Yay for Pride in NY! Anyone else get caught in the rain?
Between Sunday brunching, gay pride parade-ing, and bar studying, I’m getting this up a little late. Apologies. As always, feel free to continue shamelessly self-promoting here throughout the week. The rules: In the comments, post something you wrote recently, with a link and a short description. Make it specific — not a link to your entire blog.

Pixar still doesn’t get it.
I Wrote policing The Muff about the push for the hairless female. I also wrote Mayonnaise and Men Kissing are a no no about Heinz pulling a commercial with two men kissing.
I’ve tackled rape culture a bit given recent goings-on in my community:
Vlogging Feminism: The Garneau Rapist and Victim Blaming
Acknowledging my own privilege and sexism when it comes to rape culture:
When Walking Women Home is Problematic
That eCard is priceless.
For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been busy adjusting to a new job, so my output hasn’t been great, but here goes:
Why do women go on 4chan?, a reflection on body image and the patriarchy, a webcomic review of a new teen oriented comic called Menage a 3, an ode to downtown Toronto, my summer plans, and a short rundown of “choice” in gaming
In Part Of The Problem, I wrote about how it’s no more acceptable for “plus-size” women to ridicule thin women’s bodies than vice versa – an old topic that recently struck a chord.
I wrote a post called Entertainment and ‘choice’
I wrote a response to a recent NYT article about how graduates of elite colleges are apparently going straight to high-paying, corporate jobs, instead of going into any public service.
Thinking Hard on the Future contains my take on Fox News’ coverage of the Clinton/Obama Unity thing and where I see the country headed.
This week, I wrote about torture.
Many times.
GT 2008-06-23 (trigger warning), in which a grand jury declares that the Stark Count Ohio Sheriff’s Office did nothing wrong when a gang of several male and female deputies held Hope Steffey down in a jail cell, forcibly removed her clothes over her screams of protest while wrenching her arms behind her back, and then left her completely naked in a freezing jail cell in public view for six hours. (Cf. also GT 2008-02-05: the original story (trigger warning) and follow-ups on the case, including five more women who came forward with complaints about the use of retaliatory, humiliating, unnecessary strip-searches in the Stark County jail.) Steffey is pursuing a lawsuit in federal court.
GT 2008-06-26: State ownership of the means of reproduction (#2) in which I comment on the AMA’s recently adopted resolution calling for “model legislation” to prohibit women from choosing a midwife-assisted home birth.
Over the past week or so, I wrtote about the illogic underlying feminist transphobia, the nature of “female privilege”, and why it’s not a feminist issue, and I also had a go at my own version of the “how men can d better in feminist spaces” genre, after feeling slightly disappointed by The F-Word’s recent post (after all, I can’t criticise unless I’m willing to try it myself). Comments on all would be welcome, but especially advice on how to improve the last one.
On a more fun note, I made a video for “Half-Nekkid Thursday” this week, which combined HNT with my love of music. I guess it’s NSFW, and also, I’m somewhat tubby, so you have been warned!
I wrote about culturally induced eating disorders and ‘traditional’ gender roles: http://lydiasbooks.wordpress.com/
holding jamaica accountable for anti-queer violence

I wrote about the oh-so-unnecessary girls-only shopping camp to which parents in the great state of Kentucky can send their young women shoppers so that they may learn:
* public speaking (how to tell what clothes they like and why)
* how to find reference material (in Barnes & Noble (what, no libraries in Kentucky))
* that not everyone can be a cheerleader, so why not be a SHOPPER?
I tried to link DIY Ideals with the mission of Free School and liberation education – http://freeschooling.org/2008/06/30/diy-ideals-and-free-schooling/
I explained why you really, really need to tip your waitstaff, no matter what Mr. Pink says, and reflected on Neil Entwistle’s conviction for murdering his wife and daughter.
I love the card. I’d like it on a t-shirt.
Here’s my rather lengthy but brilliant post on drug laws, prisons, race and women:
hah. I can’t believe I said that!
I made it through three years of blogging !
I hope everyone will heed this important feminist call to action. Here’s my contribution.
Also, not sure if I posted it on the last thread (I don’t think I did), but the 5th Feminist Carnival of Sexual Freedom and Autonomy is up at my place.
A few other posts:
* “Write the book that scares you”
* Gendered insults are not okay, no matter who the woman in question is
* Some thoughts on being a bitch
I’ve been celebreating Wimbledon and writing about women in tennis.
I have set up the MORAG project – that’s Medical and Obstetric Rape Awareness Group – to raise awareness of the violation that some women experience during childbirth or a gynae procedure, at the hands of medical staff. I am also encouraging women who have experienced this to write in with their stories, which I will put up on the site to share with other women. Thanks, Debs xx
Oh, and also, the weird stuff people have been searching for when they found my blog.
I can’t wait to have a minute (or 60) to follow all the link of what people have been writing about this week, but I have been hard at work on non-profit budgeting (jealous, much????)
I did manage to fit in one post this week on my new girl crush and mixing fun and philanthropy (or not) at a bar event. Would LOVE comments on people’s experiences at social fundraisers.
I commented briefly on Pixar’s excellent use of niche marketing to get ’80s men like myself to want to see WALL-E, and at more length on how good Stranger Than Fiction turned out to be, considering I’ve never had much love for Will Farrel.
Not a whole lot last week, just another Photo Essay and Friday Random Ten, but today I tackled the issue of guitar tab sites and why the MPA is fighting the wrong battle.
I gave a talk at my church yesterday. It was called “Honouring Canadian Women”, and the text of it is here:
http://ms-interpret.livejournal.com/380398.html#cutid1
I changed a few things on the fly, but that’s the gist. It went over quite well. People told me stories of their own work in feminism, including a 90 year old man who told me that when he was the president of the golf club near me, he got the rules changed to require gender equity (i.e. women didn’t need to be sponsored by men to join, and could hold any position on the club council).
I wrote about how nobody cares if I blog or not, and how I’m fine with that, because blogging shouldn’t be a chore.
Oh, and I also wrote about zombie movies and how important they are.
I expressed my disappointment over Obama’s campaign, wrote about how the 1858 Lincoln/Douglas Senate debates closely mirror some arguments surrounding gay marriage, and the difference between unwanted and unplanned pregnancies.
I know this is late but it only happened yesterday… :)
Dr. Mortgentaler (abortion dr and activist in Canada) received the Order of Canada award!
As Rad Creek did above, we also posted about Hope Steffey.
