What're they, cats?) This totally reminds me of how, after emancipation, black women (especially in Atlanta) took up jobs as washer women and (part time) live-in maids/nannies. They were subjected to the exact same abuses (excluding the passport part, obviously). Also, wasn't there an issue with native workers working in ambassador's homes? (their husbands go astray? What’re they, cats?)
