Great round up, Jill. Viel gluck to you on finals, and extra points to Krugman for invoking Talking Heads.

Augh, curses! So many enticing links, and me with too much homework to do!

Good luck with your studying :)

From the author of the article who supports the passing of the ENDA without regards for trans rights:

I simply don’t get how I am just as closely related to a transsexual (who is often not gay) as I am to a lesbian (who is).

Wow. Maybe because queer people and trans people alike are stigmatized for their non-normative gender expressions? Maybe because homophobia and transphobia both stem from sexism? What is this guy thinking?

or that gender and sexuality are often linked? i found that article disturbing, esp when he started down the “person who wants to cut off their penis” road.

Self promotion: I wrote about a few things last week:

I have a post about men and feminism, including my own thoughts and experiences as a man in feminist spaces.
I also have a post about that Chivalry article that was critiqued on here.
And, one about a controversy surrounding sexism in a web comic.

    hope all is well, kactus.

Oh, all is very, very well. But I’m in the middle of a move in real life, and it’s time for a change. I feel great!

I’m still trying to get confirmation on that Warner Bros. claim. So far, deadlinehollywooddaily.com is the only venue reporting it. I’m not yet convinced it’s true.

Krugman is right about how some progressives have this foolish notion of looking at the leading conservative of the previous generation through rose-colored glasses. It happened with Goldwater, before him Robert A. Taft, before him Calvin Coolidge, ad nauseum back to John Adams. Now it’s happening with Reagan. Gag.

As one of the few people you will hear from who actually sat through “The Brave One,” I can say that Foster’s expert performance (and to a lesser extent, Terence Howard’s) was the only thing that made that movie endurable. I hope uccellina’s skepticism is justified; it’s unsettling to think a major movie studio exec could be that dumb.

In regards to the NYT article about gay and lesbian elderly being treated poorly – it’s a really sad story, and I’m glad the NYT chose to cover it… and it was a generally good article… but one sentence stood out to me…

“Jalna Perry, a 77-year-old lesbian and psychiatrist in Boston, is out, she said…”

I love how they list “lesbian” and “psychiatrist” together as if they are both her professions! Haha… I would have written “lesbian who is a psychiatrist” or “psychiatrist who is a lesbian.”

Well, since it’s shameless self-promotion, I posted on that Salon article about why the T is in LGBT. I was, let’s say, less than impressed. I’m hoping that by “really good,” for that article Jill meant “really good for blogging because it’s easy to rip to shreds.” ;)

Can we just ban modeling, seriously? It ruins kids’ lives, kills women after ruining their health, screws up non-model’s perceptions of their bodies, is airbrushed full of lies anyway, and is based around the notion that it makes some sort of sense to pay 12k for a beaded evening gown. If designers are going to design for walking skeletons, why make real people suffer? Create some robots to meet your sick specifications.

Those who still want to design clothes should be forced to design for the median weight of the women in their country. I think that’s about a size 12 in the US. Sure as hell ain’t 00.

Agreed with Nellie and catswym. Incidentally, the NYTimes features a lesbian woman who is suing over an incident that is the perfect example of why we need protection for gender expression (not only in employment, but also in public accommodations).

well I’ll throw myself out there with something I wrote lately about women in fantasy novels
It’s not as eloquent as I might have liked, I was mostly just trying to get my thoughts and feelings on the subject out before too much time elapsed from finishing the most recent book.

Dr. C: In California, only the pregnant woman has the right to end her fetus’s life — not an abusive husband, not a random stranger. Penal Code Section 187. This has not created any slippery slope for exalting the life of the fetus above the mother’s.

The “T” in LGBT is there because we’ve been in the gay rights movement from the beginning, and were only acknowledged in the past 15 or so years.

The “T” is also there because we face a lot of the same discrimination as LGB people, although we often get it worse because we’re seen as “men who cut off our penises, have a vagina constructed, and become a woman,” which is a pretty offensive and practically misogynistic dismissal of what we go through.

Also, there’s 60+ pages of letters linked from the article page that go into a lot more detail on why we’re part of the movement.

Monica Roberts covers “Why the T in LGBT” over a series of blog posts here.

She knows her stuff. This is the history of T involvement with and rejection from the gay rights movement throughout that movement’s history.
