I want to love Sex & the City only because the anti-feminists hate it so much.

Love or hate the show on it's own merits. I never cared for Sarah Jessica Parker as an actress. I avoided the show. The movie's open week box office was staggering. S&TC tapped into something.

This may sound strange, but I think Battlestar Galactica. Name another show on television with a woman president (Mary McDonnell) and female lead (Katee Sackhoff) that is the show's action hero?

Someone tell me ASAP, because I need to know what to wear and who to fuck tomorrow.

Love, love, love it!

But S&TC, not so much. The women seem totally hung up on placing their own self worth entirely in a relationship, be it Charlotte's image of a perfect marriage, Samantha's need to be attractive (objectified) by men, and Carrie's madly pathetic, self-loathing, obsession with "Big". Miranda escapes scrutiny, but is also the least glammed of them all. Why is that?

Not to mention...it's completely materialistic and promotes harmful stereotypes against overweight women by having four svelte leads.

I don't think it's just "anti-feminist" conservatives who object to the ethics of Sex and the City (not that you said they are, but I just want to clarify). A lot of smart people object to it because when it gets tagged with the "feminist" label, it in fact it trivializes the important scope and past successes of feminism. If feminism really = celebrating (note I'm not saying freedom to engage in - that's clearly another issue, but rather positively affirming) promiscuous behavior on the part of men OR women, it's not a good thing and I wouldn't be a feminist. There is nothing "liberating" about becoming a slave to your own animal passions.

I think what you need is some variation on Clark Kent diving into a phone booth to become Superman.

Okay, that got a laugh out of me. It's a great visual. Jill goes into the phone booth in a cocktail dress and heels, and comes out in overalls with a fist-and-woman-symbol on the front.

Are feminists hairy, ugly man-hating sex-averse lesbians in combat books and flannel shirts, or are we self-indulgent Manolo-wearing single urban man-eating over-sexed females?

Simple. Once one hits 40, teh Angry Hormone magically kicks in and one becomes Type A. This phenomenon also accounts for sudden influxes of Manolos at consignment shops coupled with sporadic panic buys at army surplus stores.

Hope this helps in the wardrobe/sex buddy department.

"Someone tell me ASAP, because I need to know what to wear and who to fuck tomorrow....Maybe you could, I don’t know…flip a coin, or alternate quarterly or something?"

Why flip a coin. Just do both! Quarterly, daily, whatever.

I enjoyed S&TC as a kind of guilty pleasure. I felt compelled to watch it for the first two seasons, if only because I've handed SJP a permanent karmatic Get-Out-Of-Jail card for Square Pegs (confession: I wanted to be Johnny Slash). But the show eventually wound up the kind of fuzzy-wuzzy feminist-lite pabulum that you couldn't get out from under in the late 90's pop-culture.

I kept having these fantasies where the show would have some sort of interruption where someone like Susie Bright would butt in at the table while the main characters were gossiping over their usual Cosmopolitans & say something Dr. Evil-ish: "Carrie, you are the Margarine of feminism. Clear? You are the Diet Coke of feminism: just one calorie. Not feminist enough! And you" she says, turning to Samantha "are with me" she says, before grabbing her arm & towing her out the door.

Someone tell me ASAP, because I need to know what to wear and who to fuck tomorrow.

Now that made me laugh out loud at 3am. Much thanks Jill.
