My Shameless Soliciting of Travel Advice

Jill usually gets some pretty sweet advice on traveling, and Feministe readers seem to come from far and wide to post comments and such so hopefully this request for travel advice will garner some good response (pleeeasse!)

I’ve got a fairly large chunk of travel time in December/January and I’m trying to figure out where I want to go. Initially I thought Turkey. Turkey for a long time, to see it all. But I’m also kind of broke. Well, not totally broke (yet), but I’m definitely not rolling in the dough.

So, I’ve decided on exploring upper Egypt and then crossing the border into Jordan. If anyone has been to Jordan and has any advice on places to go, things to do, stuff to see..pass it on? Thank you!

Petra! Go to the fabulous rock-cut tombs!

Jerash! There are fabulous ruins from the Roman period there: colonnades, the Oval Forum (unusual, as most fora are rectangular), temples, mosaics (in the church of St. John the Baptist), a theatre, tetrapyla, and a two-story nymphaeum. The columns are something to see, with intricately detailed capitals with acanthus leaf motifs. The architecture of Roman Jerash is interesting for showing the interactions between local styles and the usual Romano-Hellenistic forms.

Petra, Petra, Petra! Especially if you’re a fan of Indiana Jones. ;)

I bet you could actually get a pretty cheap flight to Turkey if you still wanted to do that. And Istanbul is supposed to be incredible in the winter. I’m probably going there in December myself, either by bus (two days, crossing through Bulgaria) or plane if I can save up enough.

Look, skip Jordan. Get a visa to Syria and see Damascus and Aleppo. Then take a side trip through Lebanon and see Beirut, but also the various valleys. Jordan = chubby American tourists on package tours
