Among other posts, I commented on a racially charged dress code policy at a Kansas City club that’s been causing a bit of a stir throughout the city. Apparently, the club owner kicked DJ Jazzy Jeff (you know, of Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff fame) off of the stage when he played Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend.” Even though the legendary hip hop DJ was payed to perform, he apparently wasn’t allowed to play hip hop. The story broke, and there turned out to be a major back story of continued racial discrimination. I wrote about it on Tuesday, and was referenced in the hip hop publication XXL: http://socialsciencelite.blogspot.com/2009/06/kansas-city-club-owner-hates-rap-music.html

A post about the post election violence in Iran. Government forces have not, as far as I have heard (and I have certainly not heard everything that’s going on there), been targeting women specifically, at least not yet, but if the protests continue, as Moussavi has called for them to–if you can log on to TehranBureau, the information’s there, but I’ve been having a hard time getting to the site–my guess is that the explicit targeting of women will become more and more prominent.
I wrote about my hatred of the Wedding Industrial Complex but love of Mr Plog.

Recently I’ve written about how not airbrushing out a birthmark apparently now qualifies as a Photoshop disaster, and how that same birthmark apparently is a sign of its bearer’s character. I’ve also been thinking a lot about assumptions lately, and how people unconsciously reveal them, which manifested in a post about what some people assume to be true about “typical, average straight gals,” and another one listing the assumptions the writer of that “My Brief Life as a Woman” article must hold.

First Time is a collection of illustrated erotic stories written by an author known as Sibylline. ach story is illustrated by one of ten different artists, which include Cyril Pedrosa, Olivier Vatine, Dominique Bertail, and Dave McKean. There is a wide variety of artistic styles, ranging from deco-style pop art to near-photographic realism.
To say that Stephan Elliott was taken aback when approached to direct Easy Virtue would be an understatement. Asking the man behind the beloved drag queen road movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to adapt a Noel Coward play didn’t exactly seem logical. But the producers of the film insisted there was a method to their madness.
The Sari Soldiers is a documentary that follows the lives of six Nepali women amidst the political turmoil that erupted in Nepal in 2001, after Nepal’s King and nine royal family members were massacred. The film is near perfect. It accomplishes the tenuous balance that only the best documentaries can provide: a bird’s eye view of a convoluted topic achieved through exploring the infinitely specific and intimate stories of the individuals involved.
Whether you love romance, or love to mock it—or, like the authors, both—there’s plenty to enjoy in Beyond Heaving Bosoms… There’s plenty of lovingly-written satire in the Smart Bitches Dictionary, the “Mad Libs” section, and a lengthy “interactive” romance parody in the style of the once-popular “Choose Your Own Adventure” novels.

Melanne Verveer was sworn in as Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues on Friday. I was lucky enough to be at her nomination hearing on March 24th and write about the harsh questioning she received from anti-choice Sen. Roger Wicker. Wicker used the opportunity to score political points with his conservative base, rather than focus on the important work Verveer will be doing on human tracking, poverty, illiteracy, genocide, rape as a weapon and, yes, international family planning.

I suggested that Dr. Leroy Carhart should buy the late Dr. Tiller’s clinic in order to prevent Operation Save America and other anti-abortion terrorist groups from buying the space. http://aikenareaprogressive.blogspot.com/2009/06/dr-leroy-carhart-should-buy-late-dr.html
The Augusta (GA) Chronicle had a racist and offensive cartoon in their newspaper on June 6. It was a picture that had President Obama alongside Adolf Hitler. http://aikenareaprogressive.blogspot.com/2009/06/racist-attack-on-obama-by-hacks-at.html
Domestic violence charges against Kelly Bensimon were dropped, even after she admitted to abusing her boyfriend.
http://aikenareaprogressive.blogspot.com/2009/06/charges-against-kelly-bensimon-are.html
The Kelly Bensimon situation clearly illustrates the fact that female-on-male domestic violence is NOT taken seriously at all here in the United States of America. Al Roker, for example, called domestic violence victim Nicholas Stefanov, a “wimp” for being beaten up by Ms. Bensimon.

This week I posted an update on the Oscar Grant murder trial; Judge to Mehserle: “I Don’t Believe You”. Via Twitter I also came across tweets from Rainn Wilson (Dwight on The Office) that prompted another edition of People I Love Who Have Done Shit I Hate. And amongst other posts, at the end of the week I got introspective and pondered Sexual Attractions in a Kyriarchal Society, asking the question, “is there really such a thing as innocent preferences when we’re indoctrinated with sexism and racism?”
Just one thing to self-promote this week, but it’s a biggie: The Poverty-Sink Theory of Capitalism, in which I start to put together some of my economic philosophy musings into a coherent scheme.
Angry Black Woman wants to write a script about Wolverine, with the sole purpose of insuring his love interest is still alive and well at the end. In Why Does Being Hard-Boiled Now Require Boiling a Loved One First? I ask why contemporary writers seem to think tragedy is men’s only heroic motivator. And added a counterexample from an only slightly earlier era.
Continuing what seems to have been this week’s theme of men’s expectations of men, I wrote about Chivalry vs. Courtesy, and jumped on Michael Lewis’s indoctrination-reinforcing new book about fatherhood in Stories Everyone Told Fathers.

My thoughts as a mid range escort on the depiction of high end escorts in The Girlfriend Experience movie.
My thoughts on “The Aggressives”, a documentary about butch women of color that I screened at my sex-positive film series:

A bold reboot/re-imagining of the original Star Trek presented as a “virtual internet series” created in 2005 (well before that new movie was even being considered).
It’s an ‘occupational-drama’—such as Mad Men or Breaking Bad—and less of a sci-fi piece. Very different from anything to come before that’s had Star Trek in the title. The characters are more true to life, men and women struggling with their flaws and limitations. And the preoccupation with ‘future technology’ is stressed in only the most ancillary manner.
It’s designed with viewers of HBO, Showtime, AMC and FX in mind. It’s edgier than it’s source material as well as aesthetically more ‘low-tech’ and realistic.
I’m posting this here because 1) I’m a regular reader and 2) because I think the cumulative knowledge I’ve gained as regards to feminism (what it is and what it is not) through out my life informs how I think and thus write these characters. You be the judge.
I recently traveled to Iran with a grassroots diplomacy delegation to promote peace between the US and Iran. With the violence and outrage erupting at what appears to be a stolen election, this is going to be a crucial time to make sure our government still pursues peaceful relations with Iran. Sanctions and isolation are only going to hurt the pro-democracy movement. Before and during my trip, I collected audio/video/written messages of peace from Iranians and Americans. You can see a highlight video and all the messages here: http://www.peaceactionwest.org/citizendiplomat/message/
Most of my posts have been short little links or comments, but a few are worth posting links to, I hope.
I have one more reply turned post, Tiller style. Yes, it’s another one about late term abortions, and in this one I am addressing the “I had a healthy premie baby, so late term abortion is wrong” myth. I didn’t post the whole back and forth, but if someone is looking for some incisive snark, I was cranky and on a roll if you follow the link to all the comments.
I also posted a goofy mnemonic to help me remember a particular drug, using the song “Da Butt” by E.U.
And, I am switching theme songs from “Under Pressure” (Bowie/Queen) to the Final Countdown. Five days. Wish me luck.
In Sex, Race, Class, and Easy Targets I consider why some people who have otherwise been silent about anti-vaccine foolishness have gone after Oprah for having Jenny McCarthy on her show.

A few really cool items at our site this week: The always sharp cartoonist Modern Hooker asks what kind of guy hires an escort, then goes into more numerical detail about it.
