philadelphia – didn’t the mayor controversially say something recently about designating philly as a city upholding gay rights or whatever? (i don’t quite remember, but it was in my peripheral vision while reading a nytimes article sometime this week.) i’m wondering if he made a similar committment to ending discrimination against transgendered individuals.

does anyone know when he said it and what his exact words were?

Piny, bless your heart for posting this. This will help bring the national exposure that this case needs. I knew Erika; she was a regular visitor at the Trans Health Information Project weekly drop-in that I also was going to at the time.

I went to the Philadelphia Dyke March yesterday; during speeches, the subject of Erika’s murder was brought up. The Phila Police Dept’s liason spoke about what the PPD is supposedly doing to reach out to the LGBT community; but while the PPD seems to be doing some things to mollify white, middle class lesbians and gays, they are doing *nothing* to rein in police abuse of trans people of color, especially in the 6th district, where the police are out of control. His words rang hollow; they were nothing but feel-good bullshit.
