Tuesday Travel Blogging – Munich

in Vanity

I’ve spent this past weekend studying and I have three finals in a row starting today, so this edition of TTB is celebrating two weekends ago, before exam stress kicked in. I was in Prague and Munich, both of which were beautiful, but today it’s going to be all about Munich. I wish that pictures could capture the smells and tastes of Germany during Christmas — there are few things more satisfying than gluhwein (warm spiced rummy wine), fried mushrooms with garlic sauce, and soft chocolate-covered bananas, all served outdoors at the Christmas market around the city hall. And weisswurst. Mmmm weisswurst. Munich had all of those — plus beer. Lots and lots of beer. Dark beer, finally, and weissbier. Beer in the morning, in fact, with weisswurst. I was pretty much intoxicated for 48 hours straight, and I think I gained 10 pounds just in beer weight over two days (and it was very worth it, even if it does necessitate buying some new jeans, stat). So excuse the pictures if they’re slightly blurry. The full set of Munich shots is here, and there are more below the fold.

I hate you.

That is all.

If it makes you feel any better, I think I just failed one of my exams.

…hate me less now?

Rathaus at night is just breathtaking.

Envy, but no hating here :)

I’m so envious. I’ve got to get to Germany. Right after Ireland. And then there’s all of Asia and Africa and South America and the Pacific Islands and I haven’t done all of North America yet and… (she goes on and on and on and on!)

Though Germany is quite lovely, I have to say: Jill, your hair is such a pretty colour! And so shiny!

(I recently went brunette, and am still testing for the perfect shade, so I am constantly sizing up everyone else’s pretty hair. Sorry.)

Did you by chance go to a dance club in either city?

Well, that would require me genuinely hating you to begin with. =)

Really sorry to hear about the exam, though. Good luck with it all.

I’m not really a weisswurst fan, but there are so many other kinds of wurst I do like, that it’s really not a big deal.

I’ll lend u an ü for an all german Glühwein and an ß for the proper Weißwurst (even though I don’t like the latter at all) :)

I love you and I hate you. X(

I never knew how to type the ess-tset.

I think I’m seriously in love with Munich — totally into the old architecture and the cobbled streets (although I’m assuming that the *entire* city is not cobbled. :( )

That night picture should be your Christmas/Whatever cards for next year. WOW.

Sorry to hear about the final. I SO do not envy law students!!

These are amazing. Thanks so much for posting them. I spent my formative years in Munich, and I can’t tell you how underwhelming American Christmas was after the Christmas market.

I lived in Munich as a kid and seeing pictures like this really bring back my memories of collecting Christmas ornaments at Marienplatz.I really want to go back there for a study abroad sometime…you know, when I’m old enough to appreciate the beer. I even had to drink the “kinder punch” instead of the gluhwein.

I think the market is called Kriskindlmarkt, but I can’t remember.

Looks like you had fun!
