Rick Santorum sure is a romantic. He went on Fox’s “On the Record” to talk about Barack and Michelle Obama’s New York trip (where, for the record, they ate at an amazing farm-to-table restaurant, and the other diners literally applauded them as they left). First he praised the Obamas for being married, because ya know, black people don’t get married enough. Then he criticized them for going to New York:
I think he has to realize that flying to New York is self-indulgent. Go down to the corner bar and have a drink, a shot and a beer. It does not matter where you go with your wife, is that it’s with your wife.
Mrs. Santorum is one lucky lady. But I suppose if this is the best they can do to criticize Obama, things are pretty good.

I’m rather glad the leader of the free world can keep the fire alive with a strong, educated woman. They both know themselves and make the time to know each other, which is the only situation in which two people can share productive lives.
Did he even pay for that out of the White House budget? I mean money other than that of his salary. And I’m just adoring how no one had calculated the money/time all of Bush’s “indulgent” vacations cost. Niiiiice.
Yeah…where was Rick when George was flying himself and his wife down to Crawford, Texas (I am pretty sure they did not bike back and forth) every other month? Oh wait…he was kissing the president’s ass. Of course he could not be troubled to notice and complain.
Usually I dislike personal attacks, but with Santorum, how can you resist? Does anyone remember that photo taken of his concession speech, with his family at his side, the night he lost re-election to the Senate? His little girl looked absolutely grief-stricken. At the time I assumed she was sharing his disappointment, but I’m starting to wonder whether it was really a horrified reaction to the news that Daddy was going to be around the house a lot more.
Also, what Chava said. How happy I was to pay taxes for Bush to go to that stupid Potemkin-village ranch for weeks at a time to clear brush. (Although, considering what he did while actually working, maybe brush-clearing kept him from screwing things up more.)

I agree with the idea of not letting W. go unscathed with all of the expenses that he accrued over his terms. I watched a newscast a couple weeks ago where Obama went to lunch to eat a burger, and instead of people insisting on buying his meal, he refused them and pulled out cash and paid for his meal. I am pretty sure that Obama has done more for America in these last 6 months, than W. has done in his horrendous 8 year term.
I happen to be a subscriber to the “It doesn’t matter where you go, it’s that you go with [your partner]” sort of mundane romanticism, actually — comes with the territory when you spent four years across the country from each other. (Which doesn’t mean we don’t also do “special” things together, and enjoy them very much! But the mundane also has a special specialness, so to speak, to us.)
I’m interested in how the Obamas are supposed to “just go down to the corner bar,” though. OK, for your average couple, maybe. But, um, the President and First Lady, living in the White House? Interesting.
Heh. Mundane is cool with me, too, it’s just the really odd “go out and get DRUNK” idea that is exceedingly bizarre. I mean, seriously — a drink, a shot and a beer? While potentially fun, not generally what I would call romantic.
More faux-populist anti-elitism. The shot-and-beer thing, that’s what real ‘muricans drink, and who needs fancy-pants New York theayters anyway?

This reminds me of when Bush and his cabinet were vacationing during Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in New Orleans. If Condi could go shopping for shoes the day after that in NYC, I think a night out for the Obamas on a run of the mill Saturday is fine.
(Not to mention Bush’s extensive vacationing throughout both of his terms).
Perhaps he would consider the lunch my boyfriend and I just had (45 minutes – we had burritos, I had water, he had rootbeer) the most romantic thing ever. There were no drinks or shots though, so maybe not.
