Jill, I've been keeping my eye on this story (translation: I watch Maddow), and I'm wondering if this might be a legacy Hail Mary. I get the impression that Gov. Paterson is an intelligent man, and is not seriously considering running for re-election given his approval rating. He may (rightly or wrongly) see this as an opportunity to pass into law policy that he personally supports, and damn the political consequences.

Yeah, I'd really, really love to see this go through, but agree with E that GENDA (anti-discrimination legislation protecting gender nonconforming people) should be the priority right now. I plan to go to Equality and Justice Day in Albany in a couple of weeks (the LGBT lobby day), and it's the primary reason I'm going. Thankfully, the Pride Agenda seemed to me to be pushing it even harder last year than marriage equality and seems to have the same priorities this year, which I think is a very good thing.

It would be awesome to see this finally go through in NY, but wouldn't it be better if he'd actually listened to the people who've already been working on this issue? A no vote from the state senate on this could be a disaster, and he doesn't care. Not to mention GENDA could use some attention as well, and since I don't know of any Democrats in the NYS senate who've made killing that their pet issue (dear Ruben Diaz: DIAF), it might have a better chance at passing.
