ya know, i’m pretty sure i didn’t choose to have an abortion, i decided to say my life.

but, then again, the far right believes it is better for ME to die than a poor, defensless fetus. despite the fact that said fetus can’t live if i die, anyway.

Hmm. Interesting, Hershele. I always thought that it was the opposite — because choices are seen as trivial. Like you choose a flavor of ice cream. It’s always been my impression that “choose” is a closer synonym to “pick” while “decide” is a closer synonym to “conclude.” You know, judges make decisions, not choices. I thought it played into the myth that women just made the decision to have an abortion really casually, like you choose what shirt you’re going to wear today rather than how you decide whether or not you’re going to get married. Could it be a regional thing? Or maybe even just a weird contexual thing? Again, not that it really is relevant, but now I’m curious.

As a flack, I think I can explain the semantic issue. Let me just turn around, you’ll hear me more clearly if I’m facing away from you considering where I’ll be speaking from:

Anyway, choices are bigger than decisions. Not that having a baby or not is a small thing, but “choice” suggests you’re stuck with it for all future pregnancies. Basically, you choose a side; no one wants to be on the having abortions side, even if she wants to terminate this specific pregnancy.

Not that this is at all relevant, just thought people would be interested.

I live in ultra conservative WV and let me tell you they are thiking of passing the same thing here and if they ever do I will be like you Cara out there informing people of the dangers of a law like this. I am a 25 yr old woman with many health issues one of them bipolar disorder. I am one of the women worried about not only my fellow sisters but my fellow disabled sisters if laws like this come to pass. I don’t get the people who calls up prochoicers baby killers and we are going to hell and all that. First off a threat to burn in hell doesn’t scare me I don’t believe in it being Wiccan and second is what I always say to these women and men who yell baby killer at me in the arguments I get in with them what about the woman then followed by the question how much time should she do? It is funny to see the stunned faces. I guess I will never understand them but keep up the good work Cara!

Thanks Jill. Whew. I’m signed up to volunteer with my local congressional candidate (I’m in one of those important districts where the Dems think they can pick up a seat), and when they called last week to give me options about what to do, I just said “whatever” and they said they’d get it worked out and call me again this week with the details on what they need me to do. But if I get the opportunity to voice an opinion again, I’m totally begging to canvass instead of phone bank.
