Shameless self-promotion Sunday

Sorry about the lateness, since it isn’t even really Sunday anymore, but my internet’s been more out than not for a couple of weeks, and my TV picture has been breaking up.

Imaginary pet blogging. Since I don’t have a pet of my own, you all can read about the fabulous rock star, telenovela actress Ruby the hamster.

And lots of trashy sex stuff at my other blog- Don’t touch the pink stuff!

This isn’t self promotion per se, but it’s a request for help, as well as a comment on the state of US Healthcare.

A young woman named Erin has recently been diagnosed with a couple of debilitating neurological disorders (Chiari malformation and cranial lesions). She needs surgery, like, the day before yesterday but she has no insurance (can’t work because of the condition) and doesn’t qualify for Medicare in the state of Oregan because she isn’t pregnant and has no kids (a topic for a whole post altogether).

To raise funds she’s been working with a website called MegaUpload, which agreed to give her $10,000 if there are 5 million downloads of a virus-free text file. Simple arithmetic shows how daunting this is, but somehow the meme spread and a community of complete strangers has popped up, downloading daily and offering support. We’ve downloaded over 150,000 times since the end of September.

She has been dealing with pain and seizures for about a year, and this week she lost about a year’s worth of memory. Now she can’t remember her diagnosis OR Project Download, and is struggling to make sense of things. People from the community (many of whom have never even met her) are trying to step up fund-raising efforts, which is delicate because Erin does not wish to ask strangers for money, or contact the media.

But while that comes together, she still needs downloads and we’re trying to spread the word. The effort required is miniscule, you don’t lose any money, and Erin really needs the help.

i did a rant about stupid surveys on myspace and how they do nothing but promote bullshit gender roles

and in light of bill donahue’s war on The Golden Compass i ask why it’s ok to sell christianity to children through books and movies, but as soon as someone uses the same methods to promote something else, it’s evil?

    Some news via Womenstake.org:

The University of Colorado agreed to pay $2.5 million in a major sexual harassment suit involving two students who sued under Title IX, charging that they were raped at a football recruiting party.

    Miss Conduct,
    Your reader asks,

Frequently I’ve seen overweight and obese people insist on squeezing themselves into subway and bus seats that are too small for them. This results in their arms and legs landing on top of the people sitting on either side of them. This is very uncomfortable for the riders being squished, who often just get up out of their seat because it’s too awkward to say anything to the person with the weight issue. Nobody seems to know how to handle this. What do you suggest?

It’s simple: Urge the MTA to make the subway benches flat, no curves for individual seats. (For non-New Yorkers reading this: the MTA is the transit authority in charge of subways). Flat benches provide more room for everyone and make dealing with a variety of large and small butts easier.

That, or don’t do anything political and just deal with it. Part of living in the greatest city on Earth is dealing with random strangers. Just deal with it. If you don’t want to have to sit next to fat people on the subway, either stand up or don’t ride the subway.

I was on the subway the other night with my husband. Two seats opened up and I asked him if he wanted to sit. He said yes, but after I sat down, he refused to sit down. I (wrongly) assumed he didn’t want to sit because it meant sitting next to a man. I was irritated at him for what I thought was sexist/racist and rude behavior. He was very hurt by my assumption and explained that he didn’t want to sit because he thought he was too fat for the seat and would make others uncomfortable. The poor guy had self-inflicted fat-shaming that from the outside (because he’s not all that large and because he’s white and wealthy) looked more like traditional sexism/racism.

Many people who ride the subway know some people won’t sit next to black or brown people. And many men prefer sitting between two women than two men. Even worse, many people don’t take the subway (or trains or busses) because they simply can’t stand being so close to so many diverse people. There are so many bad reasons people won’t sit next to each other on the subways (or busses) that we shouldn’t worry so much about large people taking up more room than the small people.

I’m larger than many (I hesitate to call myself fat because many who identify as fat wouldn’t consider me fat. Only some skinnies would call me fat.) I’m overweight and tall (5’10″), but by no means am I abnormal. I’m actually VERY normal. I’m the same dress size as the average American woman (14).

I know my long arms and big feet can make other people uncomfortable, but I’m not going to apologize for it and I’m not going to stay standing on the subway just so other people don’t have to deal with me. If I want to sit and there’s a seat, I’m sitting, damn it. Standing is one of the absolute worst things on your body. It’s much better to walk or sit than to stand. I pay the same price for my subway fare that everyone else does, so why should I be denied a seat just because my ass is a little bigger?

And I’m not saying that just because I’m a “normal” size even though it sure sounds like that’s what I’m saying. I’m saying that we all deserve a seat regardless of our size. I mention my size because it’s statistically normal, yet marked in the stores as “plus.” My point is that some of this fat prejudice is based on ignorance and delusion about reality. The best way to ensure that everyone is treated fairly is to make the seats accommodate all sizes. When the seats’ curve prescribe one ‘normal, average’ size that doesn’t even reflect the reality of what is normal and average, we’ve got a social problem. Flat seats don’t prescribe anything. They are just there, ready and waiting for butts to sit on them.

This is from a little while back, but folks might enjoy this paper I wrote for school (and then posted). It’s about how capitalism and colonialism created climate change, and what I think need to happen in order for us to overcome it.

A post on the impact of heteronormative stereotypes on the defences of “consent” and of “mistaken belief in consent” in sexual assault cases.

I’ve also posted a call for volunteers for a research project on radical feminism, as well as a call for action with respect to the 20th anniversary of the decriminalization of abortion in Canada, on January 28th, 2008.

    Jill,

Shall we now have a discussion about how calling someone “classy” is offensive?

The slur assumes women should always be polite and proper and know their place or else they’re not high class. And well, besides out fertility, beauty, and youth, all we have is our class. So we best maintain that, lest we be deemed sluts, whores, bitches, prudes, or shrill nags.

You can think I’m being a shrill nag when I criticize Jessica’s participation in animal slavery. You can think I have poor etiquette skills. But I’m not harassing anyone. I’m not breaking your comment policy rules. I’m not being offensive. I’m just bringing up a topic you don’t think is relevent.

Banning me doesn’t make buying a dog from a breeder the right thing to do. Banning me doesn’t prove Jessica doesn’t deserve my criticism. And attacking me with comments like “classy” is pretty fucked up. Which is obvious, since you eat meat.

Go ahead and ignore the connection between animal oppression and human oppression. But that doesn’t make it go away.
