Conservative Christians are upset that an online version of the game of life allows you to play as a homosexual couple. I have a mini rant about how dumb this is.
This week, I wrote about an experience I’m confused about–was it sexual assault? Also, someone recently told me that being a vegetarian will cause me to bleed out of me ass. But maybe it’s only a southern thang.
This is primarily of interest to Texans, but I blogged about the upcoming Lilith Fund Reproductive Equity Awards
A roundup of things going on in the world of immigration.
Only In A Woman’s World Frito Lay Goes Girly: Women are now no longer considered a niche market and yet essentialist gender marketing is still the stock and trade
Teaching About the Laramie Project Will Get You fired: Looking at the case of a teacher that lost her job for daring to teach the Laramie Project.
If Your Mom catches you jerking off punch her in the face: Looking at the case where a man punched his mother because she dared to tell him that masturbating in a public space is wrong and the victim blaming that ensued from this incident.
Megan McCain Responds To Laura Ingraham: Looking at her response on the view and a discussion of the ways in which women fat shame as a form of collusion with patriarchy.
Confession: I think Sylvia Plath was kind of an asshole…
- and yes, I recognize that thinking this makes *me* kind of an asshole, but I’m ok with that.
And also- The Kind of Girl You Can Take Home to Your Mother…
I looked at the criticism of orgasmic birth and discussed racism, film and political correctness.
I talked about rape in a heavily gendered military setting and how an intensely masculine society “invaded” by women creates men who feel emasculated, who then take out their desire to maintain control over women via rape.
The two latest posts in my Legendary Latinas series are on Rita Moreno and Gloria Anzaldua. I also have a post up about gender & the economy.
this week i wrote why i think gwyneth paltrow should STFU in regards to her “advice” to joaquin phoenix (not cuz i’m on his side, since they’re both idiots): http://filthygrandeur.blogspot.com/2009/03/shut-up-gwyneth.html

Responded to Shakes Anonymous’ post on relinquishing a child. (The resultant argument was quite expected.)
I squealed about my favourite 80′s cartoon, She-ra and the Ultimate Ship that resulted but never really did get totally explored.
And shared in part of the collective “aw fuck” that Kyle Payne is blogging amongst us again. You know, the molestor-posing-as-a-feminist who said he wouldn’t blog until he was welcomed back by the feminist community.
The week wound up mostly about international issues, in part because some of the most active US campuses were on spring break.
I wrote about police violence against students sitting-in in Spain, protests against the deadly militarization of a Yemeni campus, a student protest that rolled back a tuition hike in Vietnam, and last week’s massive French student and labor protests.
Meanwhile, back in the States, Visit W3Schools! is forming, and a labor solidarity campaign against a university apparel manufacturer has won disaffiliations on nearly two dozen campuses since January.
I gave some thought to the politics of attraction – in a mostly lighthearted vein, inspired by a hilarious post by Aunt B on why patriarchy sucks for conservative men, too. (I hope she won’t mind me shamelessly promoting her post along with mine!)
Oops. HTML screwup. That second-to-last link (still in moderation, as I write this) should have read “A new national organization for adjunct faculty is forming.”

Here’s what the ESC was up to this week:
~We’ve started sharing our fabulous taste in music with our readers, and surely they’re very grateful.
~We took shameless self-promotion to the extreme, because our empire just won’t stop growing.
~We attended the feministing happy hour in NYC, which was also a fundraiser for the awesome organization Girls for Gender Equity.
~In light of the whole Meghan McCain/Laura Ingraham drama, we took a look back at some of the things that Ingraham has said in the past, and concluded that it’s pretty ridiculous for her to appoint herself judge of who should be taken seriously.
~We took a look at a new group called Votes Have Consequences, which is going to target certain pro-choice members of Congress in the 2010 elections, and some of their rather interesting “pro-life” rhetoric.
I’m linking here because of a little nugget buried in the middle of the post: Girls reported their parents are twice as likely to encourage them to become actresses as to become engineers.
“We Can’t All Eat Lettuce.”
Snippet:
Humans can’t survive on lettuce alone, but humans can survive on plants alone. As the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada say:
“appropriately planned vegetarian [including vegan] diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and provide health benefits”
Nonviolence United says:
[...]“40,000 will starve to death… every single day. This doesn’t happen because there isn’t enough for everyone. This happens because while people are starving, we are wasting enormous amounts of grain to feed cows, pigs, chickens and other animals so that we may satisfy our desire for meat, milk and eggs.” [...]
“Because raising animals for food takes so much land, water and other resources, the Earth would be able to sustain only about 2 Billion people on a meat and dairy based diet. With a world population of nearly 7 Billion people, it’s easy to see that we need to find a better way.”
I’m in love with Meghan McCain.

Just blogging out of frustration. A summary of my recent feelings.
On the border
I’m one of several feminist historians who’ve been blogging on Judith Bennett’s ‘History Matters: Patriarchy and the Challenge of Feminism’ this month.
My latest post is on the periodization of women’s history.
I wrote about how I feel about my transmale breasts and how the media imposes a flat-chested male ideal, just as it impose a big-chested female ideal.
I also wondered about the possible emotional effects of testosterone therapy on transgender men.
As part of a news roundup, I wrote about the Brazilian excommunication and about Israel’s ban on the celebration of Arab Culture Day.

Well, robyn, thank you for providing my daily dose of ableism for today. i did not know that having disabling depression made me a sociopathic asshole. thanks for “educating” me on that.
this week I rewrote an MSNBC ‘sex scandal’ story about rape as a ‘generosity scandal’ story about theft to highlight the problems with how the media reports stories of rape. I don’t know if this has been done before but I haven’t seen it and i feel pretty clever after writing this.

I reported on a filmmaker who is doing the old “sell your virginity online and let me film it” routine, and pretending it’s edgy! and Fresh!
The twist this time? He’s been attempting to solicit random people on university campuses into his little prostitution fantasy, many of whom are underage (especially this time of year), and filming their responses without permission. Campus folk and police are unamused.
Special K’s new ad irritated me.
Also irritated by Pat “the douche” Kenny an Irish broadcaster
It’s been an irritating week!

This week I shared the good news that our favorite Arizona sherriff is under investigation, a local story about a pastor who would rather go to jail than stop harassing women going to a clinic, and a series of posts on this prompt:
The series came out in four installments; Part I, Part II, Part III, and Part IV.

A post about an annoying chain email sent to me by my (extremely conservative) grandfather.
And a wee St. Patrick’s Day post from Tuesday.
Hugo Schwyzer wrote mocking the theory that men *have* to be older in hetero relationships. I dug in a little deeper in Older Men, Younger Women, and Two Different Speeds Towards Adulthood.

GallingGalla –
I’ve struggled with depression on and off for my entire life, and I agree with Robyn: Sylvia Plath was a self-pitying jerk in a lot of ways. And no, it wasn’t all about the disease: an old professor of my mine knew her, and said that by the time she was a sophomore at Smith she was so into the idea of the Artist Suffering and Dying for Her Art that nothing anyone said to the contrary could penetrate.
Also, having clinical depression does not give anyone, even a talented poet, the right to backbite someone who paid for her schooling and medical care, and rip apart the school that educated and later employed her. Sylvia Plath did all these things.
She may have been talented (personally I’ve never had much use for her poetry, but I know many people do), and she was certainly ill used by her husband. But a nice person? No.

A couple of magaziney things from me this week.
First, a story I wrote, entitled: Why we’re not that into HJNTIY (He’s Just Not That Into You).
Second, a story I didn’t write and didn’t like (two qualities not related ;)), entitled: A naked woman walks into a bar… (and Cosmo asks the patrons to list everything that’s wrong with her body)
oh, and i just added “It’s never too early to be sexist,” which is my rant on the commercial for the Screature toy: http://filthygrandeur.blogspot.com/2009/03/its-never-too-early-to-be-sexist.html
Eh, somebody on True Mom Confessions made a truly obnoxious confession about who has the right to reproduce (only the rich, apparently), which prompted an entire post as a response.
I had a few quick little posts this week:
, on their newest commercial that involves a dress being ripped off of a black, female mannequin
, on a drink recipe I found online telling people to give the drink to a woman and she “won’t be able to say no”
, on the trend to have disembodied ladies on the covers of misogynistic movies… and the new cover of Psychology Today
Woops, html did not work properly in that last comment – no fancy stuff now…

This week, BBC television show “The One Show” asked Do we still need feminism? I and at least one other male respondent said “yes” – a number of women respondents said “no”, and some male respondents spouted the same old guff about feminists hating men.
In Waltham Forest, primary schools insist on teaching tolerance for gay folks; US hate-preacher Fred Phelps wants to come over and protest outside the school. Parents keeping their kids out of these classes, apparently, will be regarded as encouraging truancy.

zooeyibz: The first two comments on the Sioux City newspaper story you linked to pointed out, very astutely, that the school administrators probably are desperate for her to take the test because they know she’ll score high and boost the school’s overall ranking on NCLB or whatever idiotic, arbitrary statistical score they’re worried about.
Yet another example of how arbitrary standards and school bureaucrats are a lethal combination.
