It saddens me to tears to see so few who share my degree of indignation regarding this issue. There’s no grey-area here, we either condone torture or not. A just nation simply does not allow the fascistic “just following orders” defense.

I think that it’s time to treat those responsible for this as criminals.Maybe then they would realise what its like to be at the total mercy of others.

On the subject of borderline brutality…I would like to see more coverage of the very real medical consequences of these techniques. Stress positions can be lethal. Sleep-deprivation can be lethal. Head injuries can be lethal. They’re arguably not as bad as the rack, but they’re not minor. They have the potential to do serious physical harm.

I want to know what the hell “borderline torture” is. Now that I know what torture is (and according to the Bush administration, “isn’t”), what pray tell, is borderline?

I’ve read the memos. I’ve read many posts and opinions and newspaper reports. It’s making me sick. I do hope that the citizens of the United States demand an investigation into the torture of detainees and the prosecution of any and all perpetrators, including Dick Cheney and George Bush. When democracy and the rule of law is threatened in the United States, all the democracies of the world are endangered. Thanks for this post.

Accountability isn’t enough. If Obama has any decency he should be calling Fitzgerald in from Illinois to run prosecutions.
