Over the course of this past week, I’ve pointed out that the right to privacy comes from the Judeo-Christian tradition (or at least the Judeo part thereof), talked about <a href=”talked about “left-wing Puritanism” — twice — “>”left-wing Puritanism”twice — in response to posts at this here blog, and note the latest conservative talking-point — <a href=”talked about “left-wing Puritanism” — twice — “>that Obama wags his finger.

Maybe I should have spent more time working last week and less time blogging? Oh well, it was my birthday last Monday — that’s my excuse!

This week we had a phenomenal guest-blogger writing for us about the salon industry, and how gender/fashion policing turned an art she loved into a nightmare.

We’re also discussing whether or not special police squads trained to investigate cases of rape and sexual assault could help victims feel more comfortable reporting, and if they might increase conviction rates as well.

GT 2008-07-01: Because your crystal ball ain’t so crystal clear…, in which a recently-discussed 1944 OSS manual for training agents in techniques of sabotage proves eerily reminiscent of conversations with anti-feminist trolls.

GT 2008-06-30: Law and Orders #8 (trigger warning: includes video from local news stories which include graphic video of extreme physical violence by a male police officer against a woman under his custody). Memphis cop Bridges McRae, after arresting Duanna Johnson, a black trans woman, on prostitution charges, proceeded to put her in a holding area in the county jail, ordered her to come over to be fingerprinted, shouting homophobic and transphobic slurs at her in the process, and then, when she refused to respond to that kind of language, went over and began punching her repeatedly in the face while another cop, James Swain held her down in her chair. McRae then pepper-sprayed Johnson, handcuffed her, and left her laying on the floor, handcuffed, for several minutes while a nurse at the jail made sure that he was OK. McRae then went on to charge her with assault. The whole thing was caught on the jail’s surveillance video, and all charges against Johnson were dropped after the video was brought to the attention of the chief of police. McRae was placed on paid vacation for months; he was finally fired several days after the surveillance video was leaked to the news media.

The Miss Black USA Pageant just passed and I posted about the fact that I believe that WOC cannot find validation by performing gender in these competitions. It does not validate us in anyway to submit to the same sort of sexism that devalues other women.
A World Without feminism is my attempt to remind us of what women lived with before feminism became a movement for gender equality.
Finally Ain’t I A Woman is about how Sojourner Truths famous speech continues to be relevant to WOC.

Everyone remember that dude who changed his name to Pro-Life? (I don’t have the luxury of forgetting – he’s from my state). He was recently the subject of a newspaper profile, and wow, what a doosey.

It was a bit silly this week again over at Hootchi Cootchi- between the big penises and big balls (I don’t even know), the naked barbie art, those genital mutilation ads and phone sex we discussed the Jezebel commenter’s take on the “Is it normal for a straight girl to only like girl on girl porn?” post.

I resorted to a cute cat picture, something I only do when the news is really, really depressing (or the cat is really, really cute):

    http://varkentine.blogspot.com/2008/07/makes-you-wonder-whats-really-worth.html

And linked to an NPR interview with Andrew Stanton, who is the co-writer, director and/or producer of many Pixar films including WALL-E. He talks about one or two of the issues that have come up in recent discussions here about Pixar.

    http://varkentine.blogspot.com/2008/07/andrew-stanton-co-wrote-toy-story.html

You may or may not agree, but at least you’ll be informed.

Lastly, I found it curious that ’80s sex symbol (yes, I admit I had her poster–so did most men my age) Heather Thomas can still attract the press…and moreso that she’s written a book.

I didn’t take that last part well, but that’s just jealousy.

I finally just finished my post on being a queer survivor of abuse.
That is: speaking honestly and openly and fearlessly about the connections (and my reality of a pretty controversial causal connection) between my history of abuse and my identity as a queer woman…all while maintaining my legitimacy and authenticity as both a survivor and a queer woman. Also, how our pretty restrictive communities & community-enforced standards of authenticity can be expanded (through dialogue) to actually include the messy realities of women like me.

I have blogged this week about a new reality show in Canada called: “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” They are using this show as a vehicle to cast the role of Maria. These posts started because they keep referring to these women as girls and it is making me mental. I had been posting on a facebook discussion where I was basically called a feminazi – not by men but all of this has been by other women. Here are the three posts:

Recently at The Hand Mirror we’ve blogged about breastfeeding, being seen as baby machines>/a>, and the difficulties of finding a balance in regard to childcare.

In the last week we’ve been rather focused on the revelation that a well known NZ sports broadcaster, prominent on telly and radio here, beat his former partner so badly that she was very seriously injured. Rather than handing himself into police he hosted a press conference to give his public apology which included the phrase “no excuses (pause) except to say…” So there are quite a few posts about that too.

My main focus this week was on Pfc. LaVena Johnson and the fight to have her “suicide” investigated. Pfc. Johnson was beaten and mutilated, most likely by a comrade, while serving overseas in Iraq. She was nineteen years old. The army deemed her death a suicide, and her family is now trying to get the case reopened so that they can see justice done for their daughter. The point: Let’s get serious about a) hate crimes against women, b) supporting our armed services.

Contact your senators and congress persons on the Armed Services Committee and tell them to order the army to reopen the case. Link provided for contact info for the Armed Services Committee.

Mmm, shameless self-promotion is the only thing keeping me going these days.

In the last week, I’ve wondered about the emergence of a “torture chic” among the right-wing, and noted that Democrats actually do quite well with the white working class. And my wonderful co-blogger, takahe83, did her part to further the homosexual agenda. Enjoy!

*peeks around corner* Hello. I wrote about the Kyle Payne situation, which, while not full of incredibly new and original content, just more outrage, also has a video I found of Andrea Gibson performing her poem “Blue Blanket.” (post here: http://blog-of-cool.livejournal.com/35651.html) Earlier in the week, I did a comparison of Kate Perry’s new hit song “I Kissed a Girl” & Jill Sobule’s earlier song of the same name. (post here: http://blog-of-cool.livejournal.com/33978.html) There are also a few posts musing on theology, at least one of them specific to unitarian universalism.

    Peace,
    Maggie

I mock the delicate sensibilities of those who want to compel women to put a bag on their mammalhood:

And go on to debunk the biohazard myth:
