Stitching Tentacles is a daily self-portrait project, using avant-garde art and practice to look at transgender visibility, document depression/madness, and in general how identity/ politics effect our daily lives.

This week on MMW, we cast a skeptical eye at the “culture” argument, called Raheel Raza out on her fear mongering, applauded a decent news story for once!, gave another perspective on the Third International Congress on Islamic Feminism, and examined the sexism of “The battling begums.”
Fish and Pussy How Imaginative: Looking at how ads made on spec routinely marginalize and degrade women.
Why We Need To Talk About Whiteness and Privilege: Looking at the way avoiding adding whiteness to discussions about race only exacerbates racism.

Sunday Shame: My feminism Stops here: Stop by and share the times you pulled the I’m A girl card even though you knew it wasn’t feminist and it was wrong.
I’ve got a post up about the hatred against immigrants and Latinos.
Since the Supreme Court is A-OK with religious screeds displayed on public property, they’re facing other religions who want equal time. I point out the argument against this is lame while, immaturely, invoking Brooks. Equally on the immaturity front, I had a hard time boo hooing for boys whose self esteems are bruised by seeing hot chicks who don’t appear to be dating schlubs
On a more serious note, Christians are not the only ones who demand life support for the dead.
Thank you for this opportunity! I wrote about a
Prop 8 protest in Greensboro, North Carolina.
I started a new blog because Google hit me with an “objectionable content” warning – I wrote about that here (and no, there’s no objectionable or otherwise nsfw conent).
This week we wrote about:
1. job segregation and the wage gap
2. how FGM is not at all like male circumcision
3. sex trafficking and the internet
4. the gendered labeling that happens with some professions – like ‘male nurse’
5. the ‘stay at home mom’ label
I just started a new interview series with independent artists making a living from what they love. See the first few installments here:

A big win for LRE. I blogged about a due process case where it was ruled that the Suffolk (Virginia) Public School System cannot force the parents of a 6-year-old autistic child to put their son in a special program for autistic students. This was a big win for parents in this part of Virginia — allowing this child to stay in the “least restrictive environment” as guaranteed by IDEA and supported by the parents.

Notes from the Den of Iniquity: because my spouse makes me laugh.
Logic can be fun: a post on how experience and facts trump uninformed opinion, and how stating so does NOT make me an asshole, just honest.
Live long enough to see the humor: I’m idealistic. Don’t like that? tough shit.
I react to being patronized, particularly in the case of the Gray’s Anatomy anti-queer debacle this month.

And I don’t even know what to say about this guy. You have to experience him for yourself.
Lots more at the site.
I have a post up about what the passing of Prop 8 means to me, specifically as a liberal (and queer) Californian.
And a write-up from the Prop 8 protest in Washington DC with pictures.
I wrote a bit about prop 8 as a Canadian enjoying my rights and freedoms up here. It’s still a tragedy: Massive Hate-Ons.
LAVENDER VALLEY, the internet’s most important poorly animated homo-centric soap opera, debuted its premiere episode this week:
I wrote a little about my racial/cultural identity, latina writers, and Julia Alvarez.

I linked to Virginia Madsen writing about Robert Altman:

I wrote about one way education has been used as a means of cultural genocide in the United States, in this case specifically the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.

A super angry rant in which I realize that being gay kind of sucks. Incidentally, I hadn’t noticed before.

Thoughts on the effectiveness of nonviolence
At Macha Mexico: A Lesbian Guide to Mexico City, we just published an article about responsible travel and giving back to communities you visit. Along with that, we provided a list of worthy organizations doing important work for women’s reproductive rights in Mexico.
It was inspired by this post from my guest blogging days… Check it out!
Apparently the link I posted above doesn’t work… so I’ll try again, but:
I wrote about one way education has been used as a means of cultural genocide in the United States, in this case specifically the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. http://blog.freeschooling.org/2008/11/14/cultural-genocide-and-education-the-story-of-the-carlisle-indian-industrial-school/
Myths of Male Dominance: Collected Articles on Women Cross-Culturally: The book’s basic idea is this: Dynamics of power are not in a person’s supposed inherited and expected gender roles, but based on access and ability to create a means of survival. Regrettably, this concept does not come across easily.
Isadora Duncan: A Graphic Biography: Like her dancing, Isadora Duncan was modern beyond her time. Her radical views about education, woman’s independence, marriage, and single motherhood drew the scorn of some and the admiration of others. She led an intrepid life, and rightly knew that we take nothing with us when we go.
Arts and Crafts Market – Long Beach, CA (8/30/2008): Vasquez’s Arts and Crafts Market, much like her clothing line, is a labor of love, and there’s something distinctly beautiful about a person who is willing to deal with the stress of putting together an event for no other reason than the strongly held belief that local artists should have a place where they can display and sell their art.

“…In the coming years, both the future of the Republican Party and the feminist movement lie in the hands of female conservatives. While racial barriers suffered a heavy blow, election results did much to reinforce stereotypical gender roles….”

We carry guidebooks from 100 countries and all 50 states, as well as a selection of fiction and non-fiction (both classic and contemporary) — all shelved together by place. Victoria C. Rowan has dedicated her career to cultivating and celebrating creativity. She developed her unique approach to writing/creativity/life coaching while working in all arenas of the media business–as a journalist for international publications and websites, event producer, radio commentary contributor, book editor, writing instructor and creativity coach. Having midwife-ed hundreds of projects with hundreds of clients, she has come to this conclusion: creativity can only consistently thrive when the rest of the artist’s life works and allows space for its potential. Sessions with Victoria will not only help you craft a better book, essay, play, poem, website copy or business plan, but they will also help you become the person you always wanted to be.
Thanks for the totally shameless promotional opp!
This week, I picked up on the story of a 13 year old girl who has won the right to die. Doctors treating Hannah Jones tried to take her out of her parents’ care to force her to have a (potentially life-saving) operation she did not want. I didn’t see this story come up anywhere else, but I think there’s some strong feminist (and young-ist(?)) points in the story.
I posted about the recent story about the catholic priest whotold his congregation not to take communion if they voted for Barak Obama on my blog, Into The West.
In the wake of Prop 8, I started writing a post about what marriage is to me, which turned into something of an examination of how framing succeeded and failed during the campaign.
I wrote Agreeing with Republicans about the impending GM buyout.
Enjoy!
