Last month, Rachel posted on a new documentary on abortion in Ethiopia. That 23 minute film is called Not Yet Rain, and is now available for free viewing online.
The film includes interviews with two young women who were raped and are now seeking legal abortion care, a woman who self-induced several of her own abortions, a woman whose daughter died as the result of an unsafe abortion, midwives/nurses who provide safe abortions, and more. I just finished watching, and it is informative, compassionate and moving.
The title of the film refers to a proverb, “Thunder is not yet rain.” In the context of the film, it refers to the fact that though abortion is now legal in Ethiopia for cases of rape and to save a woman’s health or life, and though this it has one of Africa’s most liberal abortion laws, it is not a solution. Women are still struggling to obtain safe abortion care, and still seeking out unsafe abortions. Women are still dying, and will continue to die, until more is done to provide better education and create greater abortion access. This one move is not enough to guarantee the reproductive health and safety of Ethiopian women.
Click here to watch Not Yet Rain now. And make sure to spread the word.
