The inauguration is over. The swearing in ceremony, the parade, the parties, it’s all done. And now, it’s time to focus on the vital, important matters that will determine the fate of our nation. There are a lot of questions facing us at this crucial juncture, about the economy, global warming, the war in Iraq, and the future of women’s rights, just to name a few.
Most importantly of all, we have the question of how the Oceanic 6 are going to get back to the island.
That’s right folks, Lost starts back up tonight (9, EST). Season 5! And now that the inauguration is over, us Lost fans can devote our full attention and excitement to the upcoming two hour season premiere.

So, fellow Lost obsessers, what are your theories?
My big one for the season: the island wasn’t moved physically at all. It was moved in time.
I’ve had this theory for some time now, mainly because of all the wacky time travel stuff that has already happened on the show concerning Desmond, and concerning the difference in time between the island and the freighter just outside its boundaries. There’s also the crucial factor of the orientation film that Locke watched in the station shortly before Ben moved the island. The film showed that the enclosed area that covered up the island-moving mechanism was actually a device for time travel. Remember, how the bunny was supposed to disappear briefly as it moved in time? I think the island, perhaps because it’s so much larger or because it moved so much farther in time, just disappeared for much longer. Backing up my theory is the fact that the Lost producers have repeatedly emphasized in interviews that the question is not where the island is but when.

My theory: It’s Vincent. Vincent is the mastermind behind the whole thing. He always gets away unscathed no matter what. The island has major ‘Silent Hill’ vibe happening and we all know what James found behind the Observation Deck door….

I think moving the island in time may help explain what the hell has happened there since the Oceanic 6 left. They’ve been gone a long time (2-3 years, right?), that’s a long time for the rest of the survivors to have been chillin’ out on the island.
On a feminist note, maybe Jack will treat Kate with some modicum of respect this season? I’m rewatching earlier seasons right now, and I swear, I want to slap him every time he interacts with her. She’s one of the only trackers they have, one of the only people who has experience with guns, but OH NO, she’s got boobs, so he always wants to leave her out of the “dangerous” stuff.
Cara: In some of the pre-season interviews, the show runners have explicitly confirmed your hypothesis, as did Jeremy Davies’ rocket last year.
Is that Faraday? If so, his rocket only proved that time does not move at the same speed on the island as it does off the island, not that “moving the island” means “moving it in time.”
I wouldn’t count on it. Especially now that she has Aaron with her, and god knows that no man on the show is willing to take care of a kid. Except for Charlie, who is dead now.
Another tidbit that backs up your theory is that after Ben Linus “moved” the island, he reappeared in the Sahara 11 months later, but dropped out of the sky as though mere seconds had passed.
Regarding other comments and the whole Jack/Kate thing, I totally agree. At some point in season 2 or 3, Jack became a total asshole and Kate became this wilting flower and it really pissed me off the way they essentially rewrote her character during the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer love triangle.
Meanwhile, I love how Sun bought her father’s company with her settlement money. That was awesome.
Maybe the 5th season starting will make Peter want to watch seasons 2-4.

And I also want more screen time for Sayid. Mmm… Sayid. I swear he is never on the wrong side of any situation in that movie. Except perhaps for that torture thing.

He’s a white male. Don’t bet on it. Hurley’s already seeing him. We can forget about Ana Lucia, Eko, Shannon, Libby, and probably Michael and Jin too, though. Sayid better watch his back. Hurley’s the wild card. ‘Course if that happens I may just stop watching.
What gives me hope is the fact that you can literally hear the writers’ strike happening in season 4:
ROSE: “Claire, that Charlie certainly is a fine fellow. You had better put out for him when he gets back.”
CLAIRE: “Oh Rose, how lewd! You’re right though.”
Maybe it’ll get better now that that’s over.
I am currently very intrigued by this theory. Essentially it says that all the messages about “you’re not supposed to raise him” and “don’t bring him back” seem to point to Aaron, but that’s misleading. Instead, it’s referring to Locke. The link explains more, but it’s an interesting idea, especially since dead people seem to have a habit of walking around and talking to people. Or perhaps I am a bit too inclined to attach myself to the most outlandish theory out there…

I’ve also been talking up the “island moving through time” theory. Makes sense to me.
Is anyone else disgusted by the way Kate mothers that child? Especially after her decidedly non-maternal side was featured in previous seasons? She’s always either clinging on to the kid for dear life or treating him like a baby genius whenever does anything that babies do. I haven’t thought a whole lot about mothering, or anything, but her behavior really creeps me out.
I agree………i think that the island has moved in time, but right back in time! In some sneak peeks, it shows Loche witnessing Echo’s brothers plane crashing again, so i think it’s all gone back in time, and everything on the island is fresh again, sooo i reckon that Jack, Kate, Hurlet etc etc are going to crash back on the island the same way they got there, and maybe at the same “Time.” So imagine that if Echo’s Brother’s plane crashed on the 31st day of the islands exsistance (not correct but go with it) and the oceanic plane crashed 20 days after that (again not true) well i think that if the island has gone back in time, when loche witnesses Echo’s Brother’s plane crashing, however long after that oceanic flight crashed (20 days) will be how long Kate, Jack etc are going to have to wait until they can re-crash on the island!
I love Lost and last night’s episodes were awesome! Full of action but still focused on the characters, with some humor thrown in as well (Hurley!!!). I don’t know if I can talk about the premiere since some people probably DVR’d it, so that’s all I’ll say about that.
One of my theories is that Claire is dead. Y’know how that rocket hit her home and blew it up, leaving her pretty much okay? I think either she died then and was an apparition like other dead people (probably unlikely, since Sawyer carried her and I don’t think physical contact has been done with the other ghostly apparitions on the island) or had some kind of injury that killed her later on in the night. Remember how in response to Claire saying she got her bell rung but would be okay, Miles said something like “I wouldn’t count on that.” She also mentioned having a headache – possible brain injury? That would explain her leaving Aaron and being chill with her dead father in the cabin. It would also explain Miles suddenly taking an interest in Claire and staring at her all creepy-like.
Re: Claire . . . great theory! I was convinced that she was still alive, but your argument is really quite compelling.
I’d settle for the writers treating her with a modicum of respect, and not constantly vindicating Jack’s attitude towards her.
I have always always always hated that. First because I couldn’t see what any of them saw in each other.
Second because it spewed Kate’s characterisation all over the map, as they wrote her as an aspect of Jack and Sawyer’s relationship.
Third because everything it was supposed to show about them could be done better with other characters: Kate’s friendship with Sayid is infinitely more touching; if Jack is the good boy bringing out the best in a bad girl, then Juliet is a way more suitable bad girl, and actually has something in common with him; and if Sawyer is a bad boy with a heart of gold, then that’s better shown with characters he doesn’t want to fuck (like his eventual protectiveness towards Hurley).
Fourth because it’s a goddamn Bermuda Love Triangle that makes all their other realtionships disappear. (And the typo in the previous sentence is rather appropriate since I found all those other relationships far more real).
That said, I’ll be watching Sunday.
(Does anyone else find themselves speculating about a metamythos linking Lost, Alias, and Fringe?)
I just found this site as Season 5 begins and it’s good to find womens’ discussions.
Early on in the series, mention was made of the higher sperm count of men on the island (which may have helped Sun become pregnant). However, raging testosterone seems to be part of that phenomenon as we watch Jack, Sawyer, Sayid, Jin, Michael, Charlie, Locke, etc. spend way too much time knocking each other senseless, raging beyond reason, etc., including the aforementioned love triangle. Hurley has often been the voice of compassion and reason (and yes, kudos to Charlie for his good fathering instincts).
I love the show, but I wish there were more women (or men with the vision to move beyond violence) writing it. I’m hoping that it’s all heading for some future time of utopian resolution.
If I could write the end, Juliet (my favorite female character) should stay with Jack and Kate with Sawyer. I also wish my favorite male character, Locke, could be able to bring Hellen back (some “time” triky gimnick) or find someone suitable.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to watch how a team of male writers portray women characters in such a flaky way.
