Got to play this at a friend’s house over Thanksgiving. It’s tons of fun, especially when your group is pretty much evenly divided between video game geeks and band geeks.
Since neither of my group’s resident drummers were in residence, I somehow ended up as the drummer after a few turns, which was really difficult for my somewhat rhythm challenged self but still a lot of fun.
I was slightly annoyed by the small number of songs with female vocalists. I’m a soprano, darnit! A lot of mainstream rock isn’t in my comfortable vocal range at all. Not the game makers’ fault, but that doesn’t make it any easier for me.
Songs I want to see? Anything by Within Temptation. Maybe “What Have You Done”, “Angels”, or “Heart of Everything.”

Sycorax: I second that. Picking up Karaoke revolution and giving it a whirl in front of my guitarist has to have been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I’d see a note coming and know it was to high so I’d sing a harmony or drop an octave only to have the machine tell me I was wrong. I’m dreading getting invited to my first Rock Band party.

As for songs I’d love to see, it’d be a kick to see some of the crazy stuff make it onto a release. Maybe Emperor’s “Elegy to Icarus” or Opeth’s “Bleak.”

I’m totally in love with Rock Band, but I’m having the same difficulty with the singing that I’ve seen actual guitarists having when picking up Guitar Hero for the first time: the habits of real-life musicians are a hindrance to gameplay.

I'm not too crazy about this stuff right now. As far as my dream Guitar Hero/Rock Band songs go, I'll have to go with the 1973 live version of Dazed and Confused (Led Zeppelin). Others would be You Better Run (Pat Benatar), November Rain (Guns 'N' Roses), I Would Die 4 U (Prince & the Revolution), Abacab (Genesis), Brother Where You Bound (Supertramp), 2112 (Rush), Thunderstruck (AC/DC), I Hate Myself for Loving You (Joan Jett), The Bitch is Back (Elton John), Ramblin' Gamblin' Man (Bob Seger), and Let It Rain (Eric Clapton).

I play GH2…and at some point in the near future we’re getting this. Just the GameSpy review, let alone the GameSpy monster review, convinced me of that! We’re going to wait until friends are in town for the full effect, I think. I’m going to try vocals, as I’ve never gotten to play any of those karaoke games.

You’re right, Ferox — when I played yesterday in solo mode with a randomly chosen avatar, they made me male and all of my band mates male, as well. But today my husband and I were playing, and they gave us a female bassist. I’m guessing that it was just a fluke the first time around?

My experience with the default backup band members in solo mode has been different — it seems like the backup members are randomly gendered, save the singer (who always matches the actual band’s singer’s gender).

If you haven’t, by the way, you should check out the bonus songs (which are unlocked most easily by just playing quickly through in solo mode, since Band World Tour is so slow and sporadic in introducing new songs). The ratio of female-to-male lead singers is much higher than in the main songs. I also think the bonus songs are really good — the Freezepop song is a ridiculous amount of fun on all four modes, especially.
