I work part time as a product demonstrator in a Big Box Warehouse Store. I am one of the legion of people not listed in the unemployment stats.

I work when they need me with out benefits. Part of this is because of out sourcing and part of it is because of ageism.

Now that Obama has won and I don’t have to fear pogroms, I turn my attention to intra-denominational fighting between Catholic priests who are offended not all Catholics are of the Roman variety, react to the reaction to the passage of Prop h8, and note some inconsistencies when Orthodox Jewry apply the ancient ideals of halacha and turn modern medicine into battery.

One more which is more important than my wonky song renditions: the Netherlands drafting a bill to force “unfit” mothers to take contraception, under threat of taking their babies from them after they’re born.

I wrote a couple of pieces about Obama’s win – on Monday, letting my cynicism speak, I wrote We won’t win in America, about how even if Barack won, his chances of bringing real change were still pretty slim. On Wednesday, after he actually won it, and buzzing with the euphoria that I saw online and on the television, and with the memory of seeing that speech live, I wrote the antidote to that post, An historic day.

I also was inspired to piece together my personal timeline – the key news events and not so newsworthy events that I remember as landmarks in my lifetime.

In other news, I took on an anti-porn analogy that I felt made not much sense at all.

Hey, did anyone else notice a huge drop in traffic after the election? We got about a fifth of our normal traffic on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday… a three-day hangover from Tuesday night parties perhaps? Anyway, we’re still around and writing about:

    1. Teen lesbians on ABC’s Family Channel!
    2. Another organization with a good purpose goes PETA, trying to promote a cause with sexy ladies. This time a Tila Tequila strip-tease for high schoolers is used to discuss the atrocities in Myanmar.
    3. Maggie writes about moms’ fears about posting cute kid photos – do you all post personal and family photos or no?
    4. One family that is posting cute kid picts is the Obama family – we posted our favorites.

I don’t actually like prostitution very much but since it sits at a huge intersection of ideas related to gender, projection, objectification, and alienation I sure wind up writing a lot about it.

This week I’ve written three posts that all sort of go together. The first two, about who benefits from keeping prostitution illegal, were inspired by something Cara wrote here.

    - A Most Ingenious Paradox: Who Benefits When Prostitution is Illegal?

    - Sharing Risks and Responsibilities

    - Prostitution and Shared Objectifiction

Ilyka’s “The Last I’ll Write on Conservatives” is pretty damned poignant. Very short excerpt:

The problem is the people who are now either in total denial about what they helped build, or worse–worse, because it’s less honest–apparently befuddled by all the frothing wingnuttery. I’m talking about you, the so-called A-listers, the ones who made a bit of money off all this. You, standing there with your mouths hanging open wondering where, oh, where did all this wingnuttery come from?

Go read it at Off Our Pedestals.

    FeministReview 11.9.2008 at 10:48 pm |

A few reviews that you shouldn’t miss out on this week:

Blood Dazzler: In a world full of tragedy, it is easy to feel removed from it, to see it as a distant echo. Patricia Smith’s collection of poems, Blood Dazzler, breaks through this apathy to bring the full weight of Hurricane Katrina’s impact front and center.

Refiguring the Ordinary : It’s easy to understand the power of your own authenticity when we’ve all long been told that we—as feminists, women, oppressed minorities—have a right to our own voices and stories, that we are the ones who can best speak our truth to power. But what if authenticity itself is merely existentialism gone wrong, subjective judgments that still have little bearing on reality? How are we to be the judges of our own pure interpretations?

Surprised by God: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Religion: Reading this, you might not be able to guess that the larger framework in which Ruttenberg is speaking is about how she learned to feel comfortable with visibly and publicly practicing her religion. But you don’t have to be religious to enjoy Ruttenberg’s thoughts and words. Her discussions about feminism, community, spirituality, identity, and family are thoughts that can inspire and attract anyone.

I posted about the New England Patriots’ dismissal of the youngest NFL cheerleader in history, and how cheerleaders are held to a much higher (and different) standard than the players. I was livid at what On Blast at Last did to this young woman’s career.

Sudy, I saw that on Post Secret too and I considered posting about it. Glad you did!

Also, Ben, I don’t think wishing violent death upon anyone is very feminist. Clearly, Sarah Palin was not the most qualified person for the job but that does not excuse death threats. At least not in my opinion.

Also, I got off of my lazy ass and made a detailed post about the complex positions of women in country music.

I’ve written about the unsealing of an arrest warrant in the case of an officer busted for sexual assault.

This is my first “love” letter.

So now [my last name] follows one of RPDs officers through the courthouse? Sits close and eavesdrops on a handshake between a prosecutor and the officer?

    Sick.

Her true intentions ring out again. She is infatuated with the thought of an officer being charged with sex crimes. “This cop abused his authority,” she screams. Just like he (that authority figure from her past) did to me!” Oops.

You might ask why. We have a hunch. Maybe she’s reliving her Army days? Yeah we know all about that. Don’t act surprised.

Sick, [my last name]. You really ought to get some help with your spirits of the past. oh and get some clean clothes and get yourself clean. Your disgusting.

It’s par for the course and I think I know who this gentleman is. What’s interesting is that the references don’t make any sense which tells me which two other individuals are involved, they being two gentlemen who have slandered me all over the neighborhood where I lived and they policed for several years.

What’s odd (or not) is that do they think writing this crap does their “friend” any good in his criminal defense. I mean, birds of a feather….
