I’m glad you have more than one animal. Our three entertain themselves when their primary walker (me) feels like death warmed over. They have a yard, with a cat in the next one that likes to look at Dixie, so she’s got plenty to do. And the boys are always busy working themselves into frenzies over this or that. (Mom coming home, Becky coming home, Kaitlyn coming home, the UPS guy bringing a package to the door, a car pulling into the driveway, any of our friends or family coming inside, I could go on for days.) Dixie works herself up as well.

When we got cable, we had to move the couches around because the cable box connector is on the opposite side of where the tv was. Yes, we have cable now, so happy, but the TV faces the window! And “we” means my sister and mother, because I was doped up and in pain and not moving.

So we used to have the TV at an angle by the window wall. There was an ottoman there, but someone (me, probably) broke it by standing on it. We finally got rid of it – someone who can fix things wanted to fix it. Before we did, we had a hell of a lot of fun making it look normal, then letting people sit on it and sink down.

Now we have the long couch in front of the window. When someone comes up to the house or walks down the street (even on the other side!) and the dogs notice and the door is shut so they can’t rush to the screen door (it’s glass. Dixie licks it) they jump on the couch. Woe to any human fool enough to fall asleep there. The boys are irritating, but it’s Dixie you gotta watch out for – all 50 pounds of stupid dog standing on your stomach and boobs.

So the cushion fabric is ripped up, go ahead Dixie, rip the couch up.

But nothing as bad as what June did! Of course, they don’t hide their toys in the couch cushions.

It’s only a few rips and scratches, our couch is too comfy to get rid of.

And thunderstorms – benadryl in white bread. Sandwich white bread is wonderful for hiding pills – it’s squishy and big. Last night, Dixie scratched at the bathroom door, even though there were other humans to comfort her.

I give her two benadryl and just rub her belly, sleep downstairs. That goes for thunderstorms and fireworks as well.

If we get it in her early enough, she does okay.

During the worst storm of the century (July 2003) for Memphis, I was asleep and the dogs were outside. Dixie tried to get in the house by going behind the AC next to mom’s bedroom window, and she hurt her leg.

Official doggie tranks cost too much, and thanks to my allergies (one is dogs, yes) we always have benadryl on hand and she hasn’t hurt herself further.

She’ll be 10 in May, and she’s a big dog. But she’s not showing her age, unless it’s to her advantage. She once had a limp in her left back leg, so I let her in. Then her right leg was hurting! How freaky. Dogs.

Junebug’s a cutie, and it’s nice of the cats to allow her to live there.

I think only a couple posts under that label do not have a picture of a pup. The first one is their debut youtube video. They’re international internet superstars. The endorsement offers will be rolling in any day now. (I have internet friends in Oz, Kiwiland, the UK, Canuckistan, and California and they all think they’re adorable.)

June’s precious. I love the curly tail – Dixie’s got one, and so does Wickett. Mikey has a stub. We only had one dog who had a non-stub tail that did not curl, and he died before he was 6 months old. Jasmine and Ginger had stubs as well.

Dixie has a chow tongue, which I adore. A new neighbor (they’ve been here less than a year) has a fullblood chow – or at least a dog with more chow than Dixie. She’s got the tongue. I love chows and chow mixes, mainly for the tongue and beauty, though pure chows need monthly haircuts. I’ve seen two, and they both had long, thick, matted fur. Dixie’s hair is not matted. She’s also not as wide as a chow. But they’re all equally adorable.

Smooch rhymes with pooch for a reason. And it’s called “fur”niture for a reason.
