And this is the part at which I wander through the door

Hi all. My name is kactus, and as of today I’m officially a blogger at feministe. I used to run a somewhat popular little blog called Super Babymama, til I went through a midlife crisis one day and exploded it. In one magical un-doable POOF I deleted almost two years of writing, and lost almost all of it forever. So then less than a week later I realized what a calamitous mistake I’d made and re-started Super Babymama, trying to learn from why I had exploded it in in the first place.

I am an unapologetic middle aged dykish fat single mom formerly on welfare still poor living in government housing. I am disabled and basically housebound in the winter, since the city I live in seems to be designed for drivers rather than pedestrians and people in wheelchairs and scooters. My commitments are basic and make up the fabric of who I am: I commit myself to my daughters, to my friends, to the strong women who have made my life full of color and balance. I commit myself to fighting racism, classism, and sexism, always recognizing that the fight begins with me.

Lately I have become a domesticated goddess, stunned and grateful for the simple pleasures of being able to move about my own home unhindered, with such simple things as laundry access and a bathroom sink that doesn’t leak into the floor. For perspective on just what these small things mean to a disabled woman in poverty, see my posts at Super Babymama here and here.

I rarely blog about strictly political issues, although I will talk a lot about the intersectionality of disability, poverty, class, race, and gender. You’ll hear a lot about my kids: Wayward Eldest Daughter Kat, and Skeptical Youngest Daughter Ashanti. And a little about my cat.

Oh, and I cuss. A lot.

I’ve read your blog before, specifically, I read your thoughts on the food stamp challenge. Good blog.

I think most bloggers have destroyed at least one blog. I’ve been blogging off and on for five years and my first few blogs were deleted in a fit of rage. I kind of think you have to do that once or twice before you can be considered a real blogger ;)

YES! I was so sad when you stopped blogging for a bit there. I’m very glad you’re here. Giving voice to what it’s like to go through life in the lower classes is so important right now, when even most liberals don’t really realize what it entails. I’m looking forward to seeing you post around here :)
