This week we played referee to a homophobic douchebag throwdown, and took at look at the situation regarding the possibility of an upcoming vote on same sex marriage in the New York State Senate, including a rundown on potentially movable senators to contact.
This week I wrote about the way local news outlets outed a trolley driver as trans in “reporting” on his involvement in a crash. I also wrote a bit about the gendered sentencing in one teen texting case.
Better late than never–I also finally wrote up a few of the Twitter tools that Deanna Zandt and Susan Mernit brought up in their WAM! panel.
A few of us are also in the process of starting up a new feminist-centered sports blog, so if anyone’s interested, you can contact me at Sagittarian Librarian.
I wrote about the top female webpreneurs and Dell’s unfortunate new site for women (which they’ve since revamped a smidge).
Wishing All a great week. These are the conversations we’re having at my blog. Feel free to join in!

Janet Jackson had a birthday this week. I’d like to see her get her career back on track. She’s been woefully misaligned and marginalized but also needs to examine her own choices.

Oh this is sure to be controversial but I’m not celebrating Kate Gosselin or her husband and their media tour to promote their show and pimp out their kids for the millions in salaries and endorsements they get for their show Jon & Kate Plus 8. And yes I look at Kate being the one in charge and this is less about her gender but more about the uplift of white (young, thin, hetero) woman privilege.

Should Poly People Wait Their Turn: Looking at some in the GLB community who feel that poly people should wait to fight for their right to marry so as to not threaten any gains made in same sex marriage.
SRS Not Covered in Manitoba: This is the second Canadian province to deny coverage for SRS surgery because they have categorized it as cosmetic.
Adam Lambert: Gay/Straight should he declare: Since the release of photos of Adam kissing a man there has been much speculation as to his sexuality. DO we even have the right to ask the question?
Don’t Swear When You Call 911: A young girl is shamed, hung up on three times, called a bitch and arrested when she had the nerve to say the F word when she called 911 to seek help for seriously ill father. Apparently young women are to be careful of what language they are using not matter the circumstances.
Got a few posts to share this week:
The Wanting comes in Waves
Two Unhappy Stories Out of Afghanistan
CK Louis: On Being White
And: part one and part two of a new series on the women of the EZLN.

longish piece on my Jewniversary:

and one on the tax freakout and ways I am indebted to rich folks who pay taxes:

Someone completely misses the point when they linked to my Adam Lambert post. I discuss this in random detail.
Doing my part to promote China Mieville’s latest novel, The City and The City. I include a video. Check him out (he’s a hot genius).
A girl is arrested for saying “fuck” on a 911 call.
The connotations of hand-crafting. This is in response to a reaction I got from my fiance’s dad when he found out I made my own wedding dress.
More about the male as default, which I’ve been writing about for a bit.
Hey Jill, hope your house move went well.
The big news in Australia this past week has been the latest rugby league gang rape/group sex scandal. I’ve just written up a feature on it (due out mid-June), and posted this morning about the thought processes I went through in the process of writing it: http://rachelhills.tumblr.com/post/109206612/matthew-johns-scandal
The public is largely siding with the football player at the centre of the scandal, and I as I outline in the post, I suspect at least some of this has to do with the media’s very carefully (legally) qualified coverage of it. The word “rape” has barely been used at all, making it look like these guys are in trouble for a consenual “group sex romp” (words which have turned up in more than one article).
If you’re interested, I also recommend checking out this post, “You Can’t Expect Men To…”, on the excuses given for this sort of behaviour: http://monkeytypist.tumblr.com/post/107464594/you-cant-expect-men-to
In non-NRL news, I also found myself pissed off with a Twitter follower who ranted against the Australian government’s move towards Paid Maternity Leave, and pondered what might happen if men could have babies: http://rachelhills.tumblr.com/post/106480510/i-wish-men-could-have-babies
I stumbled across a mainstream-like relationship book that’s actually pretty iconoclastic in terms of what we “know” about gender and libido “imbalances.” I’ve mentioned it in How Gender Constructions Interfere With Understanding Libido in Relationships and Excuse Me Myth, I Don’t Believe We’ve Been Introduced. I also reposted a tech-savvy sex-workers nice takedown of some knee-squeezing twits at ZDNet by pointing out their technical ignorance, their unfamiliarity with the history of podcasting, and their journalistic insufficiency.

Hope the move went well. I’d rather have root canal than move so you have my sympathies.
I wrote about Pfizer’s PR campaign , more information a little more information about the 1o year old with breast cancer and the cancer risk for anyone who has ever served at Camp Lejeune
I wrote about the latest study to pathologize the female orgasm (bad sex is all your fault, haven’t you heard?). Plus, a diddy on the new (hot) female athlete America is sexing up.
Feminist radio as comedy? Umm, I think not.
Beauty Pageants: A Round-Up.
Wrote this about L’Oreal and Freida Pinto, got a response from a L’Oreal exec and had to write this in response.
China’s first sex theme park coming soon.
Tip: Women, act like men at work and pay gap will disappear?
This week, I have some television reviews for you, the aftermath of those reviews, and the first result on my search for s ex-positive candidate in the European parliament elections in June:
Channel 4′s Extreme Male Beauty looked interesting, but was sub-par, and capped it all off with a rape culture supporting scene at the end. i complained to Channel 4 and got a highly unsatisfactory reply.
BBC2′s How Violent Are You? was more interesting, and while it couldn’t hope to cover the full breadth of its subject area, was still good value. This prompted me to ask myself, “how violent am I?”
Finally, the lead No2EU – Yes to Democracy candidate for my region replied to my email about sexual minorities’ rights with a very positive answer. I think I know who I’m voting for!
A few posts worth noting this week…
1. Does Ariel Worry About Passing? – A somewhat tongue-in-cheek post which asks the (pressing) questions about whether fairy-tale characters worry about being read as magical or mythical, and whether they hope to pass as human-born-humans…
2. Dreams of Surgery – Following some discussion about The Surgery (by which I mean SRS) this past week, I ended up having a dream where I was recently post-op.
3. Peeing Standing Up, Passing, and More! – Thoughts on the pleasures of being able to pee standing up, passing, and other randomness.
4. A Slight Obsession – Garfunkel and Oates are amazing. There’s no debating it.
A quicky post questioning two “pink” snafus by Madison Ave this week: The Della computer and the Fling candy bar.
An essay asking why the restaurant industry is dominated by men: http://www.sirensmag.com
1. Queer Childhood: thoughts on how my queerness affected my upbringing, and how my upbringing affected my queerness.
2. Abortion, Execution, And The Moral Weight Of Fetuses: the title is pretty explanatory; the train of thought was sparked by this Feministe post on the Samantha Orobator case.
: )
A few reviews this week:
A Wink and a Smile is a unique and joyous celebration of the human body, mind, and spirit—complete with tassels.
The Speak! Radical Women of Color Media Collective CD uses spoken word, song, and poetry to detail the ins and outs of oppression and intersecting injustices, personal and collective struggle, and the redeeming powers of love, conviction, and pride.
We produce work and it validates us in a way that society doesn’t. Mainstream, white-American, classist culture is supposed to be the stamp of approval, but with El Reflejo, we have the opportunity to nourish a beautiful arena—one that’s free from the outsider’s gaze.
Nesrine Malik’s scathing review of the ITV drama Compulsion got me thinking a lot more about modern day adaptations of pre-twentieth century literary works featuring ethnic Indian actors. She has fair enough reasons to be perturbed: it seems that when diversity is presented on British TV, what’s served up for a wider, mostly White audience are actually tired stereotypes of overbearing family members, arranged marriages, and the ever recurring theme of honour and shame.
My favorite thing that I’ve written recently is a book review of the book ‘Getting Off: A Woman’s Guide to Masturbation’ Really amazing book. http://menstrualpoetry.com/womans-guide-masturbation
The Tax Slug: Do you have this creature in the US media?
Back in the world of “reasoned discourse” (Urrhmn?) Michael Steele (the current GOP RNC chair) is really grasping at straws to try to demonize gay marriage — via healthcare for newly married gay couples

Are we conscious of more than we think we are?
Thoughtful monkeys.
A review of the book The Sea Captain’s Wife, which is about race and gender in the 1800s but which I took to task over wild historical speculation. And then I ranted for awhile about our duty to treat “historical subjects” as actual human beings: http://talulahmankiller.wordpress.com/2009/05/14/the-sea-captains-wife/
Then I asked why everyone’s got to be such a dick to the lowly moped rider: http://talulahmankiller.wordpress.com/2009/05/13/in-which-i-threaten-to-harpoon-your-ass/
And then–in the same post–I imagined what it would be like if a historian tried to reconstruct my life using nothing but my ATM receipts and my email, as well as questioned my inability to decorate after moving 8 times in 3 years:http://talulahmankiller.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/the-futility-of-life-decorating/
Wow. It’s like I’m wonder woman or something.
Sorry if this is double-posted; I haven’t figured out this whole “edit” function yet.

I wrote about a a dream internship for medical students at the AC frickin L U (can I get a hell ya?) working on reproductive rights. I am going to try to finagle a way to do it. If they’ll have me.
Finally, I wrote a reply turned post about breastfeeding Nazis and formula is poison style
I wrote an essay about Lt. Uhura’s revamp in the new Trek movie, ranted a bit about “Macho Sues” in most mainstream media, and bitched a bit about the whole “humans are just animals” argument I see so often. I also have a very rambly post up on transnationality for the Asian Women Blog Carnival.
Oh! And I also have a piece for International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. It’s almost like a 101 primer on how these two issues relate to misogyny. Would love some feedback on whether I’m explaining clearly and whether I’m getting anything wrong.
My blog is out of hiatus, with two posts. The first looks at a study about the impact of role models on women in STEM university programs, and the second is about The Bergmann Effect, and (peripherally) the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.
Stop it before it starts, moving to action training recap highlights actions we can take to contribute to primary prevention of sexual and domestic violence.

If you read in French, there is a young feminists blog from Canada that is entirely in French called jesuisféministe.com (i am a feminist).
This week, I wrote about Feeling yes, feeling no, a nursery rhyme that I learned about how my body was private and not be shared.
I also wrote about having women/gender studies classes in highschool to educate teens about equality and sexism.

I chimed in on the mental illness/Mad Pride discussion:

Mental illness, medication, and the spiralling cost of being well.
Fuck Asher Roth. I write about 3OH!3 and their insanely offensive hit single, Don’t Trust Me, and how I hate that I think that song is so damn catchy. Then I ask someone else to write a better blog post about that group and get over Asher Roth. This band is a fine mix of racism and sexism and clearly also deserving of our disapproval.
