I wrote about female collectives, Grace Lee Boggs and activism, girl bands of the 90s, the movie moment when a girl takes off her glasses, and the artist Isa Genzken, with art videos by some great young artists, and a cool old Sinead O’Conner video.

About how VH1′s new “Tough Love” show and movies/books like “He’s Just Not That Into You” are trying to perpetuate the outdated idea that all women are Cathy (the Sunday comics character).
Also, this, a collection of hilarious things I read in the Chicago Reader personal ads this week.
This week:
We took a look at the lingerie revolution going on in Saudi Arabia.
We compared two vastly different celebrity reactions to the Chris Brown/Rihanna story (adding to the Top 10 Things We Wish People Would Stop Saying about it).
And finally, we told Rush Limbaugh to suck it. (You too can support the cause).

I blog about my personal recollections of growing up in a mining community in Scotland during the 1984/85 strike.
http://safespaceblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/1984-85-miners-strike-personal.html
“Dad did try to get us active with the Women Against Pit Closures, but it was awkward for us. My parents were divorced so my Mum didn’t feel she had the right to throw herself into all the women defending their men stuff, despite her entire family then and historically being engaged in mining. I was at an awkward age, not still a child, not quite an adult, just felt young and silly and like I had nothing to contribute whenever I went to the miners club. It did feel like a male environment and I wasn’t very comfortable there. At 15 it was wonderful ogling sun-bathing striking miners from a distance, but I blushed and got a bit tongue-tied if I actually had to talk to one I wasn’t related to.
The women in my family were never able to sing “Stand by Your Man” with a straight face, and devised our own spoof version that did not let men, not even heroic working class ones, escape responsibility for their part in the subjugation of women.”

I finally saw Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist on DVD and have a few observations on the adaptation from book to screen. I was pleasantly surprised.
Maybe it’s because my own relationship is in a pretty happy phase right now, but I got on the topic of relationships this week. I wrote a take down of Alex Benzer’s HuffPo piece where he argues that smart people are relationship-impaired. (He’s not just wrong, he’s also sexist.) In a less political vein, I ruminated on the dynamics of virtuous and vicious circles in long-term relationships.
Less a post from me, more a bitch-fest between me and a commenter about the NYT allowing known anti-feminist Kate Roiphe to (poorly, misguidedly) review Elaine Showalter’s new feminist book.
I’z writing again. I’z also rly proud of these three pieces.
“X” is a feminist issue. Why the framing is totally, totally fucking wrong.
Quoted. Why we need to stop pretending that the “isms” are about who we are.
My life. Why the focus on work-for-pay as The Central Aspect Of Identity is unfortunate.
I rambled on some in reply to Germaine Greer’s claim that women aren’t as funny as men, and gave my opinion on the recent Vanity Fair cover.
On why I prefer the term “anti-choice” to “pro-life” (the second post in a new series, Language Matters).
As part of a March Promo Tour, I did a radio interview.
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/circle-of-seven/2009/03/07/readers-entertainment-radio
You can listen to the host get flustered, leave dead air and just move on when I raise topics–especially transgender ideas–that he doesn’t know how to handle.
And yes, all that in the context of writing romance novels!
And
Bless me, Jean Nidetch, for I have sinned in which I join weight watchers. I am not blogging much about the dieting, because that is boring. And I’m not doing much analysis of cultural pressures to be thin. For me, it’s a very simple pressure: gravity. I want to not hurt all the time.
I wrote this week about quite a few things – but one of the things that might help others is about creating gratitude in your life and business, and how that can help you be successful. Here’s a link to the blog post – http://www.abalancedalternative.com/blog/?p=75. I hope this helps and look forward to speaking to any of you about the post.
Thanks for this opportunity.

Looking at a different NYT graphic (not the geographic unemployment one) that shows the wage gap industry by industry… and questioning how much of it is really due to women’s “personal choices” (their words) — and what those mean and what they are.
This week, I chose to own my past in My Rape Story.

This week, I wrote about police violence, started a conversation about non-violent metaphors for creativity, and blogged my response to the most recent episode of Dollhouse.
I also have five poems in wheelhouse magazine and one in foam:e.
I’ve had a busy week over at Jump off the Bridge:
I wrote about the military mom who took her kids to work, asked if we need a new, inclusive movement (we’ve got a great convo going over that), and I announced what I’ve got planned for Women’s History Month (along with a disclaimer I just put up).
In honor of the Prop 8 hearings, I’ve resumed my blog, which showcases the wit and wisdom of the anti-marriage-equality folks….
Here are a couple of particular gems:
Torcher Song Trilogy
Gay Marriage: Now with Soi-Disant Horse Pucky!
Enjoy(?).
I’m wondering where’s the Meg White love?
Oh, and I’m pulling double duty this week. The Feminist Underground has a few quick posts for ya:
We’ve got an example of how privilege can smack you in the face, we miss Sandra Day O’Connor, we’re hoping the news on the Prop 8 case is not as sad as it’s expected to be, and we’re celebrating International Women’s Day by asking your hopes for the future.
Looked at how people determine what they’ll give up for Lent, how the Church can enable domestic violence in a guest post at BelowTheBelt, and why ‘post-racial’ is not a word.
Holla everyone!
@ The Czech:
A weird Politico article about a study saying Sarah Palin’s “looks” damaged her candidacy. Don’t they just mean her gender? But yet they don’t mention sexism…
Why do people who hate gays love porn?
Working class women founded International Women’s Day, which is today!
There’s a new small press being born, Verb Noire, which is asking for contributions to help start up. This new press was born out of a recent months-long discussion mostly on livejournal, about racism and white privilege in SF and SF fandom/publishing.
Well, after a *long* hiatus, I’ve returned criticising an event put on at the University of Alberta. I talk about the race and gender problems of the event, as well as the need for men to commit to the effort to end sexual assault.

Oy, these html tags…..
I added links and more names to follow up on my initial comments on the Feministe posting of the Top 100 Women in History.
I wrote about the relationship between nudity taboos and body image; thinking about what bodies we compare our own to and how this affects our self-esteem.

Sen. Harkin Pressures NCCAM to “Validate Alternative Approaches”.
Sadly, the War on Science has a Democratic foot solider. Cuz facts have an anti-Harkin bias.
As a CA resident, specifically San Franciscan now I am very engaged in Prop 8 but as a Black woman I can’t help but wonder where was the outrage over and support for 4 Black lesbians who were sent to prison for defending themselves against a gay basher in Prop 8 & New Jersey 4 & Other Misdeeds: Where Race, Class & Gender Collide http://snipurl.com/d52dv
This week on MMW, we announced AQSAZINE’s launch, highlighted an Arab arts festival in D.C., informed journalists about how they should REALLY write about Muslims, took issue with the Washington Times’ framing of the recent data on Muslim Americans, and examined Amours Voilees’ representations of love and the veil. I also sort of phoned it in on the Friday Links.
Also: Monday will see the launch of altmuslimah! Be sure to check it out!
I’ve been posting like a demon recently, but the newest offering is a response to a truly stupid attack on college students from today’s Washington Post.

This week I wrote:
The Right’s Favorite Scapegoat, about David Vitter’s attack on Planned Parenthood.
Fuck the Pohleece, which is self-explanatory.
And a rant about men who refer to themselves as “babysitters” re: their own kids.
I think it went into moderation! (any reason why it does that sometimes but not all the time?)
For international women’s day, I asked – what if we actually cared about violence?
On a possibly related note, I considered the prospects for abolishing the police force.
I did a series of posts based on discussing the novel “Brave New World: an introduction, a post on love, a post on drugs, and a post on freedom
i wrote an interpretation of the movie Lakeview Terrace: http://filthygrandeur.blogspot.com/2009/03/racial-masculinity-in-lakeview-terrace.html
mainly i examine the masculinity struggle between the two male characters, and would love some thoughts.
Mommy bloggers weigh in on the childfree bloggers. And they’re oh so supportive. Not.
And I don’t see the “selflessness” in doing precisely what you want to do, for no other reason than you want to do it.
Sarah MC, nice piece about the daddy sitters, that one ticked me off too.
I’ve got a piece about whether you would give up cocktails because of the increased cancer risk
Also Gap is giving 30 percent off coupons and then 5 percent to the leukemia and lymphoma society if you need anything.
I’ve also got a new giveaway.
It’s hard to scroll past everyone’s great entries! It makes my proliferation of “crap” and “suck it” more juvenile than I had anticipated. I’m keeping up with my one woman a day with Julia Child, Nellie Bly, and Big Mama Thornton. And as I promised before, I did list 100 women. :)
This is my post about the “expert” that VideoGamers.com consulted to support the view that Resident Evil 5 is not racist. It’s called “‘Expert’ Consulted on RE5 Racism Issue: Not an Expert on Race After All”. I link to a number of discussions on the Resident Evil 5 racism issue.
Oh, I am a little late, but here goes:
I was a birthday brat this week.
I discussed the prospect of rescinding the so called conscience clause.
And, today I wrote about how I was going to celebrate International Women’s Day.
OK. I conducted an audio interview with Mao and Alejandra from the Evergreen Women of Color Coalition on my postcast and online radio show for the International Women’s Week of Week in Resistance events. Found on my personal podcast…
…or on the group blog, below:
In addition to the audio interview I posted a list of their upcoming Free of charge events that keep going until Tuesday.

My response:
Celtic trolls and dragons
Un-frakkin’-believable.
You are not shocked about the cold blooded murder of a family by sociopathic teenagers.
You are shocked that some of the killers are bi-sexual.
Rod…that has to one of the most shockingly bizarre and atrociously inappropriate sentiments I have read in years.
A brutal and vicious crime has been committed, and you can only think that you don’t want your kids to be icky bisexuals??!!
Blatant idiocy like this is why so many of my GLBT brothers and sisters use believe conservative Christians are overtly prejudiced.
I think this column needs to be read widely, and I will sending it where it will be appreciated for what it is.
Press goading women into mindless consumerism? Check.
Good news on Indian women’s union SEWA? Check.
My thoughts on International Women’s Day? Check.
This week I blogged about Michael Steele and Chuck D; how hard it is to find clothes when you’re a chunky monkey; why rape jokes aren’t funny; and white male privilege on CNBC.
Enjoy!
I wrote about the lack of confronting racism in She-Ra, Princess of Power.
And yes, that cartoon is bloody damn well worth watching, despite its flaws.
I posted about how I’m not going to shave my legs any more.
Here’s the transcript of a speech I gave on sex and relationships as a political arena for an International Women’s Day forum yesterday.

i made a blog, its called skeptifem and its about science, skepticism, and feminism. heres an example of debunking stupid beauty related fluff that is supposed to pass for science journalism:
http://skeptifem.blogspot.com/2009/03/really-ugh.html
I wrote about President Obama offering a new model of masculinity. The most elegant egghead: of Obama’s new masculine paradigm.
Thembisa S. This week, I dealt with:
The downside of stigma in sex work, which is inspired by a post elsewhere concerning a 15 yr old girl who was working for an escort agency, and how badly the law treated her (see that post here)
Porn performer Sasha Grey responded to articles about her, Aspasia wrote about it, and I pretty much just quoted and linked. It’s good reading!
I also took part in local democracy/law (the post also mentions losing my wallet, and the incomparable Renegade Evolution’s call for help)
Finally, I admit to a shameful pleasure – the game show “Total Wipeout” on BBC1. My excuse is that they take the piss out of everyone equally…
Helen has a terrific International Women’s Day piece: “International Women’s day: On being the Groke”, on how making feminist noise is received by the masses.
I’m playing with fluff: “Top 5 TV credits: What are your favourites?” and Dollhouse irritations: “Yet another Whedon peeve [1]: “What is that? Why is it beeping?””
And I wrote a bit about the Ohio case where a warehouse worker was fired for pumping breastmilk “unscheduled”, which is going to the Supreme Court; and broadened the discussion into talking about class, race, and mothering in the workforce: “Some women are afraid of being mummy-tracked; others are afraid of being fired.”
In honor of Intl Women’s Day, I wrote about how unnecessary medical procedures and interventions in childbirth constitute violence against women.

I wrote about the current imbrolgio in science fiction and fantasy: do it for the living, do it for the dead, do it for the monsters under your bed.
Totally coincidental that I posted it on women’s day but I wrote a post on the sad state of Iraqi widows.
