UPDATE: Whoa. No news yet on the Vitter amendment, but another amendment has also been proposed — this one attacking access to affordable contraception! Call your Senators! Call, call, call!
Sen. David Vitter is yet again attacking Planned Parenthood. He has introduced an amendment to the appropriations bill that would single out Planned Parenthood as ineligible for funding under Title X.
Planned Parenthood has faced these kinds of attacks many times before, even though (or because of, depending on your perception) they’re the leading provider of reproductive health care in the entire country. As the economy worsens, even more people are seeking out assistance from the organization, and they need more help than ever.
Call your Senators today and ask them to speak out on the floor and oppose Sen. David Vitter’s Amendment No. 601 to the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 (H.R.1105).

The vote is expected to take place this afternoon, which means that it could actually happen any minute. So call NOW. I’ll keep this post updated if there is any news.

I’m e-mailing my governor. There’s a place where it makes you choose a topic for the e-mail, and I’m torn between abortion/reproductive rights and health care. I’m not sure which is likely to get the best response. It’s sad that women’s health care (a.k.a. reproductive rights?) is a debated issue in the first place.
This is disgusting. As an aside I just wanted to point out that I am a male and Planned Parenthood is also my only affordable source for sexual health care.
I’m a local reporter in South Georgia and recently covered a campaign stop from congressman Jack Kingston. He railed against government money being used for contraceptives. He actually said, and I quote, “We are very clearly sending a message that we are more into condoms than condemnation,” before going on to explain how pointless it is to promote safe sex when, afterall, we all know abstinence-only education is the “only way to be sure.”
Done. Called both of my Senators. Thanks for the heads-up.
Well, David Vitter is one of my senators and I can’t wait to vote against him next year.
