I wrote about this on Saturday, but today is the 20th anniversary of Canada’s biggest abortion-related Supreme Court case. For a super-comprehensive and fully informative take on Canada’s reproductive rights issues, I direct you to mattbastard. (Really, go — his post is awesome, and you will learn a lot).
Congrats, Canada, and here’s to 20 more years of progress.

Thanks so much for the link, Jill. I heartily recommend that everyone check out the other Choice Day bloggers who I linked to, like April Reign, Antonia Zerbisias, fern hill, dBO, The Regina Mom, skdadl, etc etc etc (I’m probably testing the boundaries of your spam filter with all teh links. Go. Clicky. Etc. ;)).
I’ve learned a lot from them–and everyone else who I linked (including yourself).
Show them all sum love, y’all.
Greetings from Canada!
It is indeed the 20th anniversary of lawlessness in Canada. I blog at Birth Pangs, which is a sassy, take-no-prisoners kind of place when it comes to women’s right to choose.
Here is my blogpost about our 20 years: http://breadnroses.ca/birthpangs/?p=368
And of course, a blogpost about our US sisters’ 35 years, here: http://breadnroses.ca/birthpangs/?p=356
Did I mention how we love US popular culture and how it really inspires delightful satirical blogs about choice.
Here are two of my personal best:
Feta Rights Denounced by Miss Emily Litella: http://breadnroses.ca/birthpangs/?p=95
The Incarnating Game: http://breadnroses.ca/birthpangs/?p=55
Thanks for the praise, Jill! I only hope that our current fuck-rod of a PM never gets a majority, because I firmly believe that if that happens the moderate mask he wears is going to disappear, and he’ll go after abortion rights (among other things) in a big-ass way.
Legalize freedom again!
Vote Dr. Ron Paul for President!
So I know this is a drive-by and you’ll never ever be back, but you do realize that Ron Paul is against legal abortion, right?
thanks so much for the link Jill.
I just love this passage:
“State interference with bodily integrity and serious state-imposed psychological stress, at least in the criminal law context, constitutes a breach of security of the person. Section 251 (the old abortion law) clearly interferes with a woman’s physical and bodily integrity. Forcing a woman, by threat of criminal sanction, to carry a fetus to term unless she meets certain criteria unrelated to her own priorities and aspirations, is a profound interference with a woman’s body and thus an infringement of security of the person.”
that’s worth framing and hanging on the wall. too bad Canada has its own share of right-wing wackos.
p.s. f#ck ron paul!
Ron Paul’s a crazy.
*takes deep, deep DEEP breaths*
When a few of my friends started raving about how Ron Paul was going to deliver us from the government or whatever, I went to look him up on OnTheIssues.org. Honestly, all I needed to do was stop at the first part. Where he will reverse Roe V Wade cause it’s “unconstitutional.” That is *all* i need to know about him.
He was an OBGYN, and believes life begins at conception. And you need to SAVE TEH BABIES.
Fucking idiot. Not even the republicans take him seriously. *rolls eyes*
I firmly believe that if that happens the moderate mask he wears is going to disappear, and he’ll go after abortion rights (among other things) in a big-ass way.
Nah, he’s too politically savvy for that. He knows that the majority of Canadians support the status quo on abortion and health care, and that if he messes with those things, his first majority will be his last. I really think he’ll stay moderate, because if he ever wants to be re-elected, he has no choice.
