I’m pro-choice because a pro-”life” stance assumes that uteruses are the human assembly line manufaturing device, which merely come with inconvenient humans attached to them — and that life would be so much simpler if that weren’t the case.

I recently got engaged in a discussion about whether or not it was right for a woman’s husband to have to sign off on her tubal litigation surgery. After expressing my belief that although I love my husband and would of course take his opinion into account on my decision I felt it completely wrong that I would be required to get his permission, someone posted “with an attitude like that, it’s a wonder you’re still married” and compared me to a child kicking and screaming to get what I want, when I want it.

I am pro-choice because there are men and women out there who believe that I am incapable of making a valid decision about my body without the help of a man or a law, and they are wrong.

I am pro-choice because I believe ALL women are entitled to safe, legal medical care. People who are so-called “pro-life” would remove this inalienable right from all women and make them choose illegal, lethal medical care if they wanted to terminate. That is anything BUT pro-life.

So either you’re for women having safe, leagal medical care or illegal lethal medical care. I know which side of LIFE I stand upon.

I am pro-choice because “love of life”, “concern for women”, “morality”, nor Jesus Christ himself have EVER paid for groceries for a hungry child, felt the pain of labor, cured pregnancy-induced illness or disability, or resurected one single woman who died of childbirth complications from the dead.

I am pro-choice because women are full human beings with a right to bodily integrity. Even if pregnancy was like winning the lottery, and beautiful butterflies flew effortlessly out of a woman’s vagina at delivery instead of a bloody, squalling baby, women would STILL have the right to choose NOT to be pregnant or deliver.

I wrote an open letter to the Christian right on my blog that goes into detail about how I see the whole of the right’s move to legislate morality.

Jill, that's a great post! I'd love to use it on my website. Reproductive freedom, violence against women, lgbt rights, equal pay are all issues I'm passionate about. Abortion has played a positive role in my life and allowed me to go to med school, become an ob/gyn and volunteer at planned parenthood clinic.

I am pro-choice because I believe childbirth should never be a punishment. (It pretty much was for my mother.)
