I guess it could be read as healthy--plastic surgery and beauty obsession won't net you a man--but it's also selling exercise in the pursuit of that same physical perfection. I don't know. We don't usually see the statue that way, but it's not hard to find photos from that angle. So that's another bit of visual snark, right there - of course, when the David first came out the town elders of Florence put the unveiling on hold until they could get a metal skirt made for him. Anyone who's insulted at the idea of nuns liking the look of a handsome man.... has never met an actual nun.
