’d think after receiving 6,000 love letters from me that she would agree, but apparently not yet. I think this 6,001st letter will finally persuade her.

I’m glad to see a good episode after the slump of the last few. The character of Roslin is getting under my skin like no other. I want to love her, but between child labor, book burning, anti-abortion laws and the whole airlocking hobby…. I think she’s losing her soul.

    Chuck 3.20.2007 at 8:46 pm |

I thought it was a really good episode, though I totally had a “what the fuck” moment with TIgh. What’s he even doing anymore?

It’s awesome that the show has *us* going on the “well, who’s a cylon?” witch-hunt which was the focus of a few eps. a long time ago but has kind of fallen by the wayside since among the characters on the show. That’s really a sign of the strength of the plot on the show, even on off-episodes.

I can’t wait for next week’s episode when, for one last time this season, I’ll get to raise my fist and say “Damn you, Ron Moore!” with the closing cut to credits.

I’m heart-broken to realize that Katee’s being beaten down over her weight. I’m currently buffing up to get into the RCMP and view her as an inspirational woman who is so obviously strong and still sexy. If nothing else she’s still a role model for women but one more sad example of men being completely oblivious to reality. Can’t live with them. Can’t get them to STFU.

Athletic body = fat? Or…strong woman = scary?
With the corollary: helpless waif = sexy.

    Aren’t we objectifying a woman’s body on a feminist blog…?
    lol
But yes, she’s got the perfect bod! X-D

    *sigh*

I can’t believe it’s almost over for another season.

I also can’t believe that anyone could ever think that Katee Sackhoff was fat. (What. The. Fuck.)

PS I thought that Tigh was probably one of the final five ever since D’Anna’s more-or-less last words in Rapture.

I’ve seen Katee Sackhoff jogging the Stanley Park seawall, and a friend of mine saw her doing the same thing on another occasion. From what I saw, she’s a healthy, athletic young woman with a very nice shape shown off nicely by her workout gear. And cute, too (what? I’m not blind). She looked like she was in pretty good shape, with a slow but steady pace that *I* certainly wouldn’t be able to sustain over the whole seawall. I mean, it’s not exactly the Grouse Grind, but it’s also not a jog for a jogging dilettante, or someone who’s not in good physical condition.

On a slightly related note (science fiction), I can remember reading on a message board some unhinged complaints regarding Summer Glau in the movie Serenity. Apparently she had fat thighs and those made her ugly and gross and in need of dieting. Yes, THAT Summer Glau, who’s about the size of a toothpick.

I thought it was kind of pathetic that Glau was being excoriated essentially for being a dancer, because yeah, dancers often do have muscular thighs. I mean, she did all her own stunts! I’m betting she’s a hell of a lot fitter than a woman who’s dieted her strong thighs away and is no longer capable of athletic feats.

At least when it’s women like Katee Sackhoff or Amber Benson, who are slim and gorgeous but also curvier than the usual Hollywood starlet, I can kind of see where people are getting the ‘fat’ idea from. I disagree totally, but I can at least follow the flawed logic that leads them to criticise these actresses. I just don’t understand how anyone could look at a picture of Summer Glau and think she was overweight, even if they were using Hollywood standards rather than real world standards.

They could have junked the last 4 episodes and made them all the trial… there was so much good stuff in this episode that cries out for longer exposition and background to people’s motivation. BSG has really dropped the ball. I was almost thinking it had jumped the shark. I’m still not convinced. If they take all the good stuff and throw it into two episodes and draw out all this lame crap as what they think people want–they will plummet to the recesses of tv obscurity.

    Roxanne 3.23.2007 at 12:43 pm |

The network has just added nine episodes to next season, which might mean that it’s a wrap.
