I was kind of all over the map this week, from personal and disgusted to race stuff to cheating on memes to a Hope Steffey case update to letting folks know that according to my six year old, all my friends online are stupidheads.

This is somewhat out of date already, but if any of y’all are in Tallahassee or surrounding parts of North FL, do be aware that they are trying to build an incinerator here. Of particular concern is the history of siting incinerators in poor communities of color.

The International Campaign Against Honour Killings is asking everyone to remember Du’a Khalil Aswad on April 7th, the first anniversary of her death. Du’a was stoned to death in public because she had formed a relationship which was not approved by her family. The perpetrators, who numbered in the hundreds, filmed her death on cell phones and the footage was made public on the internet.

I outlined my theory on what led Jarrod Hankins to leave Adriana Torres-Flores in her cell for four days. (Then, when it was announced that he’s keeping his job, I gave him some advice.)

I was more feminist than usual this week with comments about Prager’s feminism ruined women’s lives and on the Haddock post about women and depression on Alternet but one thing I posted about because I didn’t see a lot about it was the attacks on TLCs new show in which Stay at Home Mom’s try out a job for size – needless to say, many SAHMs went Phyllis Schafly on steroids on the TLC message boards.

I wrote about public lynchings.

8 Incertus 3.16.2008 at 3:51 pm

I wrote a piece dealing with prostitution and with Nicholas Kristof’s editorials this week. Also a suggestion that concerns laws meant to curb sex tourism.

I asked the question: Did media gender bias work against Clinton in the Iowa caucus? Answer here.

Hey–the GOP? Remember them? I wrote a post on the problems with fighting within each other rather than with McCain (which is not to say that I don’t think people don’t have a right to fight with whomever they wish–just that while some liberals are mudslinging at each other, will they please aim some ammunition at the GOP, too?)

A post for Abortion Providers Appreciation Day

I wrote a book review on Persepolis, a graphic novel which you should all absolutely check out :)

16 XtinaS 3.16.2008 at 5:08 pm

Had an encounter with a harasser, what fun.

17 Fibrofog 3.16.2008 at 5:22 pm

I wrote a short post about the progress of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as it gets ready to celebrate its one year anniversary.

I just got off the phone with my wife’s friend, a 40 something single childless accomplished neurologist, who complained to me that all she wants to be at this point in her life is a “housewife”. That’s what I call pro-choice.

In Women Scientists?!??!! No way, they have cooties I wrote about Vox Day’s now ill-famous rant about how women are ruining, just ruining, universities in general and science in particular, just by their presence there. What I’d love your comments on in the feedback section is the one poster who basically questioned “why do you waste your mind worrying about this stuff?” Well wominz, why do we waste our “beautiful mind”s (thank you Babs Bush) worrying about this stuff?

20 Brooklynite 3.16.2008 at 6:13 pm

I wrote about Gerry Ferraro and the teen STI study, but the big weird post was about a psychologist’s big weird suggestion for how to talk to your kids about the Spitzer scandal.

Some women, she says, “feel that when they have an intimate experience with someone they need to get paid for it.” That’s what prostitution is all about.

Yup.

In praise of erectile dysfunction, or at least, in praise of male genital frailty. It ought to be my last post on penises for the month. Loading my blog may be difficult as Lauren is doing a spiff-up.

22 Holly 3.16.2008 at 6:35 pm

I just got mugged, which is worth mentioning but I don’t think I’m going to blog about it — it was unpleasant, but kind of non-descript. And mostly involved me sprinting half a block after the guy before tripping and skinning the hell out of my knees, followed by two hours of police bureaucracy, which was a lovely real-life demonstration of how racial profiling tends to work. (And totally not work.)

23 zuzu 3.16.2008 at 6:56 pm

Yikes, Holly. Are you okay? Do you have to worry that the guy has your ID?

24 Holly P. 3.16.2008 at 7:16 pm

A genderless society fantasy: Life in Heworld.

25 Holly 3.16.2008 at 7:33 pm

Nope, he only got my PSP, my bag fell on the ground and he was more intent in getting away from me than getting all my stuff, because I would have whupped the hell out of him if I caught him. There were a bunch of people around too, it was like a purse-snatcher kind of incident, really.

I started a photo-project for women called Feminosa. It’s a tapestry of beautiful, normal, diverse bodies…I think that the best way to accept our bodies for what they are is to get comfortable showing them off, and it’s also really positive to see normal bodies shown in a sexy way. So far we’re in the very early stages, but anyone who would like to submit a photo (or LOTS of photos) is seriously welcome.

Go to http://www.feminosa.com, and be patient with the content warning…it’s a bitch and I don’t know why.

Also, anyone who has web design experience and wants to help me make the site cooler is a GODDESS and I would LOVE any help.

My most recent post is on inflation rates, oil prices, and sustainability. Remember, you can’t have sustainability without feminism.

I haven’t been too serious in my blogging (sorry), but I have to share this. It must be the weirdest evangelical-type thing I have ever seen–and I had to own it. And blog about it. If you are sick and twisted and irreverent, like me, you’ll probably find it really funny.

35 Tobes 3.17.2008 at 11:10 am

Did anyone see Tracy Morgan on SNL responding to Tina Fey’s “Bitch is the new black” appearance?

I did. And I didn’t appreciate Morgan’s responde.

Halloooo!

I created a new blog to highlight my jewelry design and to feature artisans from around the globe! I hope to start the features in the next month as soon as I’ve had a chance to interview the selected artisans. :)

You can find my Blue Sky Design shop on Etsy or you can find stuff about me (and cupcakes & Radiohead!) on my blog, Ranting & Raving!

I got pissed at Guinness’s Proposition 3-17 ad campaign,
blurb briefly about what I’d like to see amongst my school requirements, Sally Kern and link to a slideshow I made recently for an event about language and stereotypes,
and <a href=”http://needsinspiration.blogspot.com/2008/02/presedential-pick-me-up-part-1.html”take comfort in the fact that the following fringe candidates will totally not be the next President.

GT 2008-03-10: Rapists on patrol (#2) in which David Alex Park, stalker and rapist, is acquitted on all charges, by a jury of eleven men and one woman. Not because he is anything other than a stalker and a rapist—which he as much as admitted in open court, and which was proven well enough anyway by phone records, license plate requests, and DNA evidence–but rather because he is a cop, and the woman that he harassed and sexually extorted danced at a strip club.

Coming in late here…
Did you think liberated Sweden was free of the eww sex is gross and yucky so save it for marriage-crowd? Think again. This guy is like 30 and he think that there should be no sex ed in school whatsoever. One of his brilliant arguments is that sex ed teachers must be perverts, cause how else could they stand talking about teh sex all day long. He also thinks that the pleasure we get from sex is the lowest form of human feeling. Not suprisingly, he also has some lovely thoughts about gays.

I’ve also written about whether neo-nazis should be charged using the terrorism law, and about how sex workers in Sweden aren’t allowed to take part in the conversation about themselves.

I know it’s a little past due, but I wrote about my changed views on reproductive/choice rights on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. A long journey, but a rewarding one.
