This post and especially the title really struck me, because for Earth day I was writing about women and water resources. It's great that kids are being taught about their ecological footprint young enough to really get it ingrained in terms of how they think.

"how vital it is to teach these lessons to our kids, to expose them to the widest ranges of experiences and people and possibilities, so that the idea of loving the planet and all the things on it, the values of gender and racial justice, the aesthetic of kindness and mindfulness, prevails, becomes inherent in them"

I agree, and i'm glad i saw this post, it makes me less scared for the future. Everything looked like it was getting worse, what with a majority vote against the UK government doing something to stop children from viewing porn online in my paper the other day.

Let's hope more schools adopt these ideas! All air-breathing, water-drinking earthlings!

I think a lot about my schooling. Like it was good for some things, sometimes. But it was still so euro-centric. We learned about the horrors of slavery and things like that. MLK, the standard fare. But Malcolm X was never brought up! That's so cool that your child is getting such a good education and I hope it continues!

"we’d been taught as children, that we could challenge bigotry, root for the “underdog,” and advocate for others’ rights because to not do so was unkind (also a first lesson in privilege)."

"The teacher who is comfortable with turning a blind eye to certain students is not a person who should teach."

Thank you for this entry.
