Bar study is apparently throwing off my game, and I forgot to put this up again on Sunday. Sorry about that — I can no longer keep track of what day it is (but I can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the rules regulating tenants’ use of open mines on a life estate).
The Sunday Self-Promotion rules for new readers: Post a link to something you’ve written (or various things you’ve written) with a short description of what it’s about. Don’t just post a link to your whole blog; give us something specific.
Self-promote away.

Got Privilege is about whether or not white should enter the debate on blacks using the word nigger. I come out in favor of intervention.
Disneys First Black Princess is about the racism Disney decided to go with when they created Maddy. We have waited so long for representation and we get a maid working for a white woman who is in love with a white man.
Finally, Fat people need an intervention is about the show Intervention choosing to show weight as something that needs an intervention without dealing with the serious issues that cause obesity or the social stigma attached to it.
Sunday, Monday–cool with me!
Anyway, last week I posted a revised article I wrote about SSRIs and their iffy connection to relieving depression and rounded out the week with a Friday Random Ten. No Photo Essay last week because I forgot to post one!
Don’t forget to bone up on 50-state spring gun law. LOLZ!
Last week I expressed my disappointment with Catwoman’s design for the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game, as well as general exasperation for the presentation of ladies in fighting games.
check out my satire advertisement I made when I was bored. I was mocking the “WHITE BEAUTY” product that’s getting popular in India
*barf*
anywayyyy, check it out!!

1. We discussed the case of one woman who, when she was 17, pleaded guilty guilty to sodomy after giving her 15-year-old boyfriend a blow-job and his parents pressed charges. Since she’s on Georgia’s sex-offender registry, she’s now having to move, since there is a church in her neighborhood, where children might congregate. This story has led to some discussion of residency restriction laws.
2. We’re arguing about whether or not Hillary Clinton would make a good Supreme Court Justice.
3. John McCain’s son belongs to a golf-club that won’t let women into its bar and grill.
1. The best thing I did these past few days was probably a long movie-meme, where you choose one movie for each year since you were born.
http://varkentine.blogspot.com/2008/07/from-diamonds-to-robots.html
Readers of this blog might be intersted (or maybe not) to note that 2006 looks to have been a good year for movies about women.
2. On the other hand, I also noted that Cameron Diaz looks much better to me as a brunette than she ever did as a blonde,
http://varkentine.blogspot.com/2008/07/why-was-cameron-diaz-ever-blonde.html
3. and posted videos I found of two young, hyper women falling all over themselves to music from The Lion King and Labyrinth.

I’ll be guest-blogging here next week—so excited! In the meantime, check out my account of my recent road trip through the United States, Mexico, and back across Canada. Also, pictures! (Not really feminism-related, but…places are still awesome.)
First i wrote about an outrageously sexist and misguided conversation i had with a coworker/substance abuse counselor about his disappointment that his wife is birthing him a girl. Then i reacted to ABC Family’s new tween show The Secret Life of an American Teenager which encouraged me to examine teen pregnancy, sex ed, and American media. Oh and a Male Rights Network troll made an appearance at both.
I moved to a new blog, and after a long-ish hiatus due to moving in real life as well, I’ve posted on When women joke about women.
You can find me here: http://jemimaaslana.wordpress.com/
Over at the California NOW blog we do a weekly Monday Action Checklist of things to take action on, and we just started a Friday Legislative Wrap-up.
I’ve also written recently about the struggle for work/life balance, the idea that the prevalence of child rape means it shouldn’t be prosecuted more harshly, and racism in the feminist community.
Open mines on a life estate? Hoping for mimes with a strife rebate? Slopin’ lines with a trifle state? Nope, sorry — just can’t do anything with that. Perhaps I’ll wait for the movie.

The heterosexual questionnaire (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
http://queersunited.blogspot.com/2008/04/heterosexual-questionnaire.html
I mused about some of the non-pregnancy-related effects that Bush’s attempt to redefine pregnancy could have.
I wrote a post on how all the money and time and effort put into the producition of porn magazines could be put to better use here: http://ashesandgemstones.blogspot.com/2008/06/waste-of-good-wood-pulp.html
and another one on how street harassment should never be explained away by that tired old phrase ‘boys will be boys’: http://ashesandgemstones.blogspot.com/2008/06/harassment-on-street.html
I interviewed Dreamboat Annie, proprietress of Fat Fancy – a plus-size vintage clothing store.
I’ve been a posting machine lately! I’ll try to keep it to the more substantial posts…
I’ve gotten some good discussion started about:
-how to wrap my head around
the sex worker/prostitution rights/sex trafficking/human trafficking debate
-the obsession with skinny brides, as prompted by Facebook calling me fat
And I’ve just posted about:
-the weirdness I now feel when I’m told I’m one of the guys, or that I’m SUCH a guy
-figuring out a new way of holding people accountable for their racist/sexist comments/actions, rather than jumping to call them racist or sexist
Today I wrote about Cat Stevens, to wish him a Happy Birthday:
http://mikeb302000.wordpress.com/2008/07/21/happy-birthday-cat-stevens/
And about Obama’s courage and integrity in visiting the war zones:
http://mikeb302000.wordpress.com/2008/07/21/barack-obama-in-afghanistan-and-iraq/
I wrote about Jenny Block’s appearance at BookPeople this weekend.
And reviewed a zine entitled I Was a Teenage Mormon.
Plus a lot about the the HHS proposal of doom.
I ponder whether or not moms can really be green considering our lack of time and all the “time-saving” yet bad for the earth products that are thrown at us.
I’ve been wondering whether trans men are any better qualified to be feminists than cis men.
Firstly, on the SSRI question, while it’s only anecdotal evidence, they made a big difference when I was on them, so even if they don’t work as advertised, and for a limited number of cases – they do work for some folks.
I didn’t blog much this week, as I explained in High Eight, Us?, which gives a list of some of the things I might have blogged about if I had been more inclined to do so, and asks for questions if people want to know what I would have said!
I did manage to write one of those pieces, which is a look at some of the ways in which Pamela Sargent’s novel “The Shore of Women” discusses different aspects of the Patriarchal structures, even though the fictional world is run by women.
I wrote a really brief introduction about the intersections of the workplace democracy movements and the learning-place democracy movements: http://blog.freeschooling.org/2008/07/21/on-the-intersections-of-workplace-democracy-and-learningplace-democracy/
I had a lot of activity on a post I did about yet another instance of a guy photographing a woman “upskirt”, posting it online w/o consent, critique follows, apologism (and “lighten up”) ensues. If anyone is as pissed off as I am and wants to work on some sort of advocacy, leave me a message in comments or email me (contact info on my blog). I have a year off, so to speak, and I’m really passionate about this issue.
I also wrote about the HHS/contraception issue
A post called
Fleshbot: where men are for ‘gays,’ lesbians are for ’straights,’ and the viewer is MALE about the erasure of the (at least hetero, but it’s not too lesbian-friendly either) female audience from their sex site.
MTV’s Shot at Love gets bisexuality all wrong
oh, and I finished my Master’s Thesis
I’m urging people to vote Litbrit best Tampa blogger for Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay awards. Litbrit used to write at Shakesville and Erza Klein’s blog. She runs an occasional post at my place. So I’m biased. The Best of the Bay questionaire asks for zip code and you must answer 25 poll questions. So this is going out to people in the Tampa area.
I have a Dark Knight review of how the movie reflects America’s post-9-11 environment. The Dark Knight raises important ethical questions about about society gives up in order to fight terrorism. And yes, the Heath Ledger performance lives up to the hype.

Over at Hootchi Cootchi we talked orgasms- clitoral vs. g-spot. Sorta.
As well as the usual; mooning art, penis leashes, Urban Dictionaries take on “hoochie koochie” and Elisabeth Hasselbecks obliviousness to the mimic of a vibrator.
I make fun of one of my favorite anti-choice nutbags, some woman who held up a sign saying “You killed the next president” at a pro-choice rally.

We’re a new online travel magazine for women with a feminist twist called Galavanting. A couple of our contributing writers are Feministe readers who saw a previous Shameless Self-Promotion Sunday post!
We’ve got some great stuff on our new worldwide blog by women travelers and expats with the cheeky title, A View from A Broad:
Hear from Jenny who took a leap and moved from her corporate cubical existence to Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Check out Paris-resident Pamela’s creperie recommendation for food & eye candy.
Also in the online magazine’s July issue, we’ve got some cool tips and essay like:
Plan the perfect trip with these tips from the Two Jetset Divas.
Learn some easy tips on staying safe while traveling alone from Leyla in our Travel Tips section.
Follow Leah on her Paris adventures after she swapped her NYC apartment for a Frenchman’s for a couple of weeks.
Support women-owned businesses when you travel by checking out Valerie’s Chicago Chocolate Tour, an awesome eco-resort built from scratch by Anitra, or Kimberley’s fabulous Paris weddings.
Note: we’re running a contest to break the ice on our newly launched blog…so leave a comment and be entered to win a prize!

When it comes to travel, we believe women are interested in more than just fashion & style columns and reviews of ludicrously expensive resorts. We know that not every female is in search of the world’s perfect facial. And that women without trust funds travel too.
About a week ago I wrote about the infuriating bulletin boards in the dorm where I’m currently staying.
I can happily report that with the help of the girls I’m living with, we have successfully engaged in some guerrila feminism and changed the bulletin boards for the better.
I blog about the sexual harassment my friend suffered at the hands of a doctor when she was sleeping in an international clinic http://saorla.blogspot.com/2008/07/sexual-harassment-at-sos.html
It’s because those pregnant illegals have magical crotches.: about that woman who was detained, gave birth under arrest, and not allowed to see her newborn baby after he was born. He developed jaundice, and her breasts got infected because they wouldn’t let her have a breast pump in jail.
Hi ho!
I wouldn’t call it Horrible, about the Joss Whedon/NPH musical.
How much will Howie get?, about criminal Lou Pearlman, of Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync and O-Town fame.
“Deconstructing Transgenderism” psssst your cis-privilege is showing
I finally got around to blogging about Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” I am curious as to how others interpret this tune.
I wrote a bitchy post about being called cutesy names by strangers. http://screaminglemur.blogspot.com/2008/07/dont-call-me-babe.html
I’m still working on my HTML tags. But my rhetoric is fairly scathing. Anyone who’s been called “sweetie” by a store clerk is welcome to come on over and share my pain.
A special Wednesday Whedon last week on actions and consequences.
The Guy joins random babble w/ Zombie Survival.
I share a little and discuss why it isn’t always OK to say “just go somewhere else” when it comes to our reproductive health.
On labels, and how they are counterproductive.
and also, Happy Blogoversary to me!
I know that is a lot of links…guess we just had a busy week!
Thinking about the difference between the Christian religion I was brought up with (even if it didn’t take, it left me with an abiding affection/respect for the character of Jesus as described in the gospels) and the Christian religion that I keep being told is being repressed and discriminated against, I wrote a post What I Like About Christianity, which is probably the only post I’ve ever written, or ever will write, where fully 50% is quotes from the Bible.
I get quite pissed off, curse a lot, and post pictures of my underwear in response to more feminist appearance bashing.
what in hell have i done to deserve all these kittens, on men who complain about repeatedly suffering pregnancy scares, but somehow none of it was ever their responsibility – just the woman’s.
I blogged about The Inheritance of Loss and internalized racism affecting job choices.
lydiasbooks.wordpress.com
A homophobic group from Arizona, the Alliance Defense Fund is attacking the North Carolina Governor’s School over a teacher’s discussions of gay rights, sex education, and generally mentioning to people under 18 that gay people exist. Tanya Olson, the instructor mentioned is an outspoken supporter of gay rights and feminism and deserves the support of the Feministe community, as does the Governor’s School itself. Attacks of this nature ought to be a national issue of interest to everybody. After all, borrowing a phrase from environmentalism, in education, everywhere is downstream.
@SnowdropExplodes, it’s great that your medication worked for you, and I know a lot of people helped get over their depression with SSRIs, but what bothers me is that some studies have shown that placebos and SSREs can do just as well. What I’m concerned about is that some people are taking a medication that can be expensive and dangerous if not used correctly when they may not necessarily have to use SSRIs specifically. More details on the blog!
