“[L]abor cost” is what real people make in wages and other benefits.

Unions, in other words, are a convenient bogeyman, yet they do and have done more to improve the living standards of American workers than anything else.

Bless you for reminding people of this! That the federal gov’t here in Canada doesn’t get it is to be expected; they’re the Conservative Party, after all. But I was severely disappointed in the Obama administration for demanding the same thing.

There is still much debate on the economic necessity of government stimulus. It is far from settled. Crowding out, inflation and repayment of deficits (plus interest) must be accounted for in any calculation. Also, there is much debate whether lack of demand is the real issue. If excess aggregate demand was not justified, then trying to bring demand back up to that level is futile and unhealthy for the economy. Equilibrium aggregate demand (if such a concept is legitimate) just may be lower, and people were spending beyond their means to pay. In other words, consumers’ demand exceeded their actual or effective demand.
