Jess,

You don't need to have a huge contingency to start your own TBTN event. If you've got an entire (or even most) women's studies class into it, you've got plenty of people to organize it and pull it off. If people aren't aware it's an issue, make them aware. And make them care.
My advice to you is to get these people in your wst class together and plan (if you can't pull it off for this year, plan for next year, and follow through). Try to contact one of the people from Ann Arbor who's organizing the march there to get some pointers and ideas, talk to people elsewhere to get ideas, but you definitely don't need to rely on them for a successful event. Don't get discouraged if turnout is low - it usually will be the first year it happens. It'll grow. If you're worried about it, though, maybe condense it to just a speak-out for the first year, then add the march for next year. (Oh, and don't underestimate the power of Facebook events. I just got back from an event that managed to pull in 43 people - about 35 more than i'd expected would show...something I attribute largely to the facebook event I made.)
Good luck!

UC Berkeley is having a Take Back the Night candlelight vigil on Thursday, April 12th from 6-8:30 PM on the steps of Sproul Hall. There will be various speakers, primarily women telling their own stories of rape and sexual harassment.

We were just talking about Ann Arbors Take Back The Night event in my women's studies class. Im a student at Adrian College and lately we have been feeling less then safe here. There are incidents that happen to girls around our campus that our administration feels like blowing off, covering up, or pushing aside as "not a big deal." We thought about having our own Take Back The Night, but then we realized that we probably wouldn't recieve much support or participation. Sure it sounds good in our women's studies class, but much of campus isnt even aware of the threats that are taking place against the girls here. We then thought about attending different campus's take back the night's, but that wouldnt help our OWN problem. I hope that we can find a way to get support from different campus's to come here and help us put on our own Take Back The Night with many participants.

Whoa. Definitely didn't expect someone to have already posted Smith's info. Word.
But PS about Smith's TBTN: There won't be a march. Just a speakout and a candlelight vigil. Both, though, still (obviously) powerful and worth attending! There will also be at least one trained (and wonderful) sexual assault counselor on hand at the event.
Annnnd we've also got the Clothesline Project up all week, all day/every day (unless it rains), on Seelye lawn. And a couple other events this week, but I don't want this comment to be too long. Contact: aware(at)smith(dot)edu
